  • The Kinship Relations of Thai-Lao Communities Along Mekong River Banks: a Case of Mukdahan-Savannakhet Community and Recommendations for Improving Thai-Lao Relations*
Research Articles The kinship relations of Thai-Lao communities along Mekong River banks: a case of Mukdahan-Savannakhet community and recommendations for improving Thai-Lao Relations* Watunyu Jaiborisudhi1*, Wichian Intasi1 and Ampa Kaewkumkong1 1Institute of East Asian Studies, Thammasat University, Pathum Thani, 12121, Thailand. Abstract Background: The bilateral relations between Thailand and Laos were initially based on a good perception for a long time. It can be said that Thai policy towards relations with Laos was adhered to the old discourse, which believed that Thailand and Laos are Sister Countries, and thus presumed the close tie between them. While Thai myth believed that they were strong bilateral relations, Lao people, on the contrary, believed that the aforementioned discourse implied an insult of Thai people towards Laotian. Objective: 1. To study the cause of the problems concerning the bilateral relations between Thailand and Laos. 2. To study the relative advantage of the bilateral relations between Thailand and Laos. Results: The study of the comparison of the advantage and disadvantage between Thailand and Vietnam on the relationship with Lao showed that Thailand was relatively disadvantaged in comparison to Vietnam in all aspects. However, the Researcher has proposed the advantage that Thailand possesses over the bilateral relations between Thailand and Laos, namely, the kinship relations of the communities along both Mekong River banks included Mukdahan-Savannakhet community which was closely sustained. Discussion: This research is to study the causes of the bilateral relations problem, and to present the advantages over the improving of the bilateral relations between Thailand and Laos under the historical research and the concept of National interest.

  • And Border Area Management
Volume 13, Number 6, Pages 69 - 79 Trafficking in persons in the North-South, East-West Economic Corridors (EWEC-NSEC-SEC) and Border Area Management Jaturong Boonyarattanasoontorn Social Work and Social Welfare Faculty, Huachiew chalermprakiet University Abstract As well as facilitating land transportation among ASEAN countries, the formation of ASEAN Economic Community and the utilization of the North-South and East-West Economic Corridors has given rise to human trafficking rings. The routes established by ASEAN have been used for transporting trafficking victims. The research “Trafficking in persons in North-South and East-West Economic Corridors and Border Area Management” sheds light on the situation of trafficking in persons in Economic Corridors. Issues were found with varying degrees of severity depending on the local context of each corridor. Major loopholes can be found in natural passages and temporary border checkpoints which have been exploited by trafficking rings from neighboring countries to smuggle victims into Thailand. Travelers from Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam arriving at checkpoints are not aware of the definition and pattern of trafficking in persons and they do not think that they can become trafficking victims. Once they have become trafficking victims, they have no idea how to help themselves out of the situation they are in. Findings from this research are useful for developing recommendations for legal and policy reform. The findings can also be used for border area management, particularly the formation of the “Border Area Development Committee for Sustainable Solutions to Trafficking in Persons” to enhance the prevention and suppression of trafficking in persons.

  • Regional Development of the Golden and Emerald Triangle Areas: Thai Perspective
CHAPTER 6 Regional Development of the Golden and Emerald Triangle Areas: Thai Perspective Nucharee Supatn This chapter should be cited as: Supatn, Nucharee, 2012. “Regional Development of the Golden and Emerald Triangle Areas: Thai Perspective.” In Five Triangle Areas in The Greater Mekong Subregion, edited by Masami Ishida, BRC Research Report No.11, Bangkok Research Center, IDE- JETRO, Bangkok, Thailand. CHAPTER 6 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE GOLDEN AND EMERALD TRIANGLE AREAS: THAI PERSPECTIVES Nucharee Supatn INTRODUCTION Regarding international cooperation in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, two triangle areas of the three bordering countries also exist in Thailand. The first is known as the “Golden Triangle” of Myanmar, Lao PDR, and Thailand. It was known as the land of opium and the drug trade in a previous era. The second, the “Emerald Triangle,” includes areas of Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Thailand. In addition, there is also the “Quadrangle Area” of China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Thailand which is an extension of the Golden Triangle. Though there is no border between China and Thailand, there is cooperation in trading, drug and criminal control, and also the development of regional infrastructure, especially in the North-South Economic Corridor (NSEC) and the 4th Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge which is currently under construction. Figure 1 shows the location of the two triangles. The circled area indicates the Golden Triangle, which is located in the upper-north of Thailand, whereas the Emerald Triangle is in the northeastern region of the country. However, as these two triangles are located in different regions of Thailand with different characteristics and contexts, the discussions of each region are presented separately.
