Page 4 VOLUME#:2019 – I S S U E : # : 3 - MAY/JUNE 2019 Base Commanders Report Marlin E. Helms, Jr. - MM1 (SS) Our annual elections are done and planning for upcoming events are still in progress. Looking forward to events this year, we have a num- ber of events coming up. The Secret City Festival (SCF) will be June 7th and 8th. We will be at the Peace Bell for the Tolling of the boats next to a major walkway in the festival. Our float will be positioned near there as well, a big improvement from last year where we were on the fringe of the festival. Our booth will also be near the bell in the vendor’s area putting us in the middle of the festival again, a much im- proved location. Don Keith will arrive and share our booth to sell and sign books. We will not be charged fees as we are now considered part of the festival. Our spring picnic will be at the Concord yacht club thanks to Dick Love. Andy has been sending out messages on the picnic, please respond with RSVP’s so he can plan the groceries. The bands for the SCF will be Loverboy on Friday night and .38 Special on Saturday night. Tickets to the concerts are $22 each with a $3 dollar fee if purchased on the SCF site. We will be marching in the Gat- linburg 4th of July parade again, it was an excellent experience last year and am looking forward to the experience again. Nearly 3,000 Patriots were taken prisoner, and valuable ammunition and supplies were lost to the Hessians. The prisoners faced a particularly grim fate: Many later died from deprivation and disease aboard British prison ships anchored in New York Harbor. Nov 16 1776 – American Revolution: The United Provinces (Low Countries) recognize the independence of the United States. After valiant service in Vietnam and after saving the lives of countless Ma- rines, the New Jersey was decommissioned in 1969. During that solemn ceremony, her last commanding officer, Captain Robert Peniston, spoke prophetically when he suggested that this mighty ship, “Rest well, yet sleep lightly; and hear the call, if again sounded, to provide fire power for freedom.” Well, the call has been sounded. Source: Wikipedia at http://tinyurl.com/nowc5hg. n the morning of December 7, 1941, Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) aircraft set out on one of the most famous operations in military Ohistory: a surprise air attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawai`i. The attack was devised and fashioned by Admiral Yamamoto, whose entire military career seems to have been leading to this very moment. Yamamoto was a naval officer who appreciated and under- stood the strategic and technological advantages of naval aviation. This essay will explore Yamamoto’s military career in the context of Imperial Japan’s aggressive expansion into Asia beginning in the 1890s and abruptly ending with Japan’s formal surrender on September 2, 1945, to the US and its Allies. In 1901, he passed the Impe- rial Naval Academy entrance exams with the objective of becoming a naval officer. Yamamoto genuinely respected the West—an attitude not shared by his academy peers. The IJN was significantly influenced by the British Royal Navy (RN), but for utilitarian reasons: mastery of technology, strategy, and tactics.

    USS Sculpin (SS 191) Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet USS SCULPIN (SS 191) November 19, 1943 - 62 Men Lost En route to Johnston Island, SCULPIN, under Cmdr. Fred Connaway, left Pearl Harbor on 5 November 1943. After topping off with fuel, she left Johnston on 7 November to conduct her ninth patrol in an area in the Caroline Islands. Her mission was to support the action of our surface forces in the Gilbert Islands by intercepting and attacking any enemy forces which might be proceeding from Truk toward the Marshall Islands to oppose our surface forces. She was to leave her area on 14 December, and return to Pearl Harbor, stopping at Johnston for fuel if necessary. SCULPIN was not heard from following her departure from Johnston Island on 7 November. During the patrol, Commander John P. Cromwell (promoted Captain during the patrol) was aboard SCULPIN. He was to take charge of a coordinated attack group consisting of SCULPIN, SEARAVEN, and either APOGON or SPEARFISH, if formation of the group were directed by dispatch. Should the group be ordered formed, Captain Cromwell would transmit his orders to them by low frequency radio from SCULPIN. On the night of 29 November, the vessels were directed to form and APOGON was named as the third member of the group. When Captain Cromwell gave no rendezvous orders after 40 hours, ComSubPac sent new orders. SCULPIN was to proceed immediately to Eniwetok, make a close observation, and report any enemy shipping. This was done in order to avoid confusion among the other submarines, and to determine whether SCULPIN was all right.
