Rosen, Ph.D. Rebecca Snyder, Ed.D. Maryann Woods-Murphy, Ed.D. Katherine Bassett, M.Ed. April 2017 We at the National Network of State Teachers of the Year (NNSTOY are most pleased to share with you the latest in our series of Research Reports. In this report, we focus on measures of social and emotional learning and their efficacy in educator evaluation. Using multiple approaches – literature review and three focus group panels – we examined what the field says about these measures and well as what expert teachers – State and National Teachers of the Year and Finalists for State Teacher of the Year think. I worked for twelve years at Educational Testing Service in the area of performance based assessment across a continuum of educator practice. One of the first maxims that I learned was: ‘…not everything that is important can be measured and not everything that can be measured is important.’ A second was ‘…we must not use assessment measures for pur- poses for which they have not been developed or validated.’ I also had the privilege of working with a team of expert research scientists, including Dr. Richard Roberts, to examine the efficacy of assessing social and emotional characteristics and their mallea- bility in educators. So, this study is of particular interest to me. Can we actually measure social and emotional characteristics, and, are they malleable? In other words, can we teach things like empathy, caring, persistence? Should we include measures of these characteristics in teachers as part of consequential evaluation? As expert educators, we deeply desire accountability measures. -

Lee, Chair My dissertation concerns the development of the literary motif of “lovesickness” (sangsa py ǒng ) in late Chos ǒn narratives. More specifically, it examines the correlation between the expression of feelings and the corporeal symptoms of lovesickness as represented in Chos ǒn romance narratives and medical texts, respectively, of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As the convergence of literary and medical discourse, lovesickness serves as a site to define both the psychological and physical experiences of love, implying the correlation between mind and body in the non-Western tradition. The analysis itself is re-categorized into the discussions of the feeling and the body. In the discussion of the feeling, it will be argued that the feeling of longing not only occupies an important position in literature, but also is gendered and structured in lyrics and narratives of the seventeenth century. In addressing the rubric of feelings of “longing,” this part seeks the ii theoretical grounds of how the intense experience of longing is converted to language of love and to bodily symptoms to constitute the knowledge of lovesickness. The second part concerns the representation of lovesick characters in Korean romance, particularly concerning the body politics of the Chos ŏn society. -

Summary Zest is a positive trait reflecting a person’s approach to life with anticipation, energy, and excitement. In the present study, 9803 currently employed adult respondents to an Internet site completed measures of dispositional zest, orientation to work as a calling, and satisfaction with work and life in general. Across all occupations, zest predicted the stance that work was a calling (r ¼.39), as well as work satisfaction (r ¼.46) and general life satisfaction (r ¼.53). ‘Doing Love’ Online: Performative Gender and the Urban Everyday by Jacqueline Schoemaker Holmes B.A. Carleton University, 2001 M.A. York University, 2003 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Sociology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April, 2010 ©Jacqueline Schoemaker Holmes, 2010 Abstract While much has been said about the role of online dating in transforming the nature of intimate relationships and love in Canada and beyond (Bauman, 2003; Ben-Ze‘ev, 2004; Brym and Lenton, 2001) there has been no systematic study of the pursuit of hetero-romantic love online as a practice of both the everyday and of gendered selfing. In January 2007, I began an eight-month investigation into the everyday practices of urban professionals online dating in Vancouver, Canada to study what role new media play in producing particular kinds of gendered selves through the pursuit of love online. By engaging with critical readings of feminist theories to explore the ways love has evolved as a theoretical concept and an enduring, increasingly technologically-mediated social practice, I forward the concept of ‗doing love‘ as a contemporary way individuals perform gender online. I argue that the pursuit of hetero-romantic love, that is, ‗doing love‘ online, is a contemporary gendered selfing project that is both individualized and routinized as part of a larger gendered discursive field that seeks to position heterosexuality, as tied to hetero-romantic love, as natural, necessary, and inevitable. Gendered selfing, through the pursuit of hetero- romantic love, requires coherence and approval by others and is in this sense policed. -

This study examined how the love variables (intimacy, passion, commitment and the six love styles) are differences between genders and relationship stages. In addition, associations between love variables and relationship satisfaction among local romantic partners were studied. Method. Participants were eighty-two couples who have involved in a romantic relationship (dating or married). They completed questionnaire which assessed their love styles, level of intimacy, passion, commitment, and relationship satisfaction. Results. Gender differences in love styles and stage effect on the triangular love components were found. Participants’ scores on all love components were found to be positively related to satisfaction. Specific love styles, Eros was found to be positive predictor on satisfaction for men and women. Agape was found to be a positive predictor, but only for men. Ludus, was found as a negative predictor for satisfaction and commitment for both genders. Discussion. Results suggested love styles, Eros, Storge and Agape, as well as intimacy, passion and commitment were positively related to satisfaction. A distinct finding of the discrepancy in passion leaded to higher satisfaction raise an interesting issue to be discussed. -

I had experienced it as a teen and thought of it as part of first love. Does the Bible talk about lovesickness? There are many forms of sickness such as homesick, carsick, seasick, lovesick, even heaven sick. (Phil.1: 23) “But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better.” These can be experienced at any age. To answer your question, the Bible does mention lovesickness in the Song of Solomon (SOS 2:5; 5:8). The word lovesick consists of two Hebrew words (achabah) [love] and (chalah / kal ptc) [sick] “Sustain (samak / piel pf) me with raisin cakes, refresh (raphad / piel impv) me with apples, because I am lovesick.” (2:5) This was a natural remedy for the physical problems associated with lovesickness. This lesson will study Five aspects of Lovesickness. 1. Lovesickness is not related to age, but rather to romance of the heart. It is part of the early stages of romantic love. · It is part of the early stage of romance known as infatuation love -“You have made my heart beat faster with a single glance of your eyes.” (SOS 4:9) When the young of age experience it, we refer to it as puppy love. · It is part of the early stage of intimacy interest. · It is part of the early stage of commitment interest. -

O objetivo desta investigação foi verificar o papel da música na atração interpessoal, escolha de parceiros e relacionamentos afetivos. Cinqüenta adultos não-músicos escolheram possíveis parceiros através de classificados pessoais, descreveram as características de ouvintes de 7 gêneros musicais diferentes e responderam a questões referentes ao uso da música em seus relacionamentos afetivos. Embora a música não tenha tido um efeito direto sobre a atração interpessoal e a escolha de parceiros, ela aparentou ter alguns efeitos indiretos nas relações interpessoais. Alguns estereótipos de personalidade associados aos gêneros musicais foram encontrados, sugerindo que o gosto musical pode influenciar na escolha de parceiros. Além disso, emergiram quatro categorias relacionadas ao uso da música no contexto das relações interpessoais: objetivos de excitação, fundo acústico, facilitadora de atividades que promovem a aproximação e artefato mnemônico. For some clients, the conversation focuses on longing for loved ones “back home,” along with concerns about finding good friends in a new place. For too many, the loneliness and a sense of alienation stem from relationships that have soured. There are sons who do not feel connected to their fathers, boyfriends who feel invisible to their partners, wives who “don’t know” their husbands anymore, and aging par- ents who haven’t seen their children in years. All these people tell painful stories of loss. When our basic needs for love, affection, and belongingness are not met (Maslow, 1970; see Figure 13.1), we feel lonely and worthless. This pain has long-term effects because our growth is stymied when we feel detached and unloved. We start our discussion of attachment, love, and flourishing relation- ships with comments on loneliness because much of the positive psychol- ogy of social connection was built on scholarship pertaining to traumatic separation (Bowlby, 1969) and failed relationships (Carrere & Gottman, 1999). Only recently have scholars pursued research questions such as, “What are the characteristics of successful relationships?” (e.g., Gable, Reis, & Elliot, 2003; Harvey, Pauwels, & Zicklund, 2001). Attachment and love are necessary components of flourishing relation- ships, but they are not sufficient for the maintenance of such relationships. In this regard, attachment and love must be accompanied by what we refer to as purposeful positive relationship behaviors.
