Primitive Number Types
Primitive number types Values of each of the primitive number types Java has these 4 primitive integral types: byte: A value occupies 1 byte (8 bits). The range of values is -2^7..2^7-1, or -128..127 short: A value occupies 2 bytes (16 bits). The range of values is -2^15..2^15-1 int: A value occupies 4 bytes (32 bits). The range of values is -2^31..2^31-1 long: A value occupies 8 bytes (64 bits). The range of values is -2^63..2^63-1 and two “floating-point” types, whose values are approximations to the real numbers: float: A value occupies 4 bytes (32 bits). double: A value occupies 8 bytes (64 bits). Values of the integral types are maintained in two’s complement notation (see the dictionary entry for two’s complement notation). A discussion of floating-point values is outside the scope of this website, except to say that some bits are used for the mantissa and some for the exponent and that infinity and NaN (not a number) are both floating-point values. We don’t discuss this further. Generally, one uses mainly types int and double. But if you are declaring a large array and you know that the values fit in a byte, you can save ¾ of the space using a byte array instead of an int array, e.g. byte[] b= new byte[1000]; Operations on the primitive integer types Types byte and short have no operations. Instead, operations on their values int and long operations are treated as if the values were of type int. -
Abstract Data Types
Chapter 2 Abstract Data Types The second idea at the core of computer science, along with algorithms, is data. In a modern computer, data consists fundamentally of binary bits, but meaningful data is organized into primitive data types such as integer, real, and boolean and into more complex data structures such as arrays and binary trees. These data types and data structures always come along with associated operations that can be done on the data. For example, the 32-bit int data type is defined both by the fact that a value of type int consists of 32 binary bits but also by the fact that two int values can be added, subtracted, multiplied, compared, and so on. An array is defined both by the fact that it is a sequence of data items of the same basic type, but also by the fact that it is possible to directly access each of the positions in the list based on its numerical index. So the idea of a data type includes a specification of the possible values of that type together with the operations that can be performed on those values. An algorithm is an abstract idea, and a program is an implementation of an algorithm. Similarly, it is useful to be able to work with the abstract idea behind a data type or data structure, without getting bogged down in the implementation details. The abstraction in this case is called an \abstract data type." An abstract data type specifies the values of the type, but not how those values are represented as collections of bits, and it specifies operations on those values in terms of their inputs, outputs, and effects rather than as particular algorithms or program code. -

Data types The e language has a number of predefined data types, including the integer and Boolean scalar types common to most programming languages. In addition, new scalar data types (enumerated types) that are appropriate for programming, modeling hardware, and interfacing with hardware simulators can be created. The e language also provides a powerful mechanism for defining OO hierarchical data structures (structs) and ordered collections of elements of the same type (lists). The following subclauses provide a basic explanation of e data types. 5.1 e data types Most e expressions have an explicit data type, as follows: — Scalar types — Scalar subtypes — Enumerated scalar types — Casting of enumerated types in comparisons — Struct types — Struct subtypes — Referencing fields in when constructs — List types — The set type — The string type — The real type — The external_pointer type — The “untyped” pseudo type Certain expressions, such as HDL objects, have no explicit data type. See 5.2 for information on how these expressions are handled. 5.1.1 Scalar types Scalar types in e are one of the following: numeric, Boolean, or enumerated. Table 17 shows the predefined numeric and Boolean types. Both signed and unsigned integers can be of any size and, thus, of any range. See 5.1.2 for information on how to specify the size and range of a scalar field or variable explicitly. See also Clause 4. 5.1.2 Scalar subtypes A scalar subtype can be named and created by using a scalar modifier to specify the range or bit width of a scalar type. -

Anytime a program works with a character, it internally works with the code used to represent that character, so this program is still assigning the values 65 and 66 to letter. Character constants can only hold a single character. To store a series of characters in a constant we need a string constant. In the following example, 'H' is a character constant and "Hello" is a string constant. Notice that a character constant is enclosed in single quotation marks whereas a string constant is enclosed in double quotation marks. cout << ‘H’ << endl; cout << “Hello” << endl; The char Data Type Strings, which allow a series of characters to be stored in consecutive memory locations, can be virtually any length. This means that there must be some way for the program to know how long the string is. In C++ this is done by appending an extra byte to the end of string constants. In this last byte, the number 0 is stored. It is called the null terminator or null character and marks the end of the string. Don’t confuse the null terminator with the character '0'. If you look at Appendix A you will see that the character '0' has ASCII code 48, whereas the null terminator has ASCII code 0. -

Amadio1 Luca Cardelli CNRS-CRIN, Nancy DEC, Systems Research Center Abstract We investigate the interactions of subtyping and recursive types, in a simply typed λ-calculus. The two fundamental questions here are whether two (recursive) types are in the subtype relation, and whether a term has a type. To address the first question, we relate various definitions of type equivalence and subtyping that are induced by a model, an ordering on infinite trees, an algorithm, and a set of type rules. We show soundness and completeness between the rules, the algorithm, and the tree semantics. We also prove soundness and a restricted form of completeness for the model. To address the second question, we show that to every pair of types in the subtype relation we can associate a term whose denotation is the uniquely determined coercion map between the two types. Floating Point Numbers CS031 September 12, 2011 Motivation We’ve seen how unsigned and signed integers are represented by a computer. We’d like to represent decimal numbers like 3.7510 as well. By learning how these numbers are represented in hardware, we can understand and avoid pitfalls of using them in our code. Fixed-Point Binary Representation Fractional numbers are represented in binary much like integers are, but negative exponents and a decimal point are used. 3.7510 = 2+1+0.5+0.25 1 0 -1 -2 = 2 +2 +2 +2 = 11.112 Not all numbers have a finite representation: 0.110 = 0.0625+0.03125+0.0078125+… -4 -5 -8 -9 = 2 +2 +2 +2 +… = 0.00011001100110011… 2 Computer Representation Goals Fixed-point representation assumes no space limitations, so it’s infeasible here. Assume we have 32 bits per number. We want to represent as many decimal numbers as we can, don’t want to sacrifice range. Adding two numbers should be as similar to adding signed integers as possible. Comparing two numbers should be straightforward and intuitive in this representation. The Challenges How many distinct numbers can we represent with 32 bits? Answer: 232 We must decide which numbers to represent. Suppose we want to represent both 3.7510 = 11.112 and 7.510 = 111.12. How will the computer distinguish between them in our representation? Excursus – Scientific Notation 913.8 = 91.38 x 101 = 9.138 x 102 = 0.9138 x 103 We call the final 3 representations scientific notation. It’s standard to use the format 9.138 x 102 (exactly one non-zero digit before the decimal point) for a unique representation. -

Subtyping, Declaratively An Exercise in Mixed Induction and Coinduction Nils Anders Danielsson and Thorsten Altenkirch University of Nottingham Abstract. It is natural to present subtyping for recursive types coin- ductively. However, Gapeyev, Levin and Pierce have noted that there is a problem with coinductive definitions of non-trivial transitive inference systems: they cannot be \declarative"|as opposed to \algorithmic" or syntax-directed|because coinductive inference systems with an explicit rule of transitivity are trivial. We propose a solution to this problem. By using mixed induction and coinduction we define an inference system for subtyping which combines the advantages of coinduction with the convenience of an explicit rule of transitivity. The definition uses coinduction for the structural rules, and induction for the rule of transitivity. We also discuss under what condi- tions this technique can be used when defining other inference systems. The developments presented in the paper have been mechanised using Agda, a dependently typed programming language and proof assistant. 1 Introduction Coinduction and corecursion are useful techniques for defining and reasoning about things which are potentially infinite, including streams and other (poten- tially) infinite data types (Coquand 1994; Gim´enez1996; Turner 2004), process congruences (Milner 1990), congruences for functional programs (Gordon 1999), closures (Milner and Tofte 1991), semantics for divergence of programs (Cousot and Cousot 1992; Hughes and Moran 1995; Leroy and Grall 2009; Nakata and Uustalu 2009), and subtyping relations for recursive types (Brandt and Henglein 1998; Gapeyev et al. 2002). However, the use of coinduction can lead to values which are \too infinite”. For instance, a non-trivial binary relation defined as a coinductive inference sys- tem cannot include the rule of transitivity, because a coinductive reading of transitivity would imply that every element is related to every other (to see this, build an infinite derivation consisting solely of uses of transitivity). -
