Present. the Book present. The book "V P Singh, Chandrashekhar, Sonia Gandhi aur Main" is one the unsaid and untold authentic historical piece of document penned by Santosh Bhartiya who is famous for his dare and credibility in the world of political journalism. The books is a must worth-read for every Indian who wants to measure the fathoms of Indian politics. This book gives a new perspective to the reader to understand the political environment of yester years. The content is written in a manner which can change the vision and stereotyped image what one generally have about V .P Singh, Chandrashekar, Sonia Gandhi but about everyone who was the part of the political system of 80s. In fact, the reader will be astounded, amazed, surprised and taken aback by the unusual and unexpected revelations of political leaders, bureaucracy and business tycoons of that era. He reveals that "Once Rajiv Gandhi got so angry that he punched hard on the table before him. V .P Singh felt it was useless to wait, he turned back after saying namaste. [page 81] Then further writes Santosh Bhartiya, “that evening of 22nd May 1987 had started writing the future of Rajiv Gandhi and the future of Vishwanath Pratap Singh”. It is written that how and when Mulayam Singh played an important role in breaking the Janata Dal government. When and how ten thousand farmers along with VP Singh had given their arrest by doing Satyagraha. [ page 283] Raj Babbar was worried that from where people would come to welcome ‘him’ the next day? Then on what condition did he take help from Bala Sahib Thackeray? [ page 94 ]. While writing all these incidents, there is mention of an incident which reveals his bonding with actress Rekha, writes that "Next day I went to Taj then within five minutes Rekha Ji came down and sat in my Fiat car UHF-1 to hit the streets of Delhi" [ page 66) The most shocking incident written in this book is where Santosh ji writes about an incidence when Rajiv Gandhi was a former Prime Minister and he came to live at 10 Janpath. One day Amitabh Bachchan came to meet Rajiv Gandhi. When he left after ten minutes, Rajiv Gandhi said, "He is a snake". When Rajiv Gandhi said this, there was a journalist present who was seen more around Rajiv Gandhi in those days. [ page 57] In this book, the balanced personality of the politicians and the game of equations of their policies and diplomacy has been written very effectively. As it is written on one page that "Chandrashekhar never considered VP Singh as a leader but used him as a strategy to win elections". [ page 255 ] In one place it is written that "snakes were being released in ‘his’ meetings, an attempt was made to push ‘him’ at the railway station". [ page 135] A chapter titled "Bofors" mentions "actually Ottavio Kvatrocchi, an Italian frequent visitor to the Prime Minister's house, was the director of all this drama, Rajiv Gandhi never came to know that when and how his house and office were used in the Bofors deal." [ page 69]. In this book, for the first time that exact incident, the country will be able to know how Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister after all. [ page 470 ] Santosh Bhartiya reveals the sensational conversation between Chandrashakhar and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, it is written that where Chandrashakhar said Atal ji that "You also leave the BJP, I also know you leave the party and ask Sharad Pawar as well to leave the Congress, and let all three of us travel around the country and prepare public for a new political change. On this Atal ji had said that "Chandrasekhar you are absolutely right but you do not know RSS, they won’t leave me alive, if I joined you by separating from RSS". [ page 435 ] Another astonishing incident is written that why and how Sonia Gandhi had distanced herself from Amitabh Bachchan, it is written that after the death of Rajiv Gandhi, "One day Sonia Gandhi told Amitabh Bachchan that she was very worried about Rahul's fees as she doesn’t have any money left. And can he just arrange the fees? To this Amitabh Bachchan replied, "Lalit Suri and Satish Sharma messed up the money, nothing is there, but I will do something." Two days later, he sent a cheque for one thousand dollars to Sonia Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi returned that cheque to Amitabh. Sonia Gandhi could never forget this incident and considering it as an insult, she trashed Amitabh Bachchan from her life forever. [ page 59] Making some revelations about the business world, Santosh Bhartiya writes that “An incident made Dhirubhai the biggest enemy of VP Singh.” What was that incident is written in a very interesting style in the book. [ page 53 ] Santosh Bhartiya writes that the memories associated with every character in this book are not mere memories, but they are documents of the political period of India which has been the most stirring. He writes that VP Singh, Chandrashekhar and Sonia Gandhi, these three personalities were deprived of the respect which they should have received. Santosh Bhartiya writes that Sonia Gandhi should be praised that even the greed of becoming the Prime Minister could not tempt her. Her wisdom made the UPA run for ten years. If she wanted, instead of Narasimha Rao, she herself could have become the Prime Minister. [ page 471] It is one the most beautifully, non-politically written political history. The books falls under Modern Political history or Contemporary Indian Political History. Indira Gandhi, Moraji Desai, Satyapal Malik, Pranab Mukherjee, Mahant Avaidyanath, Swami Chinmayanand, Kamal Morarka, Dr. Manzoor Alam, Sopal Shastri, Devi Lal, Advani, Shatrughan Sinha, Arif Mohammad Khan, NT Rama Rao, Ram Vilas Paswan, Sunil Shastri , Maneka Gandhi, Kanshi Ram, Saratchandra Sinha, Ramkrishna Hegde, The political journey of leaders and actors with huge personalities like Arun Nehru, Ahmed Patel, Sanjay Singh, Ajit Singh, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, Ashok Singhal, Farooq Abdullah, Nawaz Sharif, Dr. Manmohan Singh and Jayaprakash Narayan is recorded. The editor has written so well that after reading this book, it is as if you have come through a time. .

Its content may have been hollowed out but it remains important for the people of Kashmir. Calls to scrap it are based on a misinterpretation. The Article 370 debate is back centre-stage. The new Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, has made a detailed statement on Article 370 after his return from Kashmir. In tune with his party’s ideological position, he has yet again termed this constitutional provision as “temporary”. At the same time he has been candid enough to confess for the first time that most elections in Kashmir had been rigged. The importance of Article 370 to Kashmir and the significance it holds in our Constitution are issues that need to be constantly reiterated to dispel the considerable misinterpretation and misunderstanding about this provision in the Constitution of India History of Article 370 The most important feature of federalism in the United States of America (USA) was the ”compact” between the Page 1 www.TheIndiaForum.in July 5, 2019 erstwhile 13 British colonies that constituted themselves first into a confederation and then into a federal polity under the 1791 constitution of the USA. • India: the Weakening of the Congress Stranglehold and the Productivity Shift in India
ASARC Working Paper 2009/06 India: The Weakening of the Congress Stranglehold and the Productivity Shift in India Desh Gupta, University of Canberra Abstract This paper explains the complex of factors in the weakening of the Congress Party from the height of its power at the centre in 1984. They are connected with the rise of state and regional-based parties, the greater acceptability of BJP as an alternative in some of the states and at the Centre, and as a partner to some of the state-based parties, which are in competition with Congress. In addition, it demonstrates that even as the dominance of Congress has diminished, there have been substantial improvements in the economic performance and primary education enrolment. It is argued that V.P. Singh played an important role both in the diminishing of the Congress Party and in India’s improved economic performance. Competition between BJP and Congress has led to increased focus on improved governance. Congress improved its position in the 2009 Parliamentary elections and the reasons for this are briefly covered. But this does not guarantee an improved performance in the future. Whatever the outcomes of the future elections, India’s reforms are likely to continue and India’s economic future remains bright. Increased political contestability has increased focus on governance by Congress, BJP and even state-based and regional parties. This should ensure improved economic and outcomes and implementation of policies. • A Number of Decisions Made by the Rajiv Gandhi Government
Back to the Future: The Congress Party’s Upset Victory in India’s 14th General Elections Introduction The outcome of India’s 14th General Elections, held in four phases between April 20 and May 10, 2004, was a big surprise to most election-watchers. The incumbent center-right National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had been expected to win comfortably--with some even speculating that the BJP could win a majority of the seats in parliament on its own. Instead, the NDA was soundly defeated by a center-left alliance led by the Indian National Congress or Congress Party. The Congress Party, which dominated Indian politics until the 1990s, had been written off by most observers but edged out the BJP to become the largest party in parliament for the first time since 1996.1 The result was not a complete surprise as opinion polls did show the tide turning against the NDA. While early polls forecast a landslide victory for the NDA, later ones suggested a narrow victory, and by the end, most exit polls predicted a “hung” parliament with both sides jockeying for support. As it turned out, the Congress-led alliance, which did not have a formal name, won 217 seats to the NDA’s 185, with the Congress itself winning 145 seats to the BJP’s 138. Although neither alliance won a majority in the 543-seat lower house of parliament (Lok Sabha) the Congress-led alliance was preferred by most of the remaining parties, especially the four-party communist-led Left Front, which won enough seats to guarantee a Congress government.2 Table 1: Summary of Results of 2004 General Elections in India.

  • Modi, Social Media, and Competitive Electoral Populism in India
International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 4158–4180 1932–8036/20170005 Fragile Hegemony: Modi, Social Media, and Competitive Electoral Populism in India SUBIR SINHA1 School of Oriental and African Studies, London, UK Direct and unmediated communication between the leader and the people defines and constitutes populism. I examine how social media, and communicative practices typical to it, function as sites and modes for constituting competing models of the leader, the people, and their relationship in contemporary Indian politics. Social media was mobilized for creating a parliamentary majority for Narendra Modi, who dominated this terrain and whose campaign mastered the use of different platforms to access and enroll diverse social groups into a winning coalition behind his claims to a “developmental sovereignty” ratified by “the people.” Following his victory, other parties and political formations have established substantial presence on these platforms. I examine emerging strategies of using social media to criticize and satirize Modi and offering alternative leader-people relations, thus democratizing social media. Practices of critique and its dissemination suggest the outlines of possible “counterpeople” available for enrollment in populism’s future forms. I conclude with remarks about the connection between activated citizens on social media and the fragility of hegemony in the domain of politics more generally. Keywords: Modi, populism, Twitter, WhatsApp, social media On January 24, 2017, India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), proudly tweeted that Narendra Modi, its iconic prime minister of India, had become “the world’s most followed leader on social media” (see Figure 1). Modi’s management of—and dominance over—media and social media was a key factor contributing to his convincing win in the 2014 general election, when he led his party to a parliamentary majority, winning 31% of the votes cast.

  • “No Job Is Small Or Big, It Is the Way in Which You Do Makes It Small Or Big”
“NO JOB IS SMALL OR BIG, IT IS THE WAY IN WHICH YOU DO MAKES IT SMALL OR BIG” B.S.K. Naidu I was born in a middle-class family. I was schooled in small towns of old Madhya Pradesh. Initially I was admitted to Vidya Mandir, Akola where I was tested and found suitable for 2nd standard and subsequently I secured first position in the class, which proved their judgment right. Thanks to my mother who taught me the basics very early with her meager qualification of just primary education, where of course she was a topper. My father, in the State Government service, was transferred to Mandla. I have fond memories of my childhood spent there. Once I was given an opportunity to deliver a lecture on Goswami Tulsidas representing the Primary school which fetched me a medal. I clearly remember the process of overcoming the stage fear in that big Town Hall packed with elders where I was feeling too small. I little realized then that it would be at the bottom of a long series of invited lectures and standing ovations at international forums in 5-continents including my lead speeches at United Nations, Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the World Bank etc. and a series of 24 awards. Though I was schooled in district schools of insignificant towns of Madhya Pradesh, my parents somehow dreamt of making me an engineer. I did my engineering from the State’s oldest Government Engineering College at Jabalpur. I remember my Russian professor Mr. Tirechev very kindly. His popular catch phrase was “Full work, full marks, No work, no marks”.
