Archived Document Corporate Services, University of Exeter Welcome to the Index of Coniferaes Foreword The University is fortunate in possessing a valuable collection of trees on its main estate. The trees are planted in the grounds of Streatham Hall which was presented in 1922 to the then University college of the South West by the late Alderman W. H. Reed of Exeter. The Arboretum was begun by the original owner of Streatham Hall, R. Thornton West, who employed the firm of Veitches of Exeter and London to plant a very remarkable collection of trees. The collection is being added to as suitable material becomes available and the development of the Estate is being so planned as not to destroy the existing trees. The present document deals with the Conifer species in the collection and gives brief notes which may be of interest to visitors. It makes no pretence of being more than a catalogue. The University welcomes interested visitors and a plan of the relevant portion of the Estate is given to indicate the location of the specimens. However, as insufficient members expressed interest in taking the boat trip, this had to be cancelled, and likewise therefore, the planned activities at Narooma. Plans for our next meeting have now changed and we will meet at ERBG staff meeting room at 10am for morning tea, followed by a presentation by Paul at 10.30am: "The plants and vegetation of Montague Island, seabird conservation, and the impacts of weeds and other human disturbance and activity". The history and heritage of Montague Island, including the light station, will also be weaved into the talk. Paul apologises to those who wanted to join the field trip on Montague Island, but with low numbers the economics of hiring the boat proved unviable. Following Paul’s presentation, we will conduct the Show and Tell session (please bring your garden plants in flower) and after lunch, open discussion, end of year notices, and a walk at gardens to see what has happened over the past 12 months. Members might consider dining at the Chefs Cap Café, recently opened in its new location by the lakeside. -

72 NATIVE PLANTS IN A FENDALTON GARDEN DEREK COOK AND WARWICK HARRIS Usually private gardens come and go with little record of their existence. Often their duration is short and determined by the period of care the gardener who created them is able to give to them. Through creating and caring for a garden, a gardener inevitably acquires knowledge of the plants in the garden and their requirements for adequate growth. While most gardeners are happy to show and talk to people about their gardens, few leave a written record of the knowledge they acquired about the plants they grew or attempted to grow in their garden. This is a record of plants of the garden of Derek Cook created at 27 Glandovey Road, Fendalton Christchurch. As described by Mary Lovell-Smith (2001) in The Press, it is a garden that was developed as a consequence of a passionate interest in native plants. The garden is a plant collector's garden. Consequently its form is determined by the objective to grow as many different species of native plant as possible, rather than a concern for decorative appearance. Through this approach information has been obtained about which native plants are most likely to succeed in a Christchurch garden. The first list (Table 1) prepared by Derek Cook recorded plants present in the garden in August 2000 that had survived "Christchurch frosts and dry nor'westers for 5-10 years." A list made in September 2001 recording acquisitions made since the list of August 2000 is given at the end of Table 1. -

Abstract Patterns of flammability across the vascular plant phylogeny, with special emphasis on the genus Dracophyllum by Xinglei Cui Fire has been part of the environment for the entire history of terrestrial plants and is a common disturbance agent in many ecosystems across the world. Fire has a significant role in influencing the structure, pattern and function of many ecosystems. Plant flammability, which is the ability of a plant to burn and sustain a flame, is an important driver of fire in terrestrial ecosystems and thus has a fundamental role in ecosystem dynamics and species evolution. However, the factors that have influenced the evolution of flammability remain unclear. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Species of the genus Rotylenchus are ecto- or semi-endo parasites and feed on roots of their host plants. In the study it was found that 50% species of Rotylenchus were monophagous and mostly on plants in the clade Rosids followed by monocots, Asterids and gymnosperms. In general, Rosids and Asterids combined parasitized more than 50% host species followed by monocots. Though food preference was species specific but by and large woody plants were preferred from very primitive families like Magnoliaceae and Lauraceae to representatives of advanced families. Woody plants like pines and others made a substantial contribution in the host range of Rotylenchus. Maximum number of Rotylenchus species harboured plants in families Poaceae (monocots), Rosaceae (Rosids) and Oleaceae (Asterids) followed by Fabaceae, Fagaceae, Asteraceae and Pinaceae. It is, therefore, suggested that agricultural crops should be grown far away from wild vegetation and forest plantations. INTRODUCTION Species of the genus Rotylenchus (Nematoda: Haplolaimidae) are migratory ectoparasites and browse on the surface of roots. The damage caused by them is usually limited to necrosis of penetrated cells (1). However, species with longer stylet penetrate to tissues more deeply and killing more cells and called as semi-endoparasites (2,3). The genus contains 97 nominal species which parasitize on a wide range of wild and cultivated plants worldwide (3). -
