Чвырь АРХЕОЛОГО-ЭТНОГРАФИЧЕСКИЕ ИССЛЕДОВАНИЯ Б.А. ЛИТВИНСКОГО I. Этнографические сюжеты в творчестве Б.А. Литвинского Научное наследие Б.А. Литвинского внушительно не только по объему, но и чрезвычайно многогранно, связано с решением множества проблем в истории культуры Центральной Азии. Одна- ко основой его научной идентификации, конечно, была профессия археолога, причем, археолога удачливого, открывшего и исследо- вавшего несколько крупнейших памятников Средней Азии (в юж- ном Таджикистане, на Памире и в Фергане). Б.А. никогда не огра- ничивался обычными публикациями обнаруженных материалов с первичной археологической интерпретацией, за ними всегда сле- довали дальнейшие поиски аналогий и их историко-культурный комментарий, извлечение новых, более глубоких смыслов из каж- дой найденной вещи, из всего археологического объекта в целом или из характеристики окружающей памятник этнокультурной среды. Подобные задачи, естественно, требовали привлечения данных смежных наук – востоковедения, антропологии, лингви- стики, фольклористики. В этом ряду этнографические мотивы то- же не были случайными и занимали важное место во многих его статьях и монографиях. Археолого-этнографическое изучение культуры Средней Азии – мощное направление в отечественной науке ХХ в., у исто- ков которого стоял С.П. Толстов. Долгое время оно было обще- принятым и неоспоримым приемом исторического анализа. Тем удивительнее, что сам этот подход с методической стороны так и остаётся слабо разработанным, нет четких правил и ограничений, фактически каждый автор в меру своей компетенции и сообразно цели просто ищет своим археологическим материалам либо прям подтверждения в этнографических реалиях, либо просто похожие (по его мнению) артефакты, причем, по всему миру, поскольку в глазах читателей подобранное внешнее сходство археологических и этнографических аналогов является наиболее убедительным ар- 7 гументом в пользу авторских выводов. Но к концу ХХ века среди археологов постепенно стали возникать сомнения в убедительно- сти и даже правомочности подобных сравнений. Возможно, при- чиной этому послужили наблюдения над массовым использовани- ем археолого-этнографических сопоставлений, со временем пре- вратившихся в полуавтоматическую и обязательную процедуру с заранее известными или подразумеваемыми, часто уже вторичны- ми выводами. Эта тема, несомненно, требует специального обсуж- дения, но в статье лишь предложено присмотреться, как Б.А. Лит- винский сопоставлял археологические и этнографические матери- алы, как он использовал междисциплинарный подход, сделав его опорным приемом своих изысканий. Б.А. Литвинский был, безусловно, человеком своего времени, разделяя с ним коллективные идеалы и заблуждения, предубежде- ния и стереотипы. Но некоторые своеобразные черты работы с эт- нографическим материалом всё же заметно отличают его от боль- шинства коллег. Работая с Б.А. в одном секторе ИВ РАН с 1972 г., я могла непосредственно наблюдать его особое отношение к этно- графии: он знал абсолютно всю дореволюционную и современную литературу по этнографии оседлых обитателей Средней Азии (вплоть до крошечных этнографических заметок в туркестанской местной прессе XIX в.). Но главным источником его знаний были личные знакомства со многими ведущими этнографами Москвы, Петербурга, Душанбе, Ташкента – О.А. Сухаревой, А.К. Писарчик, Н.Н. Ершовым и Б.Х. Кармышевой, а также с Н.А. Кисляковым, В.Г. Мошковой, Л.Ф. Моногаровой, М. Рахимовым, А.З. Розен- фельд и др.; его постоянным дружелюбным вниманием пользова- лись и более молодые коллеги (Н. Акрамов, Н. Бабаева, А. Мардо- нова, О. Муродов, И. Мухиддинов, И.М. Стеблин-Каменский и др.). Со своими ровесниками и старшими товарищами Б.А. не про- сто дружил, он восхищался их высоким профессионализмом и ко- нечно был в курсе новейших полевых этнографических изыска- ний, которые в 50-70-е годы были исключительно интенсивны и плодотворны. Постоянно вращаясь среди этнографов, консульти- руясь и «проговаривая» с ними особо интересующие его мельчай- шие детали традиционного быта и обрядности, Б.А. старался в каждом конкретном случае вникнуть в уникальный историко- 8 культурный контекст бытования того или иного этнографического факта (изделия, традиционного действия, этикетного обыкновения или суеверия). Подобными сведениями он владел наравне с сами- ми этнографами, что встречается чрезвычайно редко. Обычно археологи обращаются к этнографическим материа- лам, испытывая потребность в дополнительной интерпретации своих безмолвных объектов, особенно связанных с религиозными верованиями и представлениями. Но для этого необходимо свиде- тельство этнокультурной связи между древними племенами и народами и современным, «традиционно-этнографическим» насе- лением того же региона в XIX–XX вв. Сейчас это уже трюизм, установленный факт, а в 50-70-е годы в среднеазиатской археоло- гии эта задача ещё была актуальна и требовала тщательной аргу- ментации. Именно поэтому все усилия Литвинского поначалу направлены именно на двуединую задачу – толкования конкрет- ных археологических памятников и доказательства генетической этнокультурной преемственности населения Туркестана с древно- сти до наших дней (Литвинский 1972; 1972а; 1981а; 1984).

Ceci est essentiellement dû à la rareté des représentations fgurées. Cependant, des fouilles récentes ont permis de découvrir quelques fagments de sculptures en stuc et en argile, en même temps que des moules doubles en mortier de gypse qui éclairent d’un nouveau jour les techniques de fabrication des sculptures. Le procédé de fabrication d’une sculpture est identique pour les deux types de matériaux puisque le modelage de la fgure se fait grâce à l’application successive de couches d’argile et de stuc (ou les deux), de plus en plus fnes et pures.

Numismatic studies have reconstructed the history of the following centuries. However, our understanding of the (mutual?) acculturation following the campaign remains limited. The aim of the conference was to discuss what actually happened in Central Asia at that time. It takes as much as possible a local point of view and ask how local people experienced these turbulent developments, and how they coped with the strange newcomers.

The first was Kushanshahr, named after the Great Kushan emperors, who held sway from the Amu Darya (Oxus) valley to the Indus and at times as far as the Ganges. Here flourished the traditions of the Kushans, who had brought together the political, economic, social and religious currents of the time from the countries with which they had dealings (see Chapter 7). The second great empire (which rose to challenge Kushan power) was Eranshahr, which expanded both westward and eastward under the new Sasanian dynasty. Its eastern advance shook Kushan power to its foundation. Warikoo Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi 110067, INDIA The Karakoram-Himalayan region is the cradle from where ancient Indian culture in- cluding Buddhism spread to different directions in Central Asia, East Asia and South East Asia. Gilgit, Chilas, Chitral, Baltistan, Ladakh, Zanskar and other frontier areas have been important mileposts on the famous Silk Route. Buddhist savants from India contributed to the spread of Buddhism in Central Asia and East Asia. One of the eminent scholars was Kumarajiva (344–413 AD) who broke political, geographical, cultural and linguistic barriers for propaga- tion of Buddhism. Hieun Tsiang mentions four important centres of Buddhism in Central Asia – Shan-shan (Kroraina), Khotan, Kucha and Turfan. Kashmir played an important role in intro- ducing Buddhism to Khotan, which in turn played a key role in the transmission of Buddhism to China. Several important places on the Silk Route system such as Kucha, Balkh, Bamiyan, Khotan, Kashgar etc. developed into important centres of Buddhism when parts of Central Asia and north-western India were integrated into a single kingdom under the Kushans.) Evanthia Tsantini, Verònica Martínez and Josep M Gurt Archaeometrical estudy of ceramic material from kiln 2 Introduction In Uzbekistan a number of archaeometrical studies were done during the 1980’s and early 90’s using chemical and mineralogical analysis, notably by S. V. Vivdenko and A. Abdurazakov. The first analysed shards from a number of sites mostly dated to the Iron Age but also from the Kushan period at Jalangtush Tepe [Vivdenko 1987, 1987a, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996]. Abdurazakov also analysed a few sherds, mainly dated to the Bronze Age but including some from the Kushan period at sites such as Mirzakul’ Tepe and Talashkan Tepe [Abdurazakov, Bezborodov et alii. 1963, Abdurazakov 1988, Abdurazakov 1996, Abdurazakov, Dzhalalova 1986, Abdurazakov 1987]. None of this work had the necessary continuation neither was based on the definition of Reference Groups (RG) of Paste Compositional Reference Units (PCRU) which is a fundamental process in the mark of provenience studies in order to attempt to locate the origin or the production site where the pottery was made [Picon, 1984; Buxeda et al.,1995]. The present work is centred to the study of production and possible local distribution of ceramics dated in the Kushan period sampled at one of the ceramic kilns of Kara Tepe (Table 1) (Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). It aims, also, to study the technological aspects of fabrication of these ceramics. In order to cover these subjects an archaeometric study of a total of 50 samples (Table 1) has been carried out by applying chemical and mineralogical techniques.
