We recommend sticking to your navigation system of choice. Nonetheless, here is a short description on how to get to the venue. From the north (e.g. direction from Hannover) From motorway A7 and change to A66 in the direction of Frankfurt / Hanau / Fulda-Süd at the three-leg-interchange Fulda. After ~ 25 km exit the motorway at Schlüchtern-Süd and proceed in the direction of Schlüchtern-Süd / Steinau-Ost (turn right). In the town of Steinau an der Straße turn left at the traffic lights to proceed in the direction of Jossa. After c. 10 km, turn left to stay in the direction of Jossa. In Jossa, turn right in the direction of Obersinn / Mittelsinn / Burgsinn. After passing these villages (c. 20 km), you will arrive in Rieneck, where you take the exit Rieneck-Nord and follow the map below. From the south/east (e.g. direction from Munich / Ulm / Nuremberg) From mortorway A7 in northward direction take the exit No.103 Kitzingen in the direction of Kitzingen / Biebelried and follow the B8 . If you are coming from motorway A3, take the exit for the interchange at Bibelried to change to A7 in the direction of Ulm / Rothenburg, but take the left lane to proceed to B8. After c. 12 km, take one of the two left lanes and continue in the direction of B27 / Marktheidenfeld / Fulda / Heidelberg / Stadtring-Nord. Continue for another c. 3 km and change onto B27. After 23 km change onto B26 and go for another c. 16 km. At the town Gemünden, follow B26 at the first roundabout, but take the first exit at the second roundabout. You will arrive in Rieneck after another c. 5 km. Take the exit Rieneck-Nord and follow the map below. By public transport There is a train station in Rieneck. We will try to organize a pick up service from the station, for those who travel with Deutsche Bahn. When anything that challenged the authority of the state – concepts based on enlightenment, immigration, or socialism – were deemed to be a threat to the status quo and immediately eliminated by way of legal restrictions. Once the façade of the Old World was completely severed following the Great War, nations in Europe and throughout the West started to revive various nineteenth century laws in an attempt to suppress the outbreak of radicalism that preceded the 1919 revolutions. What this dissertation offers is an extended understanding of how nineteenth century government policies toward radicalism fostered an environment of increased national security during Germany’s 1919 Spartacist Uprising and the 1919/1920 Palmer Raids in the United States. Using the French Revolution as a starting point, this study allows the reader the opportunity to put events like the 1848 revolutions, the rise of the First and Second Internationals, political fallouts, nineteenth century imperialism, nativism, Social Darwinism, and movements for self-government into a broader historical context.

    THE SELF-PERCEPTION OF CHRONIC PHYSICAL INCAPACITY AMONG THE LABOURING POOR. PAUPER NARRATIVES AND TERRITORIAL HOSPITALS IN EARLY MODERN RURAL GERMANY. BY LOUISE MARSHA GRAY A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of London. University College, London 2001 * 1W ) 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the experiences of the labouring poor who were suffering from chronic physical illnesses in the early modern period. Despite the popularity of institutional history among medical historians, the experiences of the sick poor themselves have hitherto been sorely neglected. Research into the motivation of the sick poor to petition for a place in a hospital to date has stemmed from a reliance upon administrative or statistical sources, such as patient lists. An over-reliance upon such documentation omits an awareness of the 'voice of the poor', and of their experiences of the realities of living with a chronic ailment. Research focusing upon the early modern period has been largely silent with regards to the specific ways in which a prospective patient viewed a hospital, and to the point in a sick person's life in which they would apply for admission into such an institution. This thesis hopes to rectif,r such a bias. Research for this thesis has centred on surviving pauper petitions, written by and on behalf of the rural labouring poor who sought admission into two territorial hospitals in Hesse, Germany. This study will examine the establishment of these hospitals at the onset of the Reformation, and will chart their history throughout the early modern period. Bureaucratic and administrative documentation will be contrasted to the pauper petitions to gain a wider and more nuanced view of the place of these hospitals within society.

At Brown, she first worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of German Studies, before entering the Ph.D. program of Brown’s History Department in 2006. She received an A.M. in History from Brown in 2007 and passed her preliminary examinations with distinction in 2008 in her major field Modern German History (with Omer Bartov) and her minor fields Modern European History (with Deborah Cohen) and Modern Russian History (with Ethan Pollock.) At Brown, she has worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Departments of History and German Studies, taught several courses in Brown’s Summer Program and an undergraduate seminar on the history Weimar Germany in the History Department.
