Upper School Dress Code 2017-2018 As of July 2017 Ranney’s Upper School Dress Code is intended to establish an environment which is conducive to learning. Students should come to school looking neat and clean, dressed in appropriate school attire that fits properly. Students should remain well-groomed and follow a routine procedure for proper hygiene. Students May Wear: ● Shirts: ○ Students must wear a collared, button-down dress shirt, or Ranney-issued polo every day ○ Dress shirts or polo shirts must be worn under all sweaters, sweatshirts, and/or blazers ○ All shirts must be tucked in ○ Ties are optional ● Dress Shirt Details: ○ Style: Button-down, Oxford, or Broadcloth cotton shirts ○ Color: Any ○ Patterns: Solid, checks, or stripes ○ Not allowed: Flannel ● Polo Shirt Details: ○ Ranney School polo shirts that have been purchased through Ranney School Athletics, Student Council, Clubs/Activities, Lands’ End, etc. are permitted. ● Sweaters or Blazers: ○ Style: Any style without a hood ○ Color: Any solid color ○ Logos: Small, discrete logos on breast pocket are allowed ● Sweatshirts: Sweatshirts MUST be Ranney-issued and worn over appropriate shirts. ● College Sweatshirts: College sweatshirts may be worn only by seniors after midterms. ● Pants: ○ Style: Slacks, dress pants, khakis, or corduroy* ○ Colors: Blue, black, gray, or khaki ○ Patterns: Only solid colors are allowed ○ Slim Fit: Allowed ○ *Rivets: Rivets are the round, metal studs often found on jeans. They are allowed on corduroy pants ONLY ○ Not allowed: Jeans/denim pants, cargo pants, pants with flap pockets, sweatpants, leggings, “jeggings”, spandex, or linen pants ● Belts: If your pants have belt loops, you must wear a belt. All colors/styles of belts are allowed. ● Skirts: ○ Style: Cotton or corduroy ○ Color: Blue, black, gray, or khaki ○ Patterns: Only solid colors are allowed ○ Length: Skirts cannot be shorter than 3-5 inches above the knee (depending on height) ○ Not allowed: Denim, spandex, silk, or leather skirts ● Tights ○ Color/Style/Pattern: Any color. Tights must be solid and opaque. ○ Not allowed: Tights with designs, fishnet, cutout patterns, etc. are not allowed. ● Footwear: ○ Shoe Height: All shoes must be flat ○ Shoe Style: Any suede, leather, or boat shoes are allowed ○ Shoe Color: Only solid color shoes are allowed ○ Socks: Optional. Any style and any color socks are allowed ○ Boots: Rain boots and winter boots are allowed during times of inclement weather. ○ Not allowed: Sneakers or shoes with sneaker-like soles, flip-flops, slippers, heels, and open-toed shoes are not allowed. Students May Not Wear: ● Slogans: ○ Clothing with slogans, advertisements, or inappropriate* content is not allowed ○ Undershirts with the content listed above should not be seen through a dress shirt ● Undergarments: Undergarments that can be seen through one’s shirt, pants, or skirt (those containing bright or dark colors, for example) are not allowed ● Sleeveless or short tops: Any clothing that does not cover a student’s shoulders and/or midriff is not allowed. As such, sleeveless shirts and/or shirts with “spaghetti straps” are not allowed ● Damaged clothing: Clothing with visible rips, tears, or stains is not allowed ● Hats: Hats are not allowed on regular OR Dress Down Days, except for religious purposes or medical excuses (proper documentation is required; please submit to the Upper School Office) ● Pajamas: Pajamas are not allowed ● Dresses: Dresses are only allowed on Dress Down Days and on Special Event Days, as announced ● Shorts: Shorts are only allowed on Dress Down Days after Spring Break *inappropriate material is at the discretion of the administration Hair, Makeup, and Accessories ● Hair: ○ Style and Color: Hairstyles must be neat; hair color must be a natural hue ○ Length: Hairstyles should not interfere with a student’s ability to see or to be seen by others (in cases of a student’s hair covering the eyes or face) ○ Facial Hair: Facial hair is not allowed, except for religious or health reasons (proper documentation is required; please submit to the Upper School Office) ● Makeup: Makeup should be subtle and neat. Excessive makeup is not allowed. ● Piercings: Only ear piercings are allowed, except for religious reasons (proper documentation is required; please submit to the Upper School Office) ● Tattoos: Tattoos or other forms of body art are not permitted and should not be visible. “Dress for Success” F Days: On every F Day (the day on which Upper School Town Hall Meetings occur), students are expected to “Dress for Success” by wearing the best version of our Dress Code. Acceptable dress on F Day is as follows: ● Button-down shirts and ties, blazers, skirts, dress pants, blouses, flats, or heels of moderate height ● NO dress-down items will be permitted on “Dress for Success” days ● NO polo shirts will be permitted on “Dress for Success” days ● NO dresses will be permitted on “Dress for Success” days (unless special instructions are given) ● NO sweatshirts/athletic gear are permitted on “Dress for Success” days (even if there is a game) Dress Down Days: ● On Dress Down Days, students are still expected to look neat and clean ● Clothes must fit properly ● Clothes may not have rips, tears, stains, inappropriate images, or inappropriate language* ● No undergarments should be visible under a student’s clothing ● Students may wear: jeans, sweatpants, pants with cargo or flap pockets, pants with rivets, pants with appropriate logos, leggings (worn with long shirts), or a dress/skirt of appropriate length ● Shirts with hoods are permitted on Dress Down Days ● Hats are NOT allowed on Dress Down Days ● Shorts are permitted on Dress Down Days after Spring Break, but must be of an appropriate length (no shorter than 3 inches above the knee) ● Shoulders and midriffs must still be covered (no “spaghetti straps” or sleeveless tops allowed). ● Sneakers and Toms are allowed on Dress Down Days ● Slippers and flip-flops are NOT allowed on Dress Down Days *inappropriate material is at the discretion of the administration Exam Days: ● Students may dress down during midterm and final exam weeks ● Students taking an AP exam may dress down on the day of the exam “Game Days” (including athletic events, competitions, and Performing Arts): ● On an athletic game or meet day, students can wear the following athletic gear: ○ Uniform Jersey or Warm-up Jersey (students must wear a white shirt underneath any type of sleeveless jersey) ○ Team-issued T-shirt (must be for the team you are competing on that day) ○ Ranney-issued White-Out Spirit Shirts are allowed on Game Days ○ If the game/meet/performance/competition is on a Saturday, students may wear these items to school on the day before (Friday) ○ The same guidelines apply for competition t-shirts (Robotics, etc.) and Performing Arts ○ Aside from the team shirt, the rest of a student’s outfit should be in regular dress code. .
