  • Metropolitan Museum Publishes List of European Paintings with Incomplete Nazi-Era Provenance
ARCHIVES The Metropolitan Museum of Art PLEASE POST For Release: Contact: IMMEDIATE Harold Holzer METROPOLITAN MUSEUM PUBLISHES LIST OF EUROPEAN PAINTINGS WITH INCOMPLETE NAZI-ERA PROVENANCE (New York, April 12, 2000) - The Metropolitan Museum of Art today issued a list of European paintings in its collections with incomplete provenance for the Nazi/World War II era. The list was made public today by Philippe de Montebeilo, Director of the Metropolitan, who testified this morning, along with other museum directors, before the Presidential Advisory Commission on Holocaust Assets in the United States. Inclusion on this list indicates that more information is required to complete the Metropolitan Museum's knowledge of the ownership of these works during the Nazi/World War II era, and does not indicate that the works are suspected of having been looted and not restituted. The list of the 393 works of art — titles, artists, and accession numbers — was posted today on the Metropolitan Museum Web site [www.metmuseum.org] under a "News from the Met" banner. "This is not a list of suspect pictures," Mr. de Montebeilo explained in his testimony. "Our list is an invitation for information that might help fill the elusive gaps during the Nazi era." Mr. de Montebeilo served in 1998 as chairman of the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) Task Force on the spoliation of art during the Nazi era. The Task Force guidelines and principles, which were adopted in June 1998 by the full AAMD, committed all American museums to comprehensive reviews of their collections to ascertain if any works were unlawfully confiscated during the Nazi/World War II era and never returned." • March 30, 2021 for IMMEDIATE RELEASE Getty Museum Acquires
DATE: March 30, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Getty Museum Acquires Recently Rediscovered Painting by Artemisia Gentileschi Lucretia, About 1627, Artemisia Gentileschi (Italian, 1593- c.1654) Los Angeles – The J. Paul Getty Museum today announced the acquisition of a major work by Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-c.1654), the most celebrated woman painter of 17th-century Italy. Recently rediscovered after having been in private collections for centuries, the painting represents the artist at the height of her expressive powers, and demonstrates her ambition for depicting historical subjects, something that was virtually unprecedented for a female artist in her day. The subject, which Gentileschi painted several times over the course of her career, no doubt had very personal significance for her: like Lucretia, the Roman heroine who took her own life after having been raped, Artemisia had experienced sexual violence as a young woman. In this painting Lucretia emerges from the shadows, eyes cast heavenward, head tilted back, breasts bare, at the moment before she plunges a dagger into her chest. “Although renowned in her day as a painter of outstanding ability, Artemisia suffered from the long shadow cast by her more famous and celebrated father Orazio Gentileschi (of whom the Getty has two major works, Lot and His Daughters and the recently acquired Danaë and the Shower of Gold),” said Timothy Potts, Maria Hummer-Tuttle and Robert Tuttle Director of the J. Paul Getty Museum. “A thorough reassessment of her place in baroque art had to wait until the late 20th century, since when she has become one of the most sought-after painters of the 17th century.

  • 1 Caravaggio and a Neuroarthistory Of
CARAVAGGIO AND A NEUROARTHISTORY OF ENGAGEMENT Kajsa Berg A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia September 2009 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on the condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author’s prior written consent. 1 Abstract ABSTRACT John Onians, David Freedberg and Norman Bryson have all suggested that neuroscience may be particularly useful in examining emotional responses to art. This thesis presents a neuroarthistorical approach to viewer engagement in order to examine Caravaggio’s paintings and the responses of early-seventeenth-century viewers in Rome. Data concerning mirror neurons suggests that people engaged empathetically with Caravaggio’s paintings because of his innovative use of movement. While spiritual exercises have been connected to Caravaggio’s interpretation of subject matter, knowledge about neural plasticity (how the brain changes as a result of experience and training), indicates that people who continually practiced these exercises would be more susceptible to emotionally engaging imagery. The thesis develops Baxandall’s concept of the ‘period eye’ in order to demonstrate that neuroscience is useful in context specific art-historical queries. Applying data concerning the ‘contextual brain’ facilitates the examination of both the cognitive skills and the emotional factors involved in viewer engagement. The skilful rendering of gestures and expressions was a part of the artist’s repertoire and Artemisia Gentileschi’s adaptation of the violent action emphasised in Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes testifies to her engagement with his painting.

Old Master Paintings Market Report Summer 2019 Presented by ArtTactic in collaboration with London Art Week Table of Contents Introduction Introduction 3 New Looks: Christie’s 4 Stories Reframed: Sotheby’s 5 “The market is a beast and it has to be fed…“ Insight: Old Masters Day Sales 6 - Allison Wucher, Director of Master Drawings New York Focus: The Art World’s Dreams Come True 8 From the inside out, the Old Masters market is sizzling with change. Christie’s is riding this wave, branding their Classic Week sales as “Out with the New,” and Sotheby’s has also taken the opportunity to sport a new look, fiery and female focused. Recent art discoveries Coming Up: July 2019 and Beyond 11 have pumped life (and maybe even some gossip) into the market, from the controversial blockbuster sale of Salvator Mundi last year to the eagerly awaited sale of the Toulouse Looking Back: New York Sales, January and May 2019 16 Caravaggio. Many hope that these hidden gems are harbingers for more discoveries to come, and the market is ready for whatever French attics and colonial homes have to offer. Special Report: Pitching Provenance 20 As Allison Wucher, Director of Master Drawings New York, aptly said, “the market is a beast and it has to be fed…” About ArtTactic: Memberships 22 Indeed, it is clear that the market has an appetite: Evening sales were up over 10% in 2018 from 2017, and Day sales up 9.8%.
