Varma and McGinn received a joint two-year grant totaling $229,000. McGinn and Leighton both received individual two-year research grants totaling $100,000. Varma and McGinn are cooperating on a project entitled “Gasless Combustion Synthesis from Elements Under Microgravity: A Study of Structure-Formation Processes.” The two plan on studying the effects of micro gravity on reactions between solids to produce new materials. Varma explained that in combustion synthesis, one of the materials melts and spreads around the other reactant. This spreading is effected by gravity, and therefore microgravity experiments will better determine the outcome of such reac tions.', Varma will be the principal investigator of the grant, the person who directs the research, Rakow appears on “Larry King” because of his previous long term research in the field.
