International Manifesto of the Youth against Populism, TITLE/ TITULO/ TITRE: Fundamentalism, Fascism, and the Far Right Akbayan Youth ORGANIZATION/ ORGANIZACIÓN/ ORGANISATION: Philippines COUNTRY/ PAÍS/ PAYS: LINE/ LÍNEA/ RESOLUTION/ RESOLUCIÓN/ RÉSOLUTION LIGNE: 1 The world is under siege. Populism, fundamentalism, fascism, and the far right are rapidly rising all 2 over the globe, hijacking public opinion with their politics of hate, violence, disempowerment, and 3 intolerance. 4 5 This global siege challenges the values for which civil society movements have fought, struggled, 6 and bled for decades and centuries. Today, the victories of the international movements for human 7 rights, peace, religious pluralism, and racial and gender equality are in danger. 8 9 The siege rises out of the failures of the liberal agenda, which have resulted in massive inequality 10 and the concentration of power and wealth in the very few. The reweighing of values that followed 11 these failures was not only predictable but inevitable. The world cried for change. Change never 12 came. What came was a swift and audacious attack – a promise to bring the existing order to its 13 only logical conclusion. 14 15 The promise is vivid. To save sections of populations from ruin, the other sections must be eradicated. 16 Thus, instead of challenging the powerful few, the global siege of populism, fundament- KINDLY NOTE THAT THE LATEST DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING RESOLUTIONS TO THE IUSY SECRETARIAT IS SUNDAY 31st DECEMBER AT 23:59 CET. In fact, fascist movements like the National Radical Camp have 23 already called for a White Europe. These groups blame the refugees, the Jews, people of color, 24 women, indigenous peoples, and other minorities for the economic crises and terrorism in Europe. 25 At the same time, Vladimir Putin continues to present a threat to the independence of Eastern 26 European nations, while subjecting critics in Russia to human rights violations and enabling the 27 persecution of LGBTs in Chechnya. 28 29 In America, Donald Trump has consistently blamed immigrants and people of color for the job 30 insecurity created by US capitalism. He intends to deport masses of people and to build a wall against 31 Mexico. His remarks of hate have also targeted female critics with sexism and threatened North 32 Korea with war. Likewise, the far right is gaining ground in Latin America, endangering the region 33 with the resurgence of Washington’s agenda and the neoliberal package. At the expense of social 34 services for the rest of the population, the far right pushes for the adoption of austerity measures and 35 limited government in Latin America. 36 37 In Asia, Rodrigo Duterte blames drug dependents, many of whom are poor, for the crime rates in the 38 Philippines and has sanctioned the murder of thousands of poor Filipinos. He has also threatened to 39 bomb schools for indigenous peoples and persecuted and imprisoned critics of his government. 40 Meanwhile, the Myanmar government under Aung San Suu Kyi has burned down entire villages of 41 the Rohingya, all in an effort to cleanse the largely Buddhist country of the Muslim minority. The result 42 is hundreds of thousands of refugees living in camps and makeshift settlements – a situation 43 recognized as the world’s fastest growing refugee crisis. Finally, Xi Jinping’s China, under a claim of 44 ownership, is unilaterally building military bases in the territories of Southeast Asian nations, and has 45 arrested pro-democracy activists from the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong. 46 47 In Africa and the Middle East, fundamentalism under ISIS has executed Muslims and non-Muslims 48 alike in an effort to establish a global caliphate. ISIS fundamentalism grows out of a distorted, 49 puritanical interpretation of Islam, driving adherents to radicalism and religious violence – even 50 against Muslims who disagree with such an interpretation. This religious fundamentalism has 51 captured nations in the Middle East, attacked the governments of several African nations such as 52 Egypt, Niger, and Mali, and launched terrorist skirmishes in Europe. 53 54 We are the youth of the world. When the dust settles, we will inherit the world that will have been left 55 by this global siege of populism, fundamentalism, fascism, and the far right. Even as we presently 56 face this siege, we will also be its victims tomorrow. 57 58 We refuse to inherit a world of hate. The past generations fought, struggled, and bled for the values 59 being challenged today. We, too, have fought, struggled, and bled for these values. We refuse to 60 allow these values to be eroded. We will resist. 61 62 We will resist violence with humanism. Our insistence that humanity is not only inherent in but shared 63 by every human being, regardless of race, color, creed, gender, sexuality, and social status, underlies 64 our firm commitment to human rights. Within this humanist framework, there is no room for abuse 65 and violence, much less for the annihilation of entire sections of a population. War, whether internal 66 or international, whether in the guise of ending crime or immorality or otherwise, solves none of the 67 problems our societies face. What we need are the building of humane relationships and total human 68 development. 69 70 LINE/ LÍNEA/ RESOLUTION/ RESOLUCIÓN/ RÉSOLUTION LIGNE: 71 We will resist disempowerment with equality. In the face of wide social cleavages and massive 72 economic inequality, the answer is not the eradication or suppression of some for the benefit of 73 others. Native workers have nothing to gain out of the deportation and persecution of migrant 74 workers. Men have nothing to gain out of the attacks against women and LGBTs. The answer is 75 substantive equality, not only in terms of human dignity and natural rights, but also in terms of social, 76 economic, and political power. 77 78 We will resist intolerance with solidarity. People of color, cultural and religious minorities, worKers, 79 women, LGBTs, and the poor – whether Asian, African, Middle Eastern, American, or European – all 80 have one thing in common. We are the many who are oppressed by the few. Even as we celebrate 81 our diversity, we will unite upon this commonality. The global siege has brought to light the fragility 82 of the mere tolerance and formal equality we have won in our struggles. It is time to unite for justice. 83 84 We are the youth of the world. We will resist. 85 .
