MUSIC + FESTIVAL 2019 THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA TWELFTH ANNUAL COMPOSERS FESTIVAL OCTOBER 12-13 TUCSON, ARIZONA VarèseEdgar · AaronKernis Jay · MingusCharles COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS Fred Fox School of Music Music + Festival 2019: Edgard Varèse, Aaron Jay Kernis, Charles Mingus Twelfth Annual Composers Festival The University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music October 12-13, 2019 The 2019 Music + Festival: Varese, Kernis, and Mingus will present the lives and music of these three composers within a rich and broad intellectual framework. The festival consists of a symposium providing the historical and artistic context in which these composers lived as well as what to listen for in this music; and four concerts: one chamber, one devoted to music of Charles Mingus, one featuring a mixture of electronic and concert music, and one including large ensembles. The festival features the faculty members and major student ensembles of the Fred Fox School of Music and guest artists and scholars. Despite his output of only slightly more than a dozen compositions, Edgard Varèse is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. His concept of “organized sound” led to experiments in form and texture. He was constantly on the lookout for new sound sources, and was one of the first to extensively explore percussion, electronics, and taped sounds. He was, as Henry Miller called him, “The stratospheric Colossus of Sound.” Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis draws artistic inspiration from a vast and often surprising palette of sources, among them the limitless color spectrum and immense emotional tangle of the orchestra, cantorial music in its beauty and dark intensity, the roiling drama of world events, and the energy and drive of jazz and popular music. -

Again, there is a mixture of set-price and auction items. As usual, the set-price records can be ordered, paid for and sent to you now. Alternatively, the set-price items can be reserved and paid for at a later date, either when the auction closes or put aside and collected from an upcoming record fair (see below). Again, there is no LP auction this time; instead there is a larger modern jazz set-price list. Finally, I need to point out that 2020 may well be the last year that I send out such large lists. I am aiming to at least partially retire by the end of the year. This means that I want to sell large quantities of my remaining stock. I have now managed to sell most of my excess stock of 78s. However, if you, or anyone you know, are interested in buying a quantity of LPs, please get in touch. SEE YOU AT THE RECORD FAIR: For the first time for as long as I can remember, this regular feature of our lists is a blank. This is, of course, not through any dimunition in our enthusiam for such events but as a result of the current crisis we are all living through. At present the Utrecht Fair in November is still pencilled in but I fear, in the end, this event will go the same way as the one that should have been held in April. -

During this era, especially in the 1960s, a growing disaffection with traditional religion as well as with traditional society in general led many individuals to explore spirituality, either as a replacement for or as a byproduct of religion. -

Vancouver artist Eric Metcalfe will lecture in Architecture and Design Now Date: Monday, January 8, 2007 - 11:00am - 2:00pm Location: C 610 "Eric Metcalfe's Long-standing practice in performance, video, installation, ceramics and sculpture has consistently drawn from popular culture, including film and television, jazz improvisation and the graphic novel. In his talk titled "Film Noir Architecture", Metcalfe looks in detail at film noir, a genre of great importance to film and cultural theorists over the past three decades. His talk will centre around the the installation "Laura" currently on at the Stride Gallery in Calgary. Centred around a 'missing woman', the Vera Casprey novel Laura of 1942 and the 1944 Otto Preminger film adaptation exemplify the classic motifs of crime fiction and film noir. In this installation, Metcalfe takes on the role of 'auteur', a continuation of his 'oeuvre' that includes the 1980 video Steel and Flesh. He collaborates with writer Nancy Shaw, and editor Michael Turner in the voice-over script for the sound track, in which Shaw performs; renowned jazz pianist Paul Plimley and sound artist Peter Courtemanche collaborate on the score. Ceramicist Gillian McMillan and sculptor Rick Ross work with Metcalfe in the design of the set pieces for a remarkable installation that transforms the gallery space into a sound stage that the viewer can enter. Paring down to a few significant elements the lush opulence of the film noir set, and including vintage lighting, draperies and 'painting', Metcalfe investigates the strong influence of this popular genre on both contemporary art practice and his own artistic development. -
