THE SCHOOL In 1959 Sammamish opened its doors and graduated its first class in spring of 1961. Sammamish is one of four comprehensive high schools in the located in the suburb of Bellevue, . It serves a student population of 1160 in an ethnically and economically diverse area of Bellevue. Sammamish teachers organize their instruction around a framework of seven “Key Elements,” which is designed to build students’ skills at defining and solving real-world problems. The seven elements are: Authentic Problems, Authentic Assessment, Academic Discourse, Collaboration, Culturally Responsive Instruction, Expertise, and Student Voice. Sammamish has been recognized as a Microsoft Showcase school for its implementation of One-to-One laptop technology. The technology is allowing students to increase collaboration with peers, teachers, and outside professionals. Laptops and the associated software also provide universal access to new ways of accessing, learning, and presenting information. Sammamish students can earn college credit by Advanced Placement, College in the High School through the University of Washington and , Tech Prep, and Running Start programs. We offer multicultural and affinity group student organizations including Latino Heat, Black Student Union and Students Organizing Against Racism. We also offer AVID, a student support program targeted towards students who would be the first in their family to graduate from college.

Graduation Requirements English 4.0 credits THE CURRICULUM Mathematics 3.0 credits Sammamish’s academic program is organized around a Lab Science 3.0 credits seven-period day allowing students to access a wide array of course work. Most Sammamish graduates Social Studies 3.5 credits exceed the graduation requirements, especially in math Fine Arts 2.0 credit and science. Physical Education 1.5 credit Career/Technical Ed 1.0 credit GRADING AND RANKING Health 0.5 credit assigns letter grades using a 4.0 system. No “+” or “-” are included on the official Electives 5.5 credits transcript or calculated into the GPA. All credited Total Credits 24.0 credits classes are included in computing grade point average. SBA Exam Reading Class rank is no longer computed. Credits earned Requirements Writing elsewhere are noted with the “TR” symbol preceding the Math course name. Due to the closure of schools during the Covid19 Additional Minimum 2.0 GPA Quarantine, Bellevue School District high school Requirements 40 hours of students in grades 9-12 received an “A” for second service semester of the 19-20 school year if they regularly engaged in the assigned activities and met the minimum curriculum standards. Graduating Seniors in the Class of 2020 may have also received a “V” grade which denotes a non-credit waiver for a course needed to meet graduation requirements. The “V” grade is granted due to extenuating circumstances during the Covid19 Quarantine when online learning was in place in the District.

Advanced Placement (AP) AP courses are open-enrollment available to all students. In 2019-2020, 547 students sat for 1044 AP exams. Of the 547 students, (64%) received scores of 3, 4 or 5. Sammamish High School offers 23 classes to prepare students for Advanced Placement exams that include English Language, English Literature, World History, US History, US Government and Politics: US, Biology, Chemistry, Physics 1 & 2, Environmental Science, Psychology, Statistics, Calculus AB/BC, Micro/Macro Economics, Computer Science, Human Geography, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, Chinese Language, French Language and Art Portfolio.
