    FINANCIAL SERVICES REPORT Fiscal Year Ended August 31, 2016 ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW YORK Dear fr iends in the Lord, Our beloved Archdiocese of New York encompasses ten coun- ties and a wide variety of people whose participation enriches our parishes, schools, apostolates of charity, and so many organiza- tions in our communities, large and small. We are blessed to be drawn together by our faith and the commitment to live it fully. In these unsett led times, I am inspired by the dedication of the men and women who off er their time, talent, and treasure to advance the kingdom of God here in our corner of New York. Th is is the eighth time that I have presented a fi nancial report to describe the far-reaching activities of our central offi ces. Please read it carefully. It refl ects the dedicated eff orts of priests, deacons, religious, and faithful to serve the almost three million Catholics in our archdiocese. Th ese include employees and volunteers of parishes, schools, catechetical programs, Saint Joseph’s Seminary, and charitable initiatives on behalf of our less fortunate broth- ers and sisters in the Lord. Of course, many of our outreach programs extend to those who do not share our faith, such as the selfl ess work of Catholic Charities, which this year is celebrating its centennial. For a century, the over ninety affi liated agencies of our Catholic Charities federation have helped children, families, vulnerable adults, immigrants, refugees, and others who need a compassionate, helping hand. CAGGIANO On June 2, I had the privilege to participate in two Eucharistic processions to commemorate the Feast of Corpus Christi. The first was held at St. John Church in Darien, following the 11:30 am Mass. The other was a procession for the deanery of Norwalk, Darien and New Canaan that originated at St. Matthew Church and extended over two miles to Norwalk Community College. This procession was attended by over 400 people. Both processions were a beauti- ful public testimony of our Catholic faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Hour Senior Staff Writer | Posted: Friday, March 14, 2014 10:01 am NORWALK -- Bishop Frank Caggiano, the new leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport, proved as appealing in his first formal meeting with the Voice of the Faithful (VOTF) on Thursday night as his boss, Pope Francis, has proven to international audiences. The short, spare native of the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, N.Y., who came to the priesthood via the unconventional path of Yale College graduate and book salesman before entering the seminary, gave 160 attending the historic meeting in the First Congregational Church on the Green the hope that their dialogue would continue. Quite a contrast to his predecessor, Bishop William E. Lori, who shunned the organization and even prohibited its use of church property for meetings or the diocesan newspaper for announcements. "We pray that we will never again be separated from our bishop or he from us," implored VOTF co- founder Joseph O'Callaghan in his introduction. Bishop Caggiano didn't make any promises except to conclude a 20-minute address and one hour of Q&A with the observation that the "dialogue" will continue. The cleric was asked a wide range of questions ranging from church positions toward birth control and abortion to prohibition to women of authoritative positions. He was asked about the formation of priests from vocation through training to ordination and of the economic disparity between parishes in one of the richest dioceses in the nation. He suggested a major thrust is being made by the church in the training of clergy, since some candidates for the priesthood today don't even know how to recite the Rosary because of the decline in Catholic culture.
