  • 22 Wing Cares During the COVID-19 Pandemic La 22E Escadre Apporte
1 JANUARY / JAnvIER 2021 VOL. 55, NO. 1 22 Wing Cares during the COVID-19 pandemic La 22e Escadre apporte son aide à la communauté pendant la pandémie de la COVID-19 Article by: Captain Leah Pierce, Public Affairs Photo by: Master Corporal Alana Morin, Imagery Technician A global pandemic? Bitter temperatures? Over thirty members of 51 Aerospace Control & Warning (Operational Training) Squadron (51 AC&W (OT) Sqn) successfully challenged both the COVID-19 virus and cold weather during the 22 Wing Cares roadside stop held on Tuesday, December 8th! This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of hockey sticks was introduced to promote physical distancing when approaching motorists who donated cash. “A truly Canadian innovation,” explained Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Lunn, Commanding Officer of 51 AC&W (OT) Sqn. In an effort to encourage contactless drop offs, motorists placed non-perishable food items in the trunks of their vehicles so that awaiting volunteers could remove the bags in a seamless, coordinated manner. With a full complement of instructors, students and staff in attendance asking motorists to give generously to the North Bay Food Bank, they collected $2 593.20 in donations and 767 lbs of food for a total of 3 360 lbs of food (1 dollar = 1 lb of food). The brain child of Tom Hedican, international renowned hockey coach, 51 AC&W (OT) Sqn’s Honorary Colonel emeritus and creator of Coach4Food in 2008, the program is now under the banner of My Team Cares and coordinated by Debbie and Heath Marson. 2020 marks a decade that 22 Wing has stepped up to support those in greatest need, providing almost 70 000 lbs of food in that time, showing North Bay how much we care.
