URL of article: http://www.nebraskahistory.org/publish/publicat/history/full-text/NH1972Chadron_Race.pdf Date: 6/22/2011 Article Summary: Horse racing was a popular sport of the American West. As preparations were made for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, with its emphasis upon American accomplishments and customs, it was not surprising that someone suggested a horse race from the West to Chicago. The ride was designed to pit skilled Western horsemen against each other over a one thousand-mile route spanning the three states of Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois. This article presents the planning, the promotion, the opposition, and the story of the actual race. Cataloging Information: Names: A C Putnam, N H Weir, William

Gunstream 1 Home Rule or Rome Rule? The Fight in Congress to Prohibit Funding for Indian Sectarian Schools and Its Effects on Montana Gunstream 2 Preface: During winter break of my sophomore and senior years I went on a headlights trip to Browning, MT with Carroll College Campus Ministry. We worked at a De La Salle Blackfeet School, a private catholic school that served kids from fourth through eighth grade. I was inspired by the work they were doing there and from my knowledge it was the only Catholic Indian school in Montana and this perplexed me—it was my knowledge that the original Catholic missions had schools on the reservations. In April of my sophomore year I went to Dr. Jeremy Johnson’s office to discuss writing an honors thesis on the relationship between the government and Indian reservation schools in Montana. He was very excited about the idea and told me to start reading up on the subject. I started reading on the history of the Catholic missions in Montana. I was interested by the stories of the nuns and priests who came a long ways to start these missions and serve the Native Americans. And I was interested in how prominent the Catholic Church was in the development of Montana. So I asked myself, what happened to them? The authors of the books answered this question only briefly: the federal government cut funding for these schools between 1896 and 1900, and the mission schools could barely survive without these funds. Eventually, some faster than others, they withered away.

  • 2014 GIVING REPORT It’S No Surprise to Us, Our Donors and the Giving Community Are Among the Most Generous in the Nation - and They Made 2014 an Incrdible Year!
2014 GIVING REPORT It’s no surprise to us, our donors and the giving community are among the most generous in the nation - and they made 2014 an incrdible year! The donors working through the Omaha Community Foundation had a record year. They gave over $173 million to nonprofits which ranked 5th in the nation for most generous among community foundation donors. That level of giving surpassed community foundations in Chicago, New York, and Boston according to the annual report published by CF Insights. Another important milestone for the Foundation was achieved this year. We surpassed $1 billion in assets which make us the 17th largest community foundation nationally. In addition, this was a record year for people joining our family of donors – 159 accounts were opened in 2014. These milestones and record level of growth are important today, but it also means that there will continue to be community investment in our nonprofits long into the future. Our donors love this community and continue to find more ways to make it the best it can be. We exist to help them accomplish those hopes and dreams. Our community’s future is bright. The Omaha Community Foundation connects people who care about our community with the people and nonprofits who are doing the most good here. Over $1.2 billion has been granted to nonprofits on behalf of our donors. And since 1982, our family of over 1,300 donors has given over $1.6 billion to charitable giving accounts at the Omaha Community Foundation. Much has been accomplished, but we are ready to do more.

  • Forgotten Heroes
Forgotten Heroes: Sam Hairston by Center for Negro League Baseball Research Dr. Layton Revel Copyright 2020 “Sam Hairston Night” – Colorado Springs (1955) “Sam Hairston Night” at the Colorado Springs Sky Sox Ball Park Sam Receives a New Car (1955) Hairston Family at Colorado Springs Ball Park “Sam Hairston Night” (front row left to right - Johnny, Sam Jr., Wife and Jerry) (1955) Samuel Harding Hairston was born on January 20, 1920 in the small town of Crawford, Lowndes County which is in the eastern part of the state of Mississippi. He was the second of thirteen children (eight boys and five girls) born to Will and Clara Hairston. Will Hairston moved his family from Crawford to the Birmingham area in 1922. The primary reason for the move was to find better work so that he could support his large family. Will became a coal miner and worked alongside Garnett Bankhead who was the father of the five Bankhead brothers who all played in the Negro Leagues. By 1930 Will had gained employment with American Cast Iron and Pipe (ACIPCO) as a laborer in their pipe shop. According to United States census records the Hairston family also lived in North Birmingham and Sayreton. Sam spent his formative years in Hooper City and attended Hooper City High School. Reportedly Sam did not finish high school and when he was 16 he told the employment office at ACIPCO that he was 18 and was given a job working for the company. According to Sam he went to work to help support the family and give his brothers and sisters the opportunity to go to school.
