My uncle, being a father, was my intro to boxing and boxing books. I was first exposed to Muhammad Ali as a young child watching some old bands in my uncle's house. I remember thinking how he could be the greatest when he lost so many times. Of course, the undefeated champion beats several times champion every day of the week. I remember watching Ali light the Olympic flame in Atlanta as a 12-year-old and wondering why this guy was a hero, why he loved so much. Then I read The King of the World: The Rise of Muhammad Ali and the American Hero (1998) by David Remnick. Its been more than 15 years since I read this book, shortly after it was first published. As anyone who has read any Remnick will know, they are written with a style and imagination that describes all their work. It's a great book. It was one of the first books I read that put any athlete in the cultural context in which they acted.

MARCH/APRIL 2006 BY WALLACE MATTHEWS Muhammad Ali Punches Back at Parkinson's Ba}ling the disorder with the same conviction that made him a champion in and out of the ring. Slowly and with great effort, Muhammad Ali eased himself onto a couch in a quiet corner of the museum that commemorates his remarkable life. His once- magnificent body, now withered by age and illness, was virtually swallowed up in the soft leather pillows. He seemed oblivious to the horde of photographers jostling behind an aluminum mesh screen for a shot of the former world heavyweight champion in repose. Surrounded by visions of past glories at home in 2001, Ali fights on. With his twin daughters, Rasheda and Jamilla, kneeling by his side, Ali gazed at a stained-glass skylight in the ceiling. He spoke to no one and no one spoke to him. He was once the most public figure the world had ever known, but these days his words, thoughts, and dreams are strictly private property. The sound and fury have been replaced by silence and tranquility. Muhammad Ali doesn't rumble anymore and he doesn't boast. The fastest man heavyweight boxing had ever seen now shuffles slowly, the once astonishingly handsome face a lifeless mask, the familiar voice stilled. "Muhammad is a man of few words now," Lonnie Ali, his wife of 19 years, had said earlier that day last November at the gala opening of the Muhammad Ali This 1997 portrait reminds us why Ali has always called Center in Louisville. "He himself "pretty." spends a lot of his time quietly, reading and contemplating." It has now been 22 years, and quite possibly longer, since parkinsonism began its relentless march through Ali's nervous system.

a 16 b Negotiation and Professional Boxing Habib Chamoun-Nicolas, Randy D. Hazlett, Russell Mora, Gilberto Mendoza & Michael L. Welsh* Editors’ Note: In this groundbreaking piece, a group of authors with unimpeachable expertise in one of the least likely environments ever considered for negotiation analyze what is actually going on in the professional boxing ring. Their surprising conclusions take the facile claim of our field that “everybody negotiates” to a whole new level. Not only does this chapter serve as a kind of extreme-case demonstration of why students should consider learning negotiation to be central to any occupation they may take up in future; it might well serve as inspira- tion for some new studies in other fields in which negotiation may previously have been thought irrelevant. Introduction Referee Judge Mills Lane, a former marine and decorated fighter in his day, was blindsided. Mills, a late substitution due to an objection from the Tyson camp, issued an early blanket warning to keep punch- es up. According to our own analysis of the fight video (Boxingsociety. com 1997), defending heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield gained an early advantage with a characteristic forward lunging style. Following a punch, Holyfield would lock up with the smaller Mike Tyson, shoulder-to-shoulder, applying force throughout. Holyfield fin- ished the round clearly in the lead. At the 2:28 mark in the second, a * Habib Chamoun-Nicolas is an honorary professor at Catholic University of Santiago Gua yaquil-Ecuador and an adjunct professor and member of the ex- ecutive board at the Cameron School of Business at University of St.
