    Who wrote the Chard Reports? A Stylometric Analysis By Dr. David I Holmes, The College of New Jersey, USA ___________________________________________________________________________________ 1. The Chard Reports The senior officer at Rorke’s Drift on the fateful afternoon of Wednesday 22nd January 1879 was 31- year-old Lieutenant John Chard. Chard was a Royal Engineer who had only arrived in South Africa on January 5th and whose duties at Rorke’s Drift were to supervise the construction of a redoubt overlooking the river and to build ponts. His immediate superior, Major Spalding, had gone to seek reinforcements, leaving Chard and Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead, the officer in charge of the garrison’s B Company of the second battalion of the 24th Regiment to take care of the station. Chard’s peace was disturbed when at about 3.30pm he noticed two horsemen galloping towards the drift from the direction of Isandlwana bringing with them the dreadful news of the massacre. Within an hour, the attack on Rorke’s Drift had begun. Within two days of the battle Chard submitted a perfectly sequential report of the engagement that was complete in extraordinary detail. This first ‘Chard Report’ became the ‘official’ report concerning the attack on the mission station and it was this report that Lord Chelmsford forwarded to the War Office. The many suspicions arising from the preparation of this report are covered in detail in Anglo- Zulu War historian Adrian Greaves’ book Rorke’s Drift (2002). Greaves finds it remarkable that Chard could obtain a sufficient supply of clean undamaged paper when all available paper had been burnt in the hospital fire or destroyed during the fighting.

Wherever I look there is a sea of colour, even in the heart of the ‘concrete jungle’ as I call the Downtown region. At this time of year the conversation often turns to botanical matters, with people talking about their favourite flowers, or flowers they associate with things of importance in their lives. Ever since they first came into bloom I have noticed more daffodils around me, in Church and elsewhere, than I can ever recall, maybe because there is more association through the Welsh community here or maybe because I now feel a personal association to my ‘homeland far away’ through my noticing the daffodil everywhere. I recently found out that the flower of the province of Ontario is the White Trillium, a flower of the Lily family, sometimes called the wake-robin as it blooms around the same time as the appearance of the first robins in the Spring. These flowers used to grow all over the Maritime Provinces but are hardly seen there at all by today. Here in Canada they now only grow strongly in southern Ontario and parts of Quebec. As the name suggests the flower is white in colour and the petals occur in threes, very much like the clover. As it matures, the flower turns a shade of pink.

Scottish History ​The Battle at Rorke’s Drift It was the summer between my junior and senior year and my friend Don and I decided to “take in a movie.” So we walked to downtown Hamilton (One might refer to it as the local shopping center. But it was way more than that. It was THE shopping district for the whole area and everybody went there. It was a distance of about a mile. Which really didn’t mean much to us at that time because we walked everywhere. Don said the movie was called Zulu. “What's it ​ ​ about? I asked.” “It's supposed to be a good war movie” was his response. We bought our tickets and found some ‘good’ seats. Now this is a phrase you’ll likely never hear again in your lifetime; “Remember where we came in.” An hour or two later it would be followed by, “Is this where we came in?” Way back then, when you bought your ticket it entitled you to stay in the movie theatre as long as you wanted. They showed the same movie all day long with newsreels and cartoons in between showings. So you might arrive somewhere in the middle of the movie and after the movie ended, you stayed to watch the beginning of the movie. It could give you interesting insights into how movies were made and how characters and the plot developed.

The first one is on Tuesday October 4th and we hope you will be able to come along to set the season off to a good start. An extra event not included on your programme is a tour of Elmers End cemetery which will be on Sunday 11th September. The tour will be conducted by Mr Castle the local florist and nurseryman whose business is right opposite the cemetery. As the tour is on a Sunday the main gates will not be open so cars will have to be parked outside the cemetery but this should not present any difficulties. Walk through the cemetery to the car park which is just past the crematorium, from where we will be starting at 3.00 p.m. Please wear stout sensible shoes. For our last meeting on July 5th Mr Andrew Scott, the Ecologist for the Corporation of London Kent and Surrey Commons Office, gave a most interesting talk and slide display on the history of West Wickham Common and Spring Park.     The Commandants: The Leadership of the Natal Native Contingent in the Anglo-Zulu War By Keith I. Smith, B.A. Hons (Macq.) This thesis is presented for the degree of Master of Arts of the University of Western Australia. School of Humanities October, 2005 Abstract The senior Imperial officers who took part in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 are comparatively well known and their service in that brief period has been well documented, as indeed has that of many of their junior colleagues. Much less, however, is known about the officers who served as commandants of the Natal Native Contingent, although more than half of them were Imperial officers on special service duties. Most of the rest were British ex-officers who lived in South Africa, while one of the remaining two was an adventurer and mercenary. Many of them had already found service with the South African force during the Ninth Cape Border War against the Ngqika and Gcaleka which had only ended in mid-1878. According to official documents, the Natal Native Contingent initially numbered more than 8,000 native troops, in three regiments, under the command of European officers and non-commissioned officers.1 At the time of the invasion of Zululand in January, 1879, the contingent therefore made up about 62% of the invading force. This bald statistic, as so often, hides the true story. The thesis examines each of the commandants, and the extent to which their abilities and personalities were reflected in the performance of the native troops under their command, while at the same time revealing the evolution of the Contingent itself as an arm of the invading force under Lieutenant General Lord Chelmsford.

    Colour Sergeant Frank Bourne Brian Best _________________________________________________________________________________________ It is fair to say that most of us who are fascinated by the Anglo Zulu War had their initial interest fired by the film ZULU. I would also suggest in most people’s opinion, the outstanding character in this milestone of a film was Colour Sergeant Bourne as portrayed by Nigel Green. His powerful ramrod presence, coupled with a rumbling bass voice, was memorable and the lines of dialogue he delivered are still quoted by enthusiasts thirty-five years after they first heard them. Despite the enjoyment and interest the film created, it was full of errors and false characterisations. Michael Caine’s languid and arrogant Bromhead, Jack Hawkin’s drunken and raving Otto Witt and, most scurrilously of all, James Booth’s interpretation of Private Henry Hook as a malingering alcoholic Cockney.(1) Colourful though Nigel Green’s depiction was, it also bore little true resemblance to Colour Sergeant Frank Bourne.(2) The real Frank Bourne was born on 27th April 1854 and was, therefore, much younger than Nigel Green’s portrayal. His family were farmers at Balcombe, a Sussex village between Haywards Heath and Crawley. Perhaps, because he was the youngest of eight sons and bottom of the pecking order that he felt there was little chance of inheriting the farm. The prospect of spending the rest of his life within the narrow environs of a rural community probably did not appeal to this intelligent and active youth. Despite his father’s attempts to prevent his son leaving the farm to join the army, with all the stigma that such service implied, young Bourne travelled to the nearest recruiting centre at Reigate and volunteered on 18th December 1872.

    The Hero of Rorke’s Drift By Keith I. Smith B.A. (Hons) A common perception of those not familiar with the engagements of the Anglo-Zulu War is that Rorke’s Drift was dominated by one character: Lieutenant John Rouse Merriott. Chard, R.E. This assessment has been fostered, for the general public, by the film ‘Zulu’, made many years ago and yet still universally popular, with its scenes of heroism on both sides. The fact that the film altered the real natures of the characters seems to be immaterial: Hook, for example, is shown as a wild young man with a bad soldiering record, who was regarded as a malingerer. The facts are that Hook was nearly 30 years of age at the time of the battle, was a teetotaller and was awarded Good Conduct pay just prior to the battle taking place.1 He did not marry until 18 years after the battle, thus giving the lie to his odd relationship with the film’s Sergeant Maxfield, who supposedly sent money to Hook’s wife. The two leading stars portray Chard as a man with a typically British stiff upper lip while Bromhead is the snob who belatedly recognises Chard’s courage and leadership ability. Those who have read more closely about the engagement will hardly be in a better position to judge, since both Chard and, to a lesser extent, Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead, commanding officer of ‘B’ Company, 2/24th Regiment, are usually shown to be the heroes of the hour. Virtually every account of the engagement, from Coupland2 to Laband,3 gives the lion’s share of the praise to these two officers.

Our monthly talks will continue on Zoom for a little while longer yet and we will be introducing more guest speakers. Our January Zoom talk was well attended by over forty members and guests. You gave our first guest speaker, Mike Smith, a warm welcome and positive comments on his talk on The Battle of Gallipoli 1915/16. In The Great War the troops from New Zealand were described as ‘coming from the furthest ends of the earth’ to fight for king and country and further support came from Britain’s other colonies and dominions.

    Colour Sergeant Frank Bourne The 1964 film Zulu was based on the heroics in 1879 of a contingent of 122 of the Warwickshire Regiment at Rorke’s Drift in Natal, South Africa fighting off attacks by a force over 3,000 warriors seeking to protect their homeland from the British invaders. There is a memorable portrayal of Bourne by the actor Nigel Green perfectly typecast to play the role of the backbone of the British Army – the senior non-commissioned officer. The Regiment was based in Brecon and later became the South Wales Borderers; thus the haunting use in the film of Men of Harlech to balance the stamping feet and beating shields of the unbelievably brave Zulu warriors who, armed only with their assegais (stabbing shields) threw themselves at the British guns. Nigel Green’s memorable portrayal in the film was inaccurate: Green was 40 and tall; Bourne was 5’ 6” and 24 years old – the youngest NCO in the battle. For his part in the defence of Rorke’s Drift, Bourne received the Distinguished Service Medal, the second highest award after the Victoria Cross. He was also offered a commission but had to decline for he was the youngest of eight sons and his family could not afford the mess fees and other expenses demanded of the officer class. But he stayed in the army which he had joined in 1872 at the age of 18. After Rorke’s Drift, Bourne saw service in India and Burma reaching the rank of Quarter-Master Sergeant in 1884. Subsequently he became a commissioned officer and in 1901, aged 45, he had reached the rank of Captain and was the Adjutant at the famous School of Musketry in Hythe.
