PREFACE.

In presenting the 100 Years Anglo- to the public, the compiler claims no originality for his work, inasmuch as, since the year 1832,* in somewhat similar form have been yearly issued from the press in China ; but, as it is doubtful if a complete series of these exists, and as, in the transaction of business, whether official, legal or commercial, between Foreigners and Chinese, and in the study of Chinese which is now so intimately connected with foreign nations, a knowledge of the corresponding dates is quite necessary, it is hoped that this compilation will be found useful, and especially so in referring to the date of events, and in deciding the precise day, according to the Chinese and Chris- Calendars, on which they occurred. Commencing with the last quarter of the past century (1st January, 1776), the Calendar embraces the peiiod when the first British Embassy (Lord Macartney's in 1793) arrived in China. For convenience sake the Calendar has been divided into 10 parts, each embracing a period of ten years of the Christian and ends with the close of the 14th year of the reign Tung-chi, —the 25th January, 1876. The Tables, extending to some 260 pages, enable both foreigners and natives to arrive more readily and with more correctness, at the dates of their respective Calendars, than they can by the use of the Table of the .

We give in an Appendix the Table of the Cyclic Characters : j we have not used this Table, however, in our compilation, but have checked our dates by the Table of the 28 '§' hung (houses or constel- ations). As we completed the printing, we were kindly furnished by Baron Johannes Von Gumpach, with his calculations of Chinese New

Years' Days ; and were glad to find that our dates entirely agree with those ascertained by him astronomically, and by his permission we give in the Appendix a Table showing the Chinese New Years' Days for 1876 to 2000 A.D. P. L. Shanghai, September, 1872.

* The late Mr. John Robert Morrison was the first compiler of the Anglo-Chinese Calendar and it does not appear that previous to 1832 the comparative statement of the correspondence of Chinese and Christian dates, in this form, had ever been attempted.

APPENDIX. TABLE OF THE SEXAGENARY CYCLE FOR THE YEARS OF THE PRESENT DYNASTY, AND EXTENDING TO THE YEAR 1,900.

11 —

CHINESE DIVISIONS OF TIME.

We give on the other side the Table of the Sexagenary Cycle, for the years of the present dynasty, and have numbered the characters 1 to 60 to show the order they follow. It must be understood, however, that though it has been said that "this Table forms an Index by which the year of the Christian Era may be ascer- tained for any year of the Chinese Cycle of Sixty;" unless those using it are cog- nisant of the Christian and days in which the Chinese begins, it is apt to confuse, especially if the days sought are those in January and

February, in one of which months the first of the New Year invariably occurs. With reference to the Cycle of the Chinese we quote the following, from

Dr. S. Wells Williams' " Chinese Commercial Guide, " published at Hongkong, 1863, page 288 :—

"The cycle of sixty years is the foundation of the Chinese , and its application to the years, months, and days has done much to preserve their historical records from confusion. According to the received account, the Celes- tial Sovereign invented two series of characters, one of 12 branches +• 2H yfc£ sJiih 'rhchi, and the other of 10 stems ~| ~l shih Jam. The twelve branches are likewise called ti chi, terrestial and is supposed jfy Jfc& or branches, each one to be connected with a different animal, which is named upon them as here given ; and these same animals again have some mysterious influence upon per- sons born in the over which they rule. The Mongols, Japanese, Siamese, and Annamese apply the same animals to the same sign. The twelve zodiacal signs, which comprise in twelve equal spaces the 28 kung or houses through which the moon travels in her monthly course along the , are also named after the branches : — ;

The twelve branches are used to designate the twelve of the day, which begins at 11 o' p.m., and are on this account usually known as horary characters; they also indicate the twelve points of the Chinese compass, as follows : 11 to 1 3rd ) -^ or N. 1 3 da; 4th „ -JJ „ N. N. E. | E. 3 5 at 5th % „ E.N.E.|N. 5 7 JJP „ E. 7 9 jg „ E. S.E. f E. 9 11 (J^^P forenoon) g, „ S. S. E. f E. 11 1 P.M. ^ „ S. 1 3 CK^P afternoon) % „ s. s. w. t w. 3 5 4* » w. S. W. To express European hours, it is enough to add j£? kiau and j£ clang to

ching tsz' is midnight, fcwwt chau is 1 the characters ; thus |£ -^ ^ -J£ o'clock a.m. and so throughout; but these when mentioned are more usually numbered in imitation of the foreign mode, which has become widely known through the use of . A table for the convenience of natives, to show the correspondence of the foreign hours is often inserted in their almanacs. they The ten stems are also called ^ ^ tien kan, or ; are sometimes named and described after the five elements, according to the pecu- liar philosophy of the dual powers current among the Chinese, each element being exhibited in its state, corresponding to its passive and active condition. Each of them is regarded as destroying its predecessor, and produ- cing its successor, in a perpetual round. 1 is allied to , and represented by a growing tree timber; ,, „ „ a hewn —

, and the twelve branches five times, as shown in the table. This was in the year b.o. 2G37. The Chinese have never kept up a serial numbering of the cycles, and have no longer chronological period than 60 years. Some native authors begin the reckoning with the first year of Hwangti's reign, b.c. 2G97, making 7G cycles at the end of a.d. 1863 ; Guignes follows this calculation ; but Chinese chrono- logers mostly take the later date of b.c. 2G37, which makes the 75th cycle and the 4500th year of their annals to end with 1863. The year b.c. 2G37 is placed by Hales as 518 years after the deluge, and about 80 years before the confusion of tongues. Some again begin their chronology with the first year of the 7th cycle, in the reign of Yau, b.c. 2277; Pere Eegis adopts this date." The following Table shows the years in which the 7G Cycles (up to the present time) commenced: CHINESE CYCLES. WITH THE YEARS OF THEIR COMMENCEMENT.
