    San .Jose, California August 21-22, 2004 $5.00 Welcome to Classic Gaming Expo 2004!!! When this show first opened in 1998 no one really knew what to expect. The concept of "retro" gaming was still relatively new and was far from mainstream. It was a brave new world , where gaming fans worked to bring everyone together for a fun-filled weekend reminding us of how we got so excited about videogames in the first place. This year's event feels like that first time. For the last six years Classic Gaming Expo has taken residence in the glamorous confines of sin city, Las Vegas. It was a great run but recently we began to notice that Las Vegas is, in fact, an island . We could promote the show 24/7 for months but the one thing we could not change is that there are very few native gamers in the area. Everyone attending Classic Gaming Expo was in Las Vegas specifically to attend this show - so unless you were prepared to take a vacation on that weekend , you were going to miss it year in and year out. The move to San Jose not only brings the excitement of a fun-filled gaming weekend to a brave new world, but this brave new world also happens to be the home of videogaming itself. The roots of everything you know and love about this industry sprang not far from this very building. We think it's time to sow some new seeds and build a new home. A place where we can all experience the games, the people, and the excitement that filled our youth, all over again .

Editor’s BLURB by Dave Giarrusso DIGITAL e had a lot of big plans for our 50th issue (“DP# 50: Wfi fty!” just in case your short term memory functions a bit like mine does as of late) and fortunately, most of ‘em made it in. UNfortunately, due to time and space constraints, and a mischievious orange tabby by the name of “Pickles”, a scant few of ‘em got left on the cutting room fl oor. The one portion of the 50th issue that we (okay, actually John) were working really hard on was the “alumni moments” section - a section devoted to all the PRESS game designers and artists who shaped what we’ve come to call our favorite pasttime. As you can probably imagine, it was a big undertaking - too big to make it into the pages of issue #50. DIGITAL PRESS # 52 MAY / JUNE 2003 BUT - guess what? John kept nagging everyone in his most convincing voice Founders Joe Santulli and eventually, with nothing but the most polite coercion, managed to round Kevin Oleniacz up the troops. In fact, everyone had such a blast working with John that we wound up with tons more material than we had originally anticipated having.     CHAPTER Abstraction in the Video Game MARK J. P. WOLF Most writing on video games considers either narrative concerns or game- play and what is usually referred to as "interactivity." Instead of focusing on the "game" aspects of the video game, this essay looks at the video game as "video," or rather, as a medium of visual imagery. The video game began with perhaps the harshest restrictions encountered by any nascent visual medium in regard to graphic representation. So limited were the graphics capabil- ities of the early games, that the medium was forced to remain relatively abstract for over a decade. Gradually as technology improved, designers strove for move representational graphics in game imagery, and today they still continue to pursue ever more detailed representations approximating the physical world. At the same time, video games have come to rely on conventions from film and television, allowing the depiction and naviga- tion of their diegetic worlds to seem more intuitive and familiar to players. Yet by limiting themselves to conventions established in other media, game designers have neglected the realm of possibilities which abstraction has to offer. This great, untapped potential will only be mined by a deliberate move back into abstract design that takes into consideration the unique properties of the video game medium. In order to get a better sense of how abstraction has been used in video games, we might first examine some of the ways in which the video game can be seen as an extension of abstract art, and the different types of abstraction that can be present within a video game.

    Interview: Thomas Jentzsch A lot has already been said about the greatest programmers in the Atari 2600 history: David Crane, Carol Shaw, Gary Kitchen, Steve Cartwright, Rob Fulop, some among many geniuses that are always praised in shows and interviewed. However, there´s a generation that came right after the “golden era” of the Atari 2600, programmers that are still carrying the torch creating homebrews. Men and woman with a genuine passion for the Atari, an encyclopedical knowledge of the system, a huge talent and, the most amazing, that donate their time to the Atari community for love, not as a career. Of those modern masters of Atari, one of the most active and gifted is the german Thomas Jentzsch. At 55, Thomas is a software engineer who dedicated the last 20 years of his life to our beloved console, by launching new games, converting PAL exclusives to NTSC, helping recover and release long-lost games, or adding trackball support for some classics. He is so active in the scene that between he giving me this interview and I findind the time to write this piece he found the time to help recovering and releasing another prototype considered long lost: “Kickman”. A game wich recovery itself would demand and article of its own but that Thomas, with the sheer humbleness that characterizes him, sums up like this: “We found the source code on a disc but when compiled it would not run. I´ve massaged the source code, removed two bytes from the explosion when the balloon hits the floor and added missing 4 bytes for the startup vectors.
