    “MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME” “My Old Kentucky Home” is the state song of Kentucky. Although there is no definitive history on the playing of the Stephen Foster ballad as a Kentucky Derby tradition, it is believed to have originated in 1921 for the 47th running. Reports provide evidence that 1930 may have been the first year the song was played as the horses were led to the post parade. It is well-documented by historians that the lyrics were influenced by Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the original handwritten lyrics show that the initial working title of the song was “Poor Uncle Tom, Good Night.” In his autobiography My Bondage My Freedom, Frederick Douglass wrote that the song, “awakens sympathies for the slave, in which antislavery principles take root, grow, and flourish.” In the context of modern times, the legacy of the song is met with some debate. Since 1936, with only a few exceptions, the first verse and the chorus have been performed by the University of Louisville Marching Band as the horses make their way from the paddock to the starting gate.     The Legacy and Traditions of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby has taken place annually in Louis- ville, Kentucky since 1875. It was started by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. at his track he called Churchill Downs, and it has run continuously since that first race. This first jewel of the Triple Crown has produced famous winners, with thirteen of these winners gaining that Triple Crown title. Lewis limited the Derby to only 3-year old horses. The race has evolved and grown over time and has changed since its first running, remaining an important event for more than a century. The running of the Kentucky Derby, broadcast all over the world as the “greatest two minutes in sport,” allows us to remember our Kentucky home, the Kentucky folks we grew up with, have left behind or have lost. When we hear the words and melody of the plantation ballad, My Old Kentucky Home, written by the bard Stephen Foster, we grow nostalgic for our Kentucky past. At the Federal Hill estate in Bardstown resides My Old Kentucky Home is a place that symbolizes our Kentucky heritage, our genteel way of life, our common ancestry. Every man, woman and child in the Commonwealth knows that My Old Kentucky Home is owned by the people of Kentucky and that knowledge is a point of fierce pride. For every Kentuckian knows that as long as My Old Kentucky Home stands, every Kentuckian, no matter how humble their station in life, owns a Kentucky mansion and a Kentucky home. There is no horse racing experience like the Kentucky Derby. Going to Churchill Downs on Friday Oaks Day or on Saturday for the Kentucky Derby is a treat almost without comparison.
