SHIPPING DATE: AUGUST 13, 2007 (estimated) STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 03, 2007 ARTIST MERLE HAGGARD TITLE Hag The Studio Recordings 1969 - 1976 LABEL Bear Family Records CATALOG # BCD 16749 PRICE-CODE FK EAN-CODE 4000127 167491 ISBN-CODE 978-3-89916-329-2 FORMAT 6-CD boxed set (LP-size) with 140-page hardcover book GENRE Country TRACKS 165 PLAYING TIME 467:21 KEY SELLING POINTS • A true legend of American music captured in his prime! • The follow-up to Bear Family’s hugely acclaimed 'Untamed Hawk' set. • All the studio recordings between 1969 and 1976, including 15 straight #1 country hits. • Includes Vietnam era classics like Okie From Muskogee and The Fightin’ Side Of Me, as well as the more moderate unreleased song Somewhere In Between. • More than 20 other unreleased performances! SALES NOTES Merle Haggard occupies a unique place in American music. The man who gave voice to the Silent Majority went on to become a counter-culture favourite. He has scored hits in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, and still works 200 sold-out road dates a year. Ever since Bear Family released 'Untamed Hawk' in 1995, we’ve been asked for a follow-up comprising the rest of his legendary Capitol recordings. This is it…on 6 CDs, and it covers the tumultuous years between 1968 and 1976. The only exclusions are his Jimmie Rodgers tribute (already issued on a single CD by Bear Family) and the live recordings, which will be released in a companion volume. These were the years when Merle Haggard polarized the USA with songs like Okie From Muskogee and The Fightin’ Side Of Me, yet, as this set reveals, his approach to politics was more nuanced than many thought at the time.

  • Cindy Walker
Cindy Walker Cindy Walker, prolific and influential songwriter, was born on July 20, 1918 near Mart, Texas. Her father was a cotton-broker, but music ran in the family on her mother’s side. Her maternal grandfather, who composed hymns, may have been her earliest influence as a songwriter, and her mother was a singer and pianist. Walker’s early interest was in poetry, but she began a theatrical career at age ten, appearing in a traveling vaudeville production called the "Toyland Revue." She taught singing and dancing and began writing songs before she was in her teens. In 1936, she became part of the singing and dancing chorus for Casa Mañana, the immense dinner theater revue mounted by the legendary Billy Rose for the Ft. Worth site of the Texas Centennial celebration. Walker reportedly wrote a song entitled “Casa Mañana,” which bandleader Paul Whiteman adopted as the theme for the radio broadcast from the nightclub after he heard her singing it. Following an unsuccessful marriage, at age 22 Walker returned to her parents, who settled in Phoenix, Arizona. She accompanied her parents on a business trip to Los Angeles in 1940. While driving down Sunset Boulevard, she noticed Bing Crosby’s office building and insisted that her parents stop the car so she could run in with her briefcase full of songs. Walker talked the receptionist into letting her in to see Crosby’s brother Larry, who agreed to allow her to sing one song for him. Walker chose to play a song called “Lone Star Trail.” Larry Crosby took her to Paramount Studios the next day, where she played “Lone Star Trail” for Crosby and music composer/publisher Lester Santly.

  • “The Stories Behind the Songs”
“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.

  • A News Letter for and About Our Members the Journey from String
PO Box 14003 Mill Creek, WA 98082 Celebrating Founded Our 34th Year In 1983 Visit us on the web at: www.nwwsms.com Volume 34 Issue 11 A News Letter For and About Our Members November 2017 Preserving the music that is too country for Jazz and too jazz for Country (Our thanks to Jean A. Boyd for her extensive, published research into the America’s Western Swing Music music known as Western Swing, the Jazz of the Southwest. Dr. Boyd has The Journey from String Bands approved of the following compilation) to Swing Bands Editor’s Note: This year, Fred and I had the opportunity to take part in western swing events of the three western swing sister societies, the NWWSMS, the WSS, and the WSMSS. The similarities as well as the differences were striking - but a feeling of community and sense of belonging tied them all together. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to view String Bands to Swing Bands, from the NWWSMS’ 2016 festival, the script to the video segment is printed below. Dr. Boyd maps this connection out in her books (pictured to the left). The following compilation hopes to give an overview, explaining the regional differences in the music called Western Swing. Prefer to watch? Click on the photo to the left. Western Swing is like a musical quilt whose pieces fit together and formed something new – a musical genre composed of a blend of American musical styles. What better place to collect the pieces than Texas, a cultural crossroads. In Texas, four major cultural influences set the stage for the development of Western Swing but in the beginning it all centered around the development of the Texas fiddle style.

Williams Page 3 The founder of the Gist family, of Maryland, was Christopher Gist, or Guest, who migrated from England and settled in Maryland on the south side of the Patapsco river in 1682, but removed in 1691 to Baltimore county. He married Edith Cromwell, of the family of the great Oliver Cromwell, lord protector of England. Their son, Richard (1684-1741), was the father of Christopher Gist, who is known in history as explorer of the West in 1750 and as guide of young George Washington in the Ohio river region in 1753 to ascertain the strength of the French. His journal of the expedition is the foundation of much of the early history of the west. Christopher Gist II married Sarah Howard in Maryland, where three sons were born to them: First—Richard Gist, Sept. 2, 1729, who was killed in the battle of King's Mountain, 1780.
