What is the role of the language textbook in the New Media Age? What are its functions and what should be its qualities? Is the textbook really needed in the time when a significant part of education is being held virtually? Why and how is it necessary to pay attention to the textual aspect of language textbooks? What role does authenticity mediated by textbooks play in language education? The main aim of this presentation is to discuss these questions and to suggest some answers and solutions. The author of the article considers the textbook (the choice of it or its creation) an important challenge in the process of creating and teaching language courses. One of the reasons is currently insufficient research related to textbooks used in adult language education, which is something that needs to be pointed out. Foreign language textbooks should be seen as a valuable source of didactic and authentic texts to remain an important part of the Communicative Language Teaching. This topic needs attention both from the point of view of pedagogical research and the view of the user or author of a foreign language textbook. Keywords: foreign languages, Czech, textbooks, didactics, teaching 1. INTRODUCTION What is the importance of the language textbook in the Era of Multimedia? What is its role and its function? Is a textbook still needed in a time when a significant part of education is being held virtually? Why and how is it necessary to pay attention to the textual aspect of language textbooks? What role does authenticity mediated by textbooks play in language education? The main aim of this paper is to discuss these questions and to suggest some answers. The author considers the textbook (the choice of it or its creation) an important challenge that requires attention from three points of view: that of pedagogical research, and of both the author and user of a foreign language textbook. Why has the textbook become a challenge over the past decade? The language textbook market is very diverse and each publication deals with continuously developing and strengthening competition. New teaching materials are being produced and older time-proven materials are being up-dated. Another question is if textbooks are still a necessary didactic material in a time when any text can be transformed into an electronic version. In a time when a number of mobile applications are used. In a time when, thanks to the internet and its tools, we can use a large number of programs enabling interactivity to create teaching materials. Modern didactic materials are therefore more attractive from the user´s point of view and they comply with the needs, habits and skills of current language students. 9 Proceedings of IAC in Vienna 2020 ISBN 978-80-88203-20-9 Nowadays the tendencies towards online education are more and more intense, which is justifiable. However, at the same time, there exist educational environments where virtual and multimedia education is not enabled.1 We don´t have to refer only to developing countries to show other examples of educational environments where online teaching and learning is inaccessible or even not required. For example, Czech language education for senior citizens usually doesn´t succeed without a paper version of a textbook. Friesen (2017) describes the current situation in his book: “In an age of social media, twitch speed, and Twitter, it is easy to portray the classroom and blackboard as unnatural, unmodern, unexciting, and uninspiring. These old contexts and forms are all readily seen as outmoded and obsolete – particularly for new generations of digital native students” (p. 4). Without questioning the indisputable advantages of e-learning programmes, online tools, etc.,

AMIRAN 8.1 INTRODUCTION The countries around the Mediterranean have experienced far-reaching changes in land quality and land use. The centres of very early, highly developed civilizations of the western world were here. Together with their great achievements they brought about intensive use of the land-sometimes exceSSIveuse. The political changes that affected the area during a millennia of its history involved similar changes, for better or for worse, in husbanding of the land. Extensive areas of olive groves-famous since antiquity-fruit orchards and vineyards, many of them grown on carefully terraced slopes, indicate but some of the prominent achievements of mediterranean agriculture. By con- trast, periods of decline, being sometimes periods of depopulation, brought about very adverse effects, in particular abandonment of cultivated land and disrepair of the terraces. In consequence there was erosion of the soil, and downwash into the valleys of the lowland plains; there was excessive sedimen- tation in these valleys, choking the river and wadi beds, and sometimes followed by formation of swamps owing to lack of drainage; and not infre- quently malaria affected these swampy areas. This whole syndrome of land deterioration is illustrated in many mediterranean countries. A classic case is Israel of the nineteenth century. Israel showed some significant achievements in agriculture and land development in antiquity, and the deterioration is easy to follow in detail. Two factors bring about particu- larly significant effects of processes of land transformation.

Goldberger* Abstract Background: Regional variations in mortality can be used to study and assess differences in disease prevalence and factors leading to disease and mortality from different causes. To enable this comparison, it is important to standardize the mortality data to adjust for the effects of regional population differences in age, nationality and country of origin. Methods: Standardized mortality ratios (SMR) were calculated for the districts and sub-districts in Israel, for total mortality by gender as well as for leading causes of death and selected specific causes. Correlations were assessed between these SMRs, regional disease risk factors and socio-economic characteristics. Implications for health policy were then examined. Results: Total mortality in the Northern District of Israel was not significantly different from the national average; but the Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Southern districts were significantly higher and the Jerusalem, Central, Judea and Samaria districts were lower. Cancer SMR was significantly lower in Jerusalem and not significantly higher in any region. Heart disease and diabetes SMRs were significantly higher in many sub-districts in the north of the country and lower in the south. SMRs for septicemia, influenza/pneumonia, and for cerebrovascular disease were higher in the south. Septicemia was also significantly higher in Tel Aviv and lower in the North, Haifa and Jerusalem districts.
