The Basics The Four Seasons About Omaha Omaha enjoys all four seasons – pack accordingly • Metro Population: 877,110 Spring – Highs in mid 60°s, Lows in the 40°s • Largest City in Nebraska Summer – Highs in the 80°s, Lows in the mid 60°s • Located in Douglas County Fall – Highs in the 70°s, Lows in the 50°s • Smoke-Free Bars & Restaurants Winter – Highs in the mid 30°s, Lows in the mid-teens • Bars Close at 2am • Sales Tax is 7% William, Meriwether, Thomas & Abe Lewis and Clark put Omaha on the map before there were maps, making it a key stop on their excursion west. Omaha sits on a part of Thomas Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase, and Abraham Lincoln decided Omaha was the perfect spot to start the transcontinental railroad. A noteworthy bunch who saw the potential of this river city.

A fun way to get a taste of Omaha’s history is by going on one of The Durham Museums’ River City History Tours. Hop on a trolley and learn about Omaha’s Millionaires and Mansions, Expositions and Musicians, the Magic City, Trip Tip and the Gritty City, a light-hearted look back on the city’s seamier side.

Take Your Pic There are a lot of fun photo ops throughout the city—Omaha is Instagram heaven!

On the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge you can stand in two states at the same time—one foot in Nebraska and one foot in Iowa.

Unique public art throughout is just begging you to feed it. This is one of 13 unique park benches in the Gene Leahy Pedestrian Mall.

Stand next to a real ‘Fork in the Road’ @ 1115 S 7th St in Omaha’s Little Italy neighborhood.

If you’re wondering what the heck grain silos look like, these are some of the coolest around. The best way to see these giant works of art is to drive east on I-80 toward Downtown Omaha.

Touching Chef Boyardee’s Toque (chef hat) is said to bring good luck in the kitchen. This 6’ tall statue sits in front of ConAgra Foods’ World headquarters at 10th and Farnam.

Get into the act with the ornate and beautiful bronze street performers who juggle, mime and stilt-walk in front of CenturyLink Center Omaha.

See how big you are compared to one of the largest public murals in the country. Fertile Ground can be seen from almost anywhere in the North Downtown area.

Take part in a stampede through the city with a larger-than-life wagon train that startles a herd of buffalo and scares a flock of geese that fly into the high-rise First National Bank Tower. You’ll find it at 15th and Capitol Avenue and can follow it as it travels 7 city blocks.

2013 Omaha Visitors Guide 43 VisitOmaha.com What to See & Do • Sports & Recreation

What to See & Do Sports & Recreation Nature Calls For birders, walkers, and bikers, the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge connects nearly 150 miles of nature trails and provides picturesque views of the Missouri River Valley. The Keystone Trail meanders along 27 miles of the Papio Creek. And Omaha’s 5 lakes—Cunningham, Zorinsky, , Lawrence Youngman, and Bennington Lake—offer fishing, boating, and recreational activities all year long

Located along the wooded Missouri River valley and along a main migratory path, it only makes sense that the Omaha area is a birding hotspot. Spring and fall are peak seasons but because the area offers diverse bird habitat—lakes, prairies, woodlands, and riverbanks—you will find a wide variety of bird species most any time of year. Look for the yellow-billed cuckoo in the summer, the dickcissel in May, the tufted titmouse in November, and pelicans have been known to stop over around Easter.

Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge Tubing and Tanking Forget the boat—try tubing and tanking down the scenic Elkhorn River. Which should you choose? It depends on how wet you want to get. With tanking, you float down the river in an 8-foot- diameter stock tank fitted with custom made picnic tables. With tubing, you are a little more intimate with the water, sitting in commercial-grade innertubes with your feet and other body parts dangling in the river. Both offer a fun way to float and enjoy the outdoors.
