A News Letter for and About Our Members the Journey from String PO Box 14003 Mill Creek, WA 98082 Celebrating Founded Our 34th Year In 1983 Visit us on the web at: www.nwwsms.com Volume 34 Issue 11 A News Letter For and About Our Members November 2017 Preserving the music that is too country for Jazz and too jazz for Country (Our thanks to Jean A. Boyd for her extensive, published research into the America’s Western Swing Music music known as Western Swing, the Jazz of the Southwest. Dr. Boyd has The Journey from String Bands approved of the following compilation) to Swing Bands Editor’s Note: This year, Fred and I had the opportunity to take part in western swing events of the three western swing sister societies, the NWWSMS, the WSS, and the WSMSS. The similarities as well as the differences were striking - but a feeling of community and sense of belonging tied them all together. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to view String Bands to Swing Bands, from the NWWSMS’ 2016 festival, the script to the video segment is printed below. Dr. Boyd maps this connection out in her books (pictured to the left). The following compilation hopes to give an overview, explaining the regional differences in the music called Western Swing. Prefer to watch? Click on the photo to the left. Western Swing is like a musical quilt whose pieces fit together and formed something new – a musical genre composed of a blend of American musical styles. What better place to collect the pieces than Texas, a cultural crossroads. In Texas, four major cultural influences set the stage for the development of Western Swing but in the beginning it all centered around the development of the Texas fiddle style. “Carnegie Hall Concert with Buck Owens and His Buckaroos”—Buck Owens and His Buckaroos (1966) Added to the National Registry: 2013 Essay by Scott B. Bomar (guest post) * Original album Original label Buck Owens and His Buckaroos In the fall of 1965, Buck Owens was the biggest country star in the world. He was halfway through a string of sixteen consecutive #1 singles on the country chart in the industry-leading “Billboard” magazine, and had just been invited to appear at New York City’s prestigious Carnegie Hall. Already designated a National Historic Landmark, the esteemed venue had hosted Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Gershwin, Bernstein, and Ellington. Owens recognized the honor of being asked, but instructed his manager, Jack McFadden, to decline the offer. “When they first started talking about it, it scared me to death,” he admitted in a 1967 radio interview with Bill Thompson. Buck was worried the Manhattan audience wouldn’t be interested in his music, and he wanted to avoid the embarrassment of unsold tickets. McFadden pushed him to reconsider. When Ken Nelson, Owens’ producer at Capitol Records, suggested they record the performance and release it as his first live album, Buck finally conceded. Buck Owens’ journey to the top of the charts and the top of the bill at the most revered concert hall in the United States began in Sherman, Texas, where he was born Alvis Edgar Owens, Junior in 1929. By 1937, the Owens family was headed for a new life in California, but they wound up settling in Mesa, Arizona, when a broken trailer hitch derailed their plan.

  • Jesse Dayton – Mixtape Volume 1
Jesse Dayton – Mixtape Volume 1 “If you open your arms to the world, it’s amazing what will come back atcha,” drawls East Texas native, singer/songwriter/filmmaker/author Jesse Dayton, who has a bunch more homespun wisdoms where that came from. A veteran of more than 30 years as a musician, Dayton was discovered as a young teenager playing “a toilet dive” in his hometown of Beaumont by legendary club owner Clifford Antone, who booked him into his famed Austin venue, then immediately shifted him over to the honky-tonk Broken Spoke, where the likes of Willie Nelson, George Strait and Ernest Tubb have had residencies. “When I first got to Austin, everybody else sounded like Stevie Ray Vaughan, but I sounded more like Jerry Reed. I didn’t think I was cool, either, because this was before every punk sported that image of Johnny Cash flipping the rod.” Equally steeped in Texas/Louisiana blues, old-school country and punk-rock, Dayton is the music world’s best-kept secret, hiding in plain sight as a guitarist for Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Ryan Bingham and L.A. punk pioneers X, as well as touring alongside Social Distortion, the Supersuckers and John Doe. After releasing 11 studio albums and an EP as a solo artist, Dayton’s new album, Mixtape Volume 1, is a series of 10 cover songs he thoroughly makes his own, reinterpreting and revisiting them in a brand-new way. On the first track and single, Jackson Browne’s “Redneck Friend”, Dayton takes the song to a place where it would be eQually at home on the first two Eagles albums or as a Rolling Stones collaboration with Gram Parsons.

August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th.

A Vivaldi “Season” enjoys a new set of colors, plus a couple of pieces that will be done according to the composers’ directions, though not without some of the improv techniques that are always a part of bringing old music to life and give it an individual flavor.
