Abstract Registration submission open from until 17 April 14 March 2016 2016 ICOH Scientific Committee Ageing and Work Second Announcement - Call for Papers International Interdisciplinary Conference Work, age, health and employment - evidence from longitudinal studies 19 - 21 September 2016, University of Wuppertal, Germany Welcome to WAHE2016 The University of Wuppertal together with the Institute of Employment Research (IAB), Nuremberg, has the pleasure of hosting the first conference on Work, Age, Health and Employment – Evidence from Longitudinal Studies 2016 (WAHE2016) in Germany. The conference – to be held on behalf of the Scientific Committee Ageing and Work, International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) – will take place at the University of Wuppertal from Monday, 19 September until Wednesday, 21 September 2016. Wuppertal is a city situated in North Rhine-Westphalia east of Düsseldorf and south of the Ruhr area along the river Wupper. With 350,000 inhabitants Wuppertal is the largest city and the capital of the Bergisches Land . Wuppertal is rich in hills, woods and green areas and well known for its suspension monorail– the Wuppertal Schwebebahn – the oldest electric elevated railway worldwide. The Wupper valley was once a dominant industrial region in Europe. The city was founded in 1929 by merging different industrial cities like Barmen where Friedrich Engels lived. It is still a major industrial centre hosting thousands of employees from different branches – a place well suited for our conference. We invite researchers from all disciplines, professionals and policy makers from all over the world to come to Wuppertal and make WAHE2016 a rich experience for all. Abstract submission is open until 17 April and we encourage all interested researchers to share their knowledge with the scientific communities meeting at our conference. We are proud to welcome well-known international key note and introductory speakers from multiple disciplines all related to the conference theme. The attendees will experience the conference theme from a multidisciplinary and international broad perspective and can contribute with their own experience and knowledge to enrich discussion and exchange. So please feel very welcome to join us at WAHE2016. On behalf of the WAHE 2016 National Planning Committee Prof. Hans Martin Hasselhorn (Chair) Dr. Jean-Baptist du Prel (Vice-Chair) Dr. Ulrich Walwei (IAB representative) wahe2016.uni-wuppertal.de – 2nd Announcement, page 2 of 5 Objectives of the Conference Trends and future perspectives on extending working lives raise a number of key challenges for research, policy and economics. Scientific evidence is required to explore whether and under which circumstances future generations of older workers will be able and willing to work longer – and as well as who will bear the costs, at both the individual and societal level, for these changes. In the past two decades many scientific disciplines and communities have been increasingly dealing with elementary questions to give the right answers to this complex issue. Research has achieved a lot in the field, but the research is unevenly distributed between countries (“regional gap”) and many specific topics in the field (e.g. older women, migrants) urgently need to be addressed from an interdisciplinary perspective (“thematic gap”). Above all, a “conceptual gap” was identified: the need for an interdisciplinary scientific broad view on the interplay of the multitude of determinants and on the process of retirement. WAHE2016 intends to address all of these “gaps” mentioned above with an international, interdisciplinary and thematic broad approach by • focusing on evidence from quantitative as well as qualitative longitudinal research , • considering the multifaceted role of work as a core determinant of health, work ability and employment participation, • bridging different research communities (e.g. occupational health, social epidemiology, economy, labour market research, psychology, sociology, gerontology, demography), and, not least • discussing the potential for advancing retirement research approaches . Call for Special Sessions, Brown Bag Sessions and Abstracts Special Sessions are intended to supplement the regular program and to provide a sample of the state-of- the-art research and highlight important directions in a field of special interest to WAHE2016 participants. If you intend to submit a Special Session it would be good to have at least three researchers who can contribute a presentation for this special session you have in mind. Scientists intending to organise a Special Session should submit their proposal directly to the WAHE organisers ( [email protected] ) as soon as possible, at the latest until 31 March 2016. Brown Bag Sessions are envisioned to facilitate networking opportunities of conference attendees who would like to discuss in greater depth a specific topic of their interest related to our conference. Such sessions can be formal with a planned agenda or informal depending upon the convener and the participants. The Brown Bag Session convener is expected to be in attendance and facilitate the meeting, which would be open to all interested WAHE2016 conference attendees. Participants are invited to submit Brown Bag Session requests (incl. a short description) until 1 July 2016 to [email protected] . Abstract submission for WAHE2016 is open now until 17 April 2016. Participants are invited to submit presentations in the form of papers or posters related to at least one of the five conference topics: 1. “Work and retirement” 2. “Work, age and health” 3. “Life course approaches in retirement research” 4. “Measuring change in longitudinal research” 5. “Cross national assessments – opportunities and challenges” Abstracts can be submitted via http://www.wahe2016.uni-wuppertal.de/abstract-submission.html . All submissions will be peer-reviewed. The peer-reviewers are nominated by the national planning committee. All authors of abstracts will be informed until the end of May about acceptance or refusal of their contributions.
