The Boston Red Sox Friday, November 20, 2020 * The Boston Globe With myocarditis behind him, Red Sox lefty Eduardo Rodriguez confidently looks ahead Alex Speier Playing catch is among the least exceptional things a major league baseball player can do. It is a signal of routine, little more than an obligatory checkmark in a day. That is not the case for Eduardo Rodriguez. Last week, for the first time since his season ended because of COVID-19-related myocarditis in mid-July, the Red Sox lefthander started throwing a baseball. It represented a milestone, and he’s now going to be doing it four times a week. “Amazing, man. It feels great,” Rodriguez said by phone. “It’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.” For the 28-year-old lefthander, normal has taken on new dimensions. At the start of July, just before he was scheduled to come to Boston for summer training camp before the compressed season, Rodriguez tested positive for COVID-19. He remained home until multiple negative tests led to clearance to come to Boston. But when he started throwing in Fenway Park, fatigue immediately made it clear that something was very wrong. A battery of tests revealed the myocarditis — an inflammation of the heart muscle that in worst-case scenarios can cause death. When the condition did not immediately resolve, Rodriguez was shut down for the season and sent back home. There, he wasn’t merely prohibited from engaging in baseball activities, he was restricted from virtually all forms of physical exertion — whether it was playing with his 7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son, or taking his dog for a walk.

The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, December 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe MLB Draft League launching wooden-bat league for top draft prospects Matthew Doherty Major League Baseball is launching a wooden-bat league for top prospects who are eligible for the MLB Draft, it announced Monday. The MLB Draft League, which will be operated by the scouting service Prep Baseball Report, has five member teams and is discussing adding a sixth team in the coming weeks. Teams will play a 68-game regular season from late May to mid-August, split into two parts. The first half of the season will showcase the draft-eligible high school, college, and junior college players. After an All-Star break centered around the MLB Draft (July 11-13), teams will restock their rosters with the top undrafted players for the second half of the season. Paul Toboni, the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Red Sox, said he’s unsure whether top prospects will choose to play in the MLB Draft League. The pandemic’s effect on the spring season will also play a factor, according to Toboni. “I think it’s too early to tell,” said Toboni. “It’s tough to predict the caliber of prospect that will choose to play in this league. And I’m stating the obvious here, but how the pandemic affects spring seasons will ultimately have an impact on prospects’ willingness to play as well.” The college baseball regular season ends in mid-May and the College World Series is scheduled from June 19 - June 30 this season.

  • AUGUST 31St PAWTUCKET (65-70) at SCRANTON/WB (70-64) 7:05 Pm
AUGUST 31st PAWTUCKET (65-70) at SCRANTON/WB (70-64) 7:05 pm Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Chandler Shepherd (7-9, 3.93) vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders RHP Erik Swanson (2-2, 4.09) August Finale to Start Final Four – The Pawtucket Red Sox will try to play the role of spoiler and put the finishing touches on a fine month of August (17-12) when they meet the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (AAA-Yankees) for the final four games of the regular-season beginning tonight. The home and home series features a pair of games at PNC Field in Moosic, PA (tonight at 7:05 pm and tomorrow at 6:35 pm) and then two games at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket on Sunday at 6:15 pm(with post-game fireworks) and Labor Day Monday at 1:35 pm. That will be it for the PawSox who were eliminated from post-season consideration on Wednesday evening while Scranton/WB still has their sights set on yet another post-season berth. The RailRiders are currently less than a pct. point ahead Indianapolis (although in a virtual tie) for the IL Wild Card race with four games remaining for each team (SWB at .52238 while IND at .52205). Because Scranton/WB had two games cancelled due to weather (one in June and on in July) they will only play 138 games while Indy will play 140…hence those two teams can not end the season in a tie. House of Horrors - PNC Field has been more like PAIN Field for the PawSox in recent times as the Sox have lost 15 of their last 18 games in Moosic.
