VARIEGATION IN BROMELIADS (by Luiz Felipe Nevares de Carvalho) Editorial comment (Bob Reilly) Reprinted, with permission of the Bromeliad Society International, from the Journal of The Bromeliad Society, 2000, volume 50 (4), pp. 182-185. Variegated bromeliads are often keenly sought after by collectors. In this article, the author discusses the causes and types of variegation, as well as the propagation of variegated bromeliads. Note that the process of naming a particular variegated plant can sometimes be more complex than might be inferred from the article. Variegation is a rather common phenomenon in the plant kingdom, and is found in many plant families. It is especially pronounced in Bromeliaceae. The word “variegata” comes from Latin – variegatuus, variegata, variegatum – meaning variable coloration with patches of different colors. A bromeliad is known as “variegata” when it has two or more different colors. Over 60% of cultivated bromeliads have bands, dots, lines, and streaks, and can therefore be considered variegated. However, the term is accepted in horticulture, when applied to bromeliads that have lines, streaks and longitudinal bands of contrasting colors, especially those that show differences in pigmentation between the green chlorophyll-containing tissues and albino tissues. On the other hand, if we look at the many bromeliads that grow in the wild, it appears that variegation is a rare phenomenon. As a general rule, patently variegated plants are less hardy and slower growing than normal, and those that arise spontaneously in nature normally survive the competition for space and light only when man intervenes, taking them from the wild for cultivation. Variegation is rarely found in the subfamily Pitcairnioideae, and is not particularly common in Tillandsioideae. -

It is no surprise then that the wildly diverse variations of leaf colour, shape and structural form in plants from the family Bromeliaceae (Bromeliads) for many admirers prove irre- sistibly intriguing and captivating. A little research reveals that this amazing family of plants are indeed credited with offering the widest range of variation of colour and shape within any plant family. This is not only witnessed this in the leaf, but also in the colours and shapes of the appendages associated with flowering. Beyond the seductive visuals, an understanding of the fascinating biology Brome- liads have evolved, reveals complex systems far advanced from the first plants that emerged on land during the Ordovician period, around 450 million years ago. In fact, even the earliest examples within the family are very recent arrivals to the 1 kingdom plantea appearing but 70-50 million years ago with many of the 3,000 species evolving just 15 million years ago; about the same time as primates began to populate the planet. -

PHYLOGENOMIC PLACEMENT OF ANCIENT POLYPLOIDY EVENTS WITHIN THE POALES AND AGAVOIDEAE (ASPARAGALES) by MICHAEL RAMON MCKAIN (Under the Direction of James H. Leebens-Mack) ABSTRACT Polyploidy has been an important component to the evolution of angiosperms. Recent studies have shown that an ancient polyploid (paleopolyploid) event can be traced to the lineage leading to the diversification of all angiosperms, and it has long been known that recurring polyploid events can be found throughout the angiosperm tree of life. With the advent of high- throughput sequencing, the prominent place of paleopolyploid events in the evolutionary history of angiosperms has become increasingly clear. Polyploidy is thought to spur both diversification and trait innovation through the duplication and reworking of gene networks. Understanding the evolutionary impact of paleopolyploidy within the angiosperms requires knowing when these events occurred during angiosperm evolution. This study utilizes a high-throughput phylogenomic approach to identify the timing of paleopolyploid events by comparing the origin of paralogous genes within a gene family to a known species tree. Transcriptome data derived from taxa in lineages with previously little to no genomic data, were utilized to assess the timing of duplication events within hundreds of gene families. Previously described paleopolyploid events in the history of grasses, identified through analyses of syntenic blocks within Poaceae genomes, were placed on the Poales phylogeny and the implications of these events were considered. Additionally, a previously unverified paleopolyploidy event was found to have occurred in a common ancestor of all members of the Asparagales and commelinids (including Poales, Zingiberales, Commelinales, Arecales and Dasypogonales). The phylogeny of the Asparagaceae subfamily Agavoideae was resolved using whole chloroplast genomes, and two previously unknown paleopolyploid events were described within the context of that phylogeny. -

Nothogenera (bigeneric hybrids) (41), V. Invalid nothogenus (1), and VI. Putative fossil genera (5). Comments on nomenclature or taxonomy are given when necessary to explain problematic issues, and notes on important researchers of the family are intercalated throughout. The etymological derivation of each name is given, including if named after a person, brief remarks on their identity. Appended is a chronological list of monographs of the Bromeliaceae and other works significant to the taxonomy of the family. 3 INTRODUCTION This paper catalogues all the known generic names of the Bromeliaceae. These names have appeared in the literature since the starting-point of binomial nomenclature in Linnaeus’ ‘Species plantarum’ (1753). The catalogue accounts for 187 names in six lists: I.
