  • A's Place RHP Burch Smith on 10-Day Injured List; Recall RHP
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 16, 2020 A’s Place RHP Burch Smith on 10-day Injured List; Recall RHP James Kaprielian from Alternate Site OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s placed right-handed pitcher Burch Smith on the 10-day injured list with a strained right forearm and recalled right-handed pitcher James Kaprielian from their alternate site, the club announced today. Smith began the season with an 11.1-inning scoreless streak before exiting the game last night after allowing three runs in the seventh inning. He has a 2.25 ERA and .163 opponents batting average in six games with the A’s and has two wins and a save. Kaprielian joins the A’s for the second time this year as he was previously called up on Aug. 4 when Jordan Weems went on the IL. He did not pitch before he was optioned back to the alternate site on Aug. 6 when rosters were reduced from 30 to 28. The 26-year-old right-hander was acquired from the New York Yankees in the Sonny Gray trade on July 31, 2017 and will be making his Major League debut. He was the Yankees first round draft pick in 2015 but pitched in just eight games over his first four years as a professional. Kaprielian missed most of 2016 with an elbow injury and then missed the entire 2017 and 2018 seasons following April 18, 2017 “Tommy John” surgery. He combined for a 4- 3 record and a 3.18 ERA in 19 games, including 16 starts, with Single-A Stockton, Double-A Midland and Triple-A Las Vegas last year.
