BUOT JR. Institute of Biological Sciences, University of the Philippines Los Baños ABSTRACT The leaf architecture of Malvaceae sensu APG was examined and characterized to determine if it can be used in classification of the family and the identification of its species. Forty species were observed, measured and described. A dichotomous key was constructed based solely on leaf architecture characters. The dichotomous key indicated that leaf architecture characters can be used in distinguishing some species of Malvaceae sensu APG. Some basic leaf architectural characters can also be used in describing certain clades within the family. It is recommended that specimens are collected personally instead on relying on available specimens in the herbarium. Preparation of leaf skeletons through clearing method can also be done in future studies. Increase of sample size is also recommended. KEYWORDS: leaf architecture, APG, classification INTRODUCTION Malvaceae Jussieu, nom. cons is a newly circumscribed family of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG, 2003). This family now comprises 243 genera and 4225 species which are mainly tropical in distribution. In the APG system, member families of Malvales like Sterculiaceae, Bombacaceae, Tiliaceae and Malvaceae sensu strictu were merged to become Malvaceae sensu APG (or lato). This lumping of families became controversial and gained criticism from some taxonomists. Cheek (2006, see also Cheek in Heywood et. al., 2007, Stevens, 2010) opts for a full dismemberment of the super family into ten separate families (Bombacaceae, Malvaceae, Sterculiaceae, Tiliaceae, Durionaceae, Brownlowiaceae Byttneriaceae, Helicteraceae, Pentapetaceae, and Sparrmanniaceae).

Anatomical characters which are significant for species delimitation include: the presence/absence of sclerenchyma cells associated with the xylem in the midrib; presence/ absence of starch grains in the mesophyll and midrib; the presence/absence of secretory ducts on the adaxial surface of the midrib; the presence/absence of medullary plates in midrib; the number of secretory ducts in the midrib and the midrib adaxial outline.

Extracts from samples of different morphotypes leaves of this species were analysed for their phytochemical compositions, antioxidant and cytotoxicity activities. On each sample extract, qualitative phytochemical tests were used to detect the presence of bioactive molecules and evaluate their cytotoxicity using brine shrimp lethality bioassay. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl assay.

Chung1, E. Soepadmo1 Key words Abstract A revision of the genus Microcos in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore was conducted resulting in the recognition of twelve species. Six taxa (M. antidesmifolia var. antidesmifolia, M. fibrocarpa, M. lanceolata, M. latifolia, Malvaceae-Grewioideae M. laurifolia and M. tomentosa) are common and occur more or less throughout Peninsular Malaysia. Four species Microcos (M. globulifera, M. hirsuta, M. latifolia and M. tomentosa) are recorded for Singapore. One species (M. riparia) Peninsular Malaysia is newly recorded for Peninsular Malaysia, and two species (M. erythrocarpa and M. malayana) are endemic to Singapore Peninsular Malaysia. A complete list of exsiccatae, key, nomenclatural typification and synonymy, descriptions and taxonomic revision illustrations are provided for all twelve species. Initially this appeared to be the first verified Bomberai record of Seringia from SE Asia and to extend the range of the genus c. 1 500 km further north than the previously Gunung Botak recorded northern limit in Northern Territory, Australia. Further research, however, showed two previous specimens nickeliferous of the taxon from New Guinea, which had been overlooked. Khattab Department of Botany and Microbiology, Faculty of Science, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt. *Corresponding author:[email protected] Abstract Systematic relationships in the Malvaceae s.s. and allied families were studied on the basis of numerical analysis. 103 macro- and micro morphological attributes including vegetative parts, pollen grains and seeds of 64 taxa belonging to 32 genera of Malvaceae s.s. and allied families (Sterculiaceae, Tiliaceae, Bombacaceae) were scored and the UPGMA clustering analysis was applied to investigate the phenetic relationships and to clarify the circumscription. Four main clusters are recognized viz. Sterculiaceae s.s. cluster, Tiliaceae- Exemplars of Strerculiaceae cluster, Malvaceae s.s. cluster and Bombacaceae s.s. – Exemplars of Sterculiaceae and Malvaceae cluster. The results delimited Sterculiaceae s.s. and Tiliaceae s.s. to containing the genera previously included in tribes Sterculieae and Tilieae respectively; also confirmed and verified the segregation of Byttnerioideae of Sterculiaceae s.l. and Grewioideae of Tiliaceae s.l. to be treated as distinct families Byttneriaceae and Spermanniaceae respectively. Our analysis recommended the treatment of subfamilies Dombeyoideae, Bombacoideae and Malvoideae of Malvaceae s.l. as distinct families: Dombeyaceae, Bombacaceae s.s. and Malvaceae s.s. and the final placement of Gossypium and Hibiscus in either Malvaceae or Bombacaceae is uncertain, as well as the circumscription of Pterospermum is obscure thus further study is necessary for these genera. Cola cheringoma is described from the limestone gorge forest of the Cheringoma Plateau in Sofala Province of Central Mozambique. Tentatively treated previously as C. clavata Mast., it differs in being rest- ricted to limestone substrate, the leaves drying white-green below (not on sandy soils, drying dark grey- brown). The tepal number of female flowers is 5 (not (5 –) 6), staminode number 5 (not 8), and the indumentum of the outer perianth covers only 50 – 60% of the surface with two distinct hair classes (not 100% coverage with a single hair type). The species is assessed as EN B2ab(iii) using the IUCN 2012 standard due to threats from the low number of locations, quarrying, and habitat modification. The Cola species growing in forest on limestone in tropical Africa are mapped and reviewed with respect to their status as obligate or facultative calcicoles, and with respect to their probable evolutionary origin. Based on morphological characters, adaptation to limestone habitats has probably occurred at least four times in the genus. Forests on limestone are rare and threatened in tropical Africa: only thirteen locations are known with certainty: these occur in Kenya (10 locations), Tanzania (2 locations) and Mozambique (1 location).
