SPORT FISH OF OHIO identification DIVISION OF WILDLIFE 1 With more than 40,000 miles of streams, 2.4 million acres of Lake Erie and inland water, and 450 miles of the Ohio River, Ohio supports a diverse and abundant fish fauna represented by more than 160 species. Ohio’s fishes come in a wide range of sizes, shapes and colors...and live in a variety of aquatic habitats from our largest lakes and rivers to the smallest ponds and creeks. Approximately one-third of these species can be found in this guide. This fish identification guide provides color illustrations to help anglers identify their catch, and useful tips to help catch more fish. We hope it will also increase your awareness of the diversity of fishes in Ohio. This book also gives information about the life history of 27 of Ohio’s commonly caught species, as well as information on selected threatened and endangered species. Color illustrations and names are also offered for 20 additional species, many of which are rarely caught by anglers, but are quite common throughout Ohio. Fishing is a favorite pastime of many Ohioans and one of the most enduring family traditions. A first fish or day shared on the water are memories that last a lifetime. It is our sincere hope that the information in this guide will contribute significantly to your fishing experiences and understanding of Ohio’s fishes. Good Fishing! Fish Species of Saskatchewan
Introduction From the shallow, nutrient -rich potholes of the prairies to the clear, cool rock -lined waters of our province’s north, Saskatchewan can boast over 50,000 fish-bearing bodies of water. Indeed, water accounts for about one-eighth, or 80,000 square kilometers, of this province’s total surface area. As numerous and varied as these waterbodies are, so too are the types of fish that inhabit them. In total, Saskatchewan is home to 67 different fish species from 16 separate taxonomic families. Of these 67, 58 are native to Saskatchewan while the remaining nine represent species that have either been introduced to our waters or have naturally extended their range into the province. Approximately one-third of the fish species found within Saskatchewan can be classed as sportfish. These are the fish commonly sought out by anglers and are the best known. The remaining two-thirds can be grouped as minnow or rough-fish species. The focus of this booklet is primarily on the sportfish of Saskatchewan, but it also includes information about several rough-fish species as well. Descriptions provide information regarding the appearance of particular fish as well as habitat preferences and spawning and feeding behaviours. The individual species range maps are subject to change due to natural range extensions and recessions or because of changes in fisheries management. If you’ve been looking for a place to catch some dinner, our fisheries biologists have compiled a list of the 15 best panfishing lakes throughout Indiana. Enjoy! Northern Indiana Sylvan Lake Sylvan Lake is a 669-acre man made reservoir near Rome City. It is best known for its bluegill fishing with some reaching 9 inches. About one third of the adult bluegill population are 7 inches or larger. The best places to catch bluegill are the Cain Basin at the east end of the lake and along the 8 to 10 foot drop-offs in the western basin. Red-worms, flies, and crickets are the most effective baits. Skinner Lake Skinner Lake is a 125-acre natural lake near Albion. The lake is known for crappie fishing for both black and white crappies. Most crappies are in the 8 to 9 inch range, with some reaching 16 inches long. Don’t expect to catch lots of big crappies, but you can expect to catch plenty that are keeper-size. The best crappie fishing is in May over developing lily pads in the four corners of the lake. Live minnows and small white jigs are the most effective baits. J. C. Murphey Lake J. C. Murphey Lake is located on Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area in Newton County. Following this winter, there was minimal ice fishing (due to lack of ice) and the spring fishing should be phenomenal especially for bluegills. -

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF Commercial Fishing IN SOUTH DAKOTA By todd St. Sauver, GFP Fisheries program specialist If you have ever watched reality shows like Deadliest Catch, Swamp Pawn, Bottom Feeders or Alaska: Battle on the Bay, you are familiar with a few of the many types of commercial fishing practiced around the world. But did you know we have commercial fishing in South Dakota? What is commercial fishing? Put simply, it is catching fish or other aquatic animals to sell for profit. Commercial fishing operations can be small, with one person running a few hoop nets for catfish, or large, with massive trawlers and factory ships on the oceans. In the early 1800s, native game fish species were mainly valued as food sources and were commonly harvested by commercial fishermen. By the mid-1800s, these populations began to deplete, so additional sources of fish were considered. In an 1874 report by the newly-formed United States Fish Commission, Professor Spencer F. Baird suggested that the European carp (now called common carp) could solve the problem. Two years later, he again urged the Commission to consider introducing carp to the U.S. because of its ability to reproduce rapidly, grow fast, and live in waters native fish could not survive in. In 1877, the Commission made what may be the greatest fish management mistake in U.S. history. They imported 345 carp from Europe to ponds in Baltimore, Maryland. It was not long until the progeny produced by these fish were stocked into eastern lakes and rivers. Within four years, commercial fishermen were catching carp in Lake Erie and in the Illinois, Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.
