Records Service Croome Collection Coventry Family History George William Coventry, Viscount Deerhurst and 8th Earl of Coventry Born 16th October 1784, the first son of George William (7th Earl) and his second wife, 'Peggy'. He succeeded as Earl in 1831. He married his first wife Emma Susannah Lygon, 2nd daughter of Lord Beauchamp of Madresfield, Worcestershire, in 1808. Together they had one son, George William. Emma died only 2 years after their marriage and in 1811 the 8th Earl eloped to Scotland with Lady Mary Beauclerk (1791-1845), only daughter of Aubrey Beauclerk, 6th Duke of St Albans. They remarried on their return to England. George William and Mary together had a daughter, Mary Augusta, and a son, Henry Amelius Beauclerk. Not long after their marriage Mary had affairs with two of George William's younger brothers, amongst others. Newspaper reports on the various affairs of the 8th Earl's wife and the affairs he had in retaliation meant the reputation of the Coventry family had suffered greatly during this period. George William died 15th May 1843 at Coventry House, from an 'unsound mind'. In September 1834 the 8th Earl's eldest son and heir was blinded in a shooting accident at Donnington, just a few miles from Sir Charles Cockerell's new Indian Palace at Seizincote, Gloucestershire. He spent time in Seizincote recovering, where he met Sir Charles's eldest daughter, Harriet Anne Cockerell (1812-42). They became inseparable and decided to marry. Together they had a daughter, Maria Emma Catherine, and a son, George William (later 9th Earl). George William, Viscount Deerhurst, died from consumption, 5th November 1838. When the 8th Earl died in 1843, the title went to his grandson, George William, then aged only 5 years old. www.worcestershire.gov.uk/records .

COVENTRY, Connecticut By Stephanie Summers Some 20 miles east of Hartford lies Coventry, a place Native Americans called Wangumbaug, meaning “crooked pond,” after the shape of the then-300-acre lake within its bounds. The town is probably best known as the birthplace of America’s young Revolutionary War hero Nathan Hale, who when captured as a spy against the British and facing the gallows said, “I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” But its claims to history are much more varied. From the Civil War to the onset of the Great Depression, its strategic waterways fed one of the highest concentrations of mills in New England, with, at the peak, 16 plants built along the Mill Brook. To this day, South Coventry Village retains its authenticity, interrupted by two small, modern-day commercial retail buildings. Used primarily by the Mohegans as a hunting ground with no signs of settlement, the land was given in a will to a group of white settlers in 1675 by Joshua, third son of the sachem Uncas. Sixteen white families, mostly from Hartford and Northampton, Mass., settled the area in 1709. It was named for Coventry, England, in 1711 and incorporated a year later. A church and grist mill were established in short order. In 2010 the U.S. Census estimated Coventry’s population at 12,428 in an area of 38.4 square miles within Tolland County. During the Revolution, the town was of a considerable size, with 2,032 white and 24 black residents. The town divided itself into two societies of sorts, connected to the two early churches.

MiFriendly Cities – Migration Friendly Cities Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton 2017/18-2020/21 Summary In partnership with Coventry City and Wolverhampton City Councils, Birmingham City Council has been successful in securing EU funding to deliver a three year MiFriendly Cities project. The project, which is backed by West Midlands Combined Authority, will see the three Councils working together to develop new and innovative activity which can help integrate economic migrants, refugees and asylum seekers into the West Midlands. This approach provides an opportunity for Birmingham City Council to explore how it can work with partners and migrants in a way which can help to expand the current range of activity, which mostly focuses on addressing the basic needs and legal rights of migrants. As part of this approach there is a particular focus on changing attitudes to migrants, developing employment pathways, social enterprise and active citizenship. Coventry City Council will be managing the whole project but Birmingham City Council will be required to project manage and coordinate activity which specifically relates to Birmingham, across all the different work packages and activities. Birmingham has also been asked to lead the regional work on “Active Citizenship”. Introduction Following a competitive bidding process “MiFriendly Cities” was chosen by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as one of three projects across Europe which they would like to support. This was from two hundred proposals which were submitted. To support the delivery of the MiFriendly Cities project the EU is providing €4,280,640 over three years to Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton City Councils. This is irrespective of the Brexit process and the UK leaving the EU in 2019.
