CENTRAL BLUE MOUNTAINS ROTARY CLUB INC. “Service above Self” District 9685, Australia A SHORT PRECIS (Who, What and Where !) WHO AND WHAT ARE WE ? Central Blue Mountains Rotary is one of five rotary Clubs located in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. We are innovative and progressive... we are a “Can Do” group of Rotarians, proud of what we achieve, and we have fun doing it. We are a club of 43 members (40 active and 3 honorary). In Rotary, women are the fastest growing membership segment and we are proud to say that 25% of our members are women. Our club meets weekly on Wednesday at the “Grandview Hotel”, 174 Great Western Highway, Wentworth Falls at 6.30pm. Our meeting format is relaxed and we have great guest speakers. Sure, we sell raffle tickets and we cook and sell sausage sandwiches just like other Rotary clubs - we have a big catering van to do this....It’s great! But our community service activities are the heart of what we do, ranging from local projects to helping communities overseas. We have a website http://centralbluerotary.org/ Perhaps our greatest challenge at present; We have been awarded a RAWCS Project Fund to raise A$280,000 to construct a new, enlarged Astha Home for Girls in Kathmandu, Nepal. The massive earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015 caused much upheaval to the lives of many people and destroyed or damaged many homes and buildings, especially in the hills and valleys outside of Kathmandu. The Astha Home for Girls is currently located in rented premises but the owner wants it back for his family members who lost their home in the earthquake. -

Mapping Aboriginal nations: the ‘nation’ concept of late nineteenth century anthropologists in Australia Kevin Blackburn From the late 18th century to the end of the 19th century, the word ‘nation’ underwent a change in meaning from a term describing cultural entities comprised of people of common descent, to the modern definition of a nation as a sovereign people. The politi- cal scientist Liah Greenfeld called this shift in the definition of the word nation a ‘semantic transformation’, in which ‘the meaning of the original concept is gradually obscured, and the new one emerges as conventional’.1 The historian Eric Hobsbawm noted that the New English Dictionary ‘pointed out in 1908, that the old meaning of the word envisaged mainly the ethnic unit, but recent usage rather stressed “the notion of political unity and independence”’.2 The political scientist Louis Snyder observed that the ‘Latin natio, (birth, race) originally signified a social grouping based on real or imag- inary ties of blood’. However by the end of the 19th century the term ‘nation’ had come to mean an ‘active and conscious portion of the population’, who shared a ‘common political sentiment’.3 The work of historians Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger suggests that in the 19th century a nation was not only a cultural group of people of common ethnic origin, but such a group of people who in addition believed that they were a united political entity possessing or desiring sovereignty.4 The cultural anthropologist Benedict Anderson has described the idea of the nation as an ‘imagined community’. He argued that a nation ‘is imagined because the members of even the smallest nations will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives their communion’. -

The discovery of a passage across those hither to unassailaole mountains by ulaxland,Lawson and wentworth,after repeated failures by no less than thirteen other expeditions;the extended discoveries beyond Blaxland s furthest point by ueorge William Evans,and the subsequent construction of the road,follow -ed each other in rapid sequence,and proud indeed was i.acquarie, now that his long cherished hopes and ambitions promised to be realised,and a vast,and hitherto unknown region,added to the limited area which for twenty-five years represented the English settlement in Australia. 18 Lachlan River Catchment Maitland Mercury & Hunter River Advertiser, 5 April 1862 True Tales of the Trout Cod: River Histories of the Murray-Darling Basin 18-1 The Lachlan (From the Empire’s Correspondent) March 30 – The continued absence of rain causing stoppage of the puddling machines for want of water, is the sole reason of the small escort leaving tomorrow. As before stated, the river, one mile distant, is tabooed for washing purposes to the last dregs, so that the returns per escort will diminish until we are blessed with the winter’s rain. Great quantities of fish have this week been picked up by hand out of the bed of the lagoon between the Victoria and Caledonian loads, some of the codfish weighing over 30 pounds weight, besides bream, perch and jewfish, the latter being one of the oddest of the finny tribe, presenting the appearance of half newt, with porpoise head and feelers round the mouth. This fish deposits its ova in a gravelly cell on the bottom using stones of upwards of a pound weight in their construction (as a blackfellow asserts). Certain it is that little mounds, of beehive form, abound in this lagoon, containing gravel. PARLIAMENT HOUSE ART COLLECTION Since the formation of the Parliament House Art Collection in the 1980s, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art has been a collecting priority for the Parliament’s Art Advisory Committee. Of the 4,000 contemporary works in the rotational collection, more than 660 are by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Artists in the collection represent every state and territory in Australia, and urban as well as regional and remote areas of Australia are represented across a wide range of media including painting, photography, new media, glass, ceramics, bark paintings, works on paper, sculpture, weaving and textiles. These works are displayed in Senators and Members offices, in the general circulation spaces of the building and in the public areas. The Parliament House Art Collection is managed in accordance with the Charter of Principles for Publicly Funded Collecting Institutions. The Charter provides a framework that promotes professional best practice in the acquisition, management and reproduction of artworks by Indigenous artists across the nation. -

Indigenous oral history brings life to our community narratives and portrays so well the customs, beliefs and values of our old people. Much of our present day knowledge system relies on what has been handed down to us generation after generation. Learning through intergenerational exchange this Indigenous oral history research thesis focuses on Indigenous methodologies and ways of being. Prime to this is a focus on understanding cultural safety and protecting Indigenous spoken knowledge through intellectual property and copyright law. From an Indigenous and Wiradjuri perspective the research follows a journey of exploration into maintaining and strengthening ethical research practices based on traditional value systems. The journey looks broadly at the landscape of oral traditions both locally and internationally, so the terms Indigenous for the global experience; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander for the Australian experience; and Wiradjuri for my own tribal identity are all used within the research dialogue. ! !
