Стаття присвячена аналізу спрямованості ціннісних орієнтацій депортованих лемків, у контексті їх впливу на етнічну самосвідомість. За результа- тами емпіричного дослідження встановлено, що в групі депортованих лемків ієрархія цінностей представлена рівною кількістю позитивно та негативно значимих цінностей. П’ятірку позитивно значимих цін- ностей склали: Універсалізм, Доброта, Безпека, Конформність та Тра- диція. П’ятірку цінностей із негативною значимістю для лемків, що були депортовані з території Лемківщини у 1945-1946 роках та зараз проживають на території України, склали: Самостійність, Досягнення, Гедонізм, Влада та Стимуляція. Визначено, що негативне значення цін- ностей Стимуляція та Влада значно переважає показник направленості позитивно значимих цінностей, що може свідчити про витіснення да- них цінностей і конфліктний зміст ціннісних орієнтацій в групі депор- тортованих лемків. Виявлено психологічний механізм функціонування цінностей, який забезпечує перетворення етнічних норм, зразків і мо- делей поведінки в індивідуалізований досвід етнічної групи та формує особливості етнічної самосвідомості лемків. Зокрема було визначено, що цінності Універсалізм, Доброта та Традиції включені до найбіль- шої кількості кореляційних зв’язків, що дає підстави розглядати їх як інструментальні цінності в групі депортованих лемків. Було виявлено багаторівневий конфлікт між мотиваційною спрямованістю цінності із відсутньою тривогою та цінностями на основі тривоги, а також між цінностями, що належать до Особистого фокусу та Соціального фокусу. Визначено, що цінності Соціального фокусу виявилися адаптивними до нових соціально-політичних умов, та отримали подальше закріплення © Y.V. Особенности ценностных ориентаций лемков депортированных с территории Лемковщины на протяжении 1944– 1946 годов. Статья посвящена анализу направленности ценностных ориентаций депортированных лемков, в контексте их влияния на этническое самосознание. По результатам эмпирического исследо- вания установлено, что в группе депортированных лемков иерархия ценностей представлена равным количеством позитивно и негативно значимых ценностей. Пятёрку значимых ценностей составили: Уни- версализм, Доброта, Безопасность, Конформность и Традиция. Пятёрку ценностей с отрицательной значимостью для лемков, которые были депортированы с территории Лемковщины в 1945-1946 годах и сейчас проживают на территории Украины, составили: Самостоятельность, Достижения, Гедонизм, Власть и Стимуляция. Определено, что отри- цательное значение ценностей Стимуляция и Власть значительно пре- восходит показатель направленности положительно значимых цен- ностей, что может свидетельствовать о вытеснении данных ценностей и конфликт ценностей в группе депортированных лемков. Выявлен психологический механизм функционирования ценностей, обеспечи- вающий преобразование этнических норм, образцов и моделей пове- дения в индивидуализированный опыт этнической группы, и форми- рующий особенности этнического самосознания лемков. В частности было установлено, что ценности Универсализм, Доброта и Традиции включены в наибольшее количество корреляционных связей, что даёт основания рассматривать их как инструментальные ценности в группе депортированных лемков. Было обнаружено многоуровневый конфликт между мотивационной направленностью ценности с отсутствующей тревогой и ценностями на основе тревоги, а также между ценностями, принадлежащими к Личному фокусу и Социальному фокусу. Определе- но, что ценности Социального фокуса оказались адаптивными к новым социально-политическим условиям, и получили дальнейшее закрепле- ние в структуре самосознания депортированных лемков. Проведенное исследование раскрывает влияние депортации на систему ценностных ориентаций лемковской этнической группы. Direction of value orientations is an integral dimension of psychological analysis of groups in social psychology. In this regard, the scientific interest represents the study of ethnic groups that suffered from deportation, which had a negative impact on their ethnic self-awareness. One of these peoples is Lemkos, who lived on territory of Lemkivshchyna and had been deported during the 1944-1946 years. Meanwhile there is a lack amount of ethnopsychological research of the Lemko ethnic group in the Ukrainian scientific space. Considering the humanis- tic tendencies and focus on the European model of development of democratic society in Ukraine, conducting comparative and cross- cultural researches is important in psychological, social, and politi- cal aspects. The specificity of this research requires coverage of historical events that were crucial for Lemkos ethnic group. According to the agreements [12] on population exchange between Polish Committee of National Liberation (Polski Komitet Wyzwolenia Narodowego, PKWN) and Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Українською Радянською Соціалістичною Республікою, УРСР), during 1944- 1946 years, from Poland were deported about 95 thousands of Lemkos [1, p. 245], and during «Operation Vistula» in 1947 to the north of Poland — were deported more than 30-35 thousands of Lemkos [5]. According to the latest Ukrainian Census (2001) in Ukraine 672 representatives of the Lemko ethnic group officially live [3, p. 101], meanwhile in Poland during Polish census of 2002 exclusively Lemko identity has declared by 5863 people [11, p. 137], in 2011 – 5612 people [11, p. 123]. Comparison of amount of deported Lemkos to the latest census, evidently reveals the difference between the number of representatives of the Lemko ethnic group, which were resettled on the territory of Ukraine, and declared Lemko ethnicity: for 55 years from 95 thousand people [1, p. 245] of Lemko ethnic group remained only 0.7% representatives, which gives reasons to speak of it as an ethnic group that disappears. Lack amount of ethnopsychological research of the Lemko ethnic group in the Ukrainian scientific space forms a request to research social psychological peculiarities of Lemkos ethnic self-awareness, primarily in Ukraine. It is important search and analysis of internal and external social psychological fac- tors of ethnic self-awareness of Lemkos that currently living in Ukraine. Methodological foundation of research has made «emic» approach, which aims to profound study of features of one ethnic group [10]. Having previ- ously defined, that the Lemkos of Ukraine include those who were deported, and those who were born in Ukraine. In total on the territory of Ukraine there were deported: • the first generation of ancestors (~1835-1885 years of births) – senile people who all of their conscious life lived in Lemkivshchyna; • the second generation of ancestors (~1860-1910 years of births) – adults who were born and raised on the territory of Lemkivshchyna; I generation of now living people, (1923-1942 years of births) – children who were born on the territory of Lemkivshchyna during the Second Polish Republic (II Rzeczpospolita) in villages: Zlockie (Злоцьке) and Szczawnik (Щавник) in Nowy Sącz County (Powiat nowosądecki) – Kraków Voivodeship (Województwo krakowskie); in villages: Besko (Босько), Daliowa (Далева), in Sanok County (Powiat sanocki), Myscowa (Мисцева), in Krosno County (Powiat krośnieński), Rudawka (Рудавка), in Przemyśl County (Powiat przemyski) – Lwow Voivodeship (Województwo lwowskie). And they were later resettled by the first wave of deportation from the Lemkivshchyna

Budapest: Central European University Press, 2015. 550 pp. Paul Robert Magocsi has authored numerous books on the history of Central and Eastern Europe, Ukraine, and particularly the region he calls Carpathian Rus´. In his new book, With their Backs to the Mountains: A History of Carpathian Rus´ and Carpatho-Rusyns, he understands Carpathian Rus´ as a territory inhabited predominantly by a people whom some consider part of the Ukrainian nation, others a distinct ethnographic group within it, while still others, including Magocsi, an entirely separate nation. The belief that Rusyns are an independent nation with a history the roots of which stretch back to the Middle Ages can be seen as the central thesis of the book, which is, like most works that have the character of a textbook, more descriptive than analytical. The territory dominated by this group ranges on both sides of Carpathians from eastern Slovakia to the Ukrainian–Romanian borderland.

The traditional elements of physical culture of the Lemko community, especially fun and games have been presented on the basis of the general characteristics of this ethnic group, and the entire history of the presence of the Lemkos in Poland. Folk fun and games, as a form of physical activity are presented in the broad sense of physical and cultural system and the Lemko community located within the cultural system. The need for such a study is due to the fact that there are no other ethnological or cultural anthropology studies on physical culture of this ethnic group. This article explores three aspects of self-representation of the Lemko community - group membership, victimhood and “speakerhood” – and examines how these representations are contested on a number of levels. 1. INTRODUCTION. Poland, contrary to popular discourses both within and outside the country, is historically a multilingual and multiethnic state, comprising just under half a million citizens who identify as a member of a minority group, or 1.23% of the total popu- lation of Poland (Łodzinski´ 2005: 94–95). These minorities include Silesians, Germans, Belorussians, Ukrainians, Roma, Lemkos, Lithuanians, Kashubs, Russians, Slovaks, Jews, Tatars, Czechs, Armenians, and Karaims (Jasiewicz 2011: 738). Other groups also exist, though lack official recognition, such as the inhabitants of Wilamowice, a town in the south of Poland where speakers of a distinct Germanic variety are still to be found, and which is undergoing revitalization efforts at a grassroots level (Hornsby, in press). Expressions of minority culture were severely hampered by the pre-1989 socialist regime in Poland, and after this date many minorities found new cultural and ideological spaces in which to signal their differences from the prevailing majority culture.

RUSYNS OF THE CARPATHIANS: COMPETING AGENDAS OF IDENTITY Alexandra Wiktorek, B.A. Thesis Adviser: Marjorie Mandelstam Balzer, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This thesis examines the cultural revival and nation-building movement of the Rusyns, an East Slavic ethnic group whose homeland along the Carpathians straddles the border between the former Soviet Union and the European Union. While in the 19th century and again after World War I, Rusyns launched national movements, they never gained statehood as did other neighboring nations. Instead, Rusyns remain divided among several European states. During communist rule, they were officially classified as Ukrainians, their closest ethnic neighbors. After the Revolutions of 1989 and the subsequent demise of the Soviet Union, however, the Rusyns have emerged as a cohesive group recognized officially as a national minority in all the countries where they live except for Ukraine. The new Rusyn national movement brought about the revival of an identity once considered irretrievably outdated by reviving Rusyn language, engaging with the nations around them, and creating international organizations to unite all Rusyns. This question is explored here through the lens of liberal nationalism theory, especially as formulated by Yael Tamir, who argues that nations are defined culturally and that a stateless people may achieve self-determination when they live in a state whose institutions provide recognition and space for them to develop unhindered.

Indexes. PLN 25,00, paper. his book by Bohdan Halczak, a professor at the University of Zielona T Góra, aspires to the ranks of monographs that deal comprehensively with the histories of peoples. It joins a series of publications, well known in Poland, that have been put out by Wydawnictwo Ossolineum (Wrocław), Wydawnictwo Trio (Warsaw), and others. While detailed studies are characterized by elaborate scholarly apparatuses, monographs encompassing the entire histories of specific peoples or ethnic groups possess limited factual information and contain generalizing statements. Halczak’s monograph is a general overview; its goal is the popular presentation of the history of the Lemkos from the dawn of history to the present day (15). The book has six main chapters, each concluding with a summary; the structure is akin to that of a university textbook. The author, in discussing terminology and the ethnogenesis of the Lemkos, considers the theories and definitions in the existing literature and clearly declares that the Lemkos belong to the Ukrainian people. He discusses broadly the interchangeablity of the terms Rusyns and Ukrainians in Polish historical literature, referring to this phenomenon as “terminological ‘dualism’” (“‘dualizm’ nazewniczy”; my trans.; 12). He correctly notes that such dual terminology is not used in naming Germans, Italians, or Slovaks. It is a pity, however, that he does not continue this polemic and go on to explain why the Rusyns decided to change their self-designation to Ukrainians.

    Inhabitants of the Village of Strubowiska Who Were Evicted to Ternopil After years of searching and wondering who remained in the village of Strubowiska to be evicted after World War II, I discovered the remarkable publication of Dr. Yaroslava Galyk who has documented the evictions of Lemkos. Below is a brief description of her work published in an article by Michael Buryk and Justin Houser1. As the Soviet regime took over southeastern Poland and western Ukraine in 1944, it implemented a plan to ethnically homogenize these regions and to eradicate widespread Ukrainian patriotic sentiment. They drew a border based on the World War I-era Curzon Line, dividing the new Polish People’s Republic from the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. All Ukrainians and Poles living on the “wrong” side of the line were slated for deportation to the other side. Despite glowing propaganda about life in the Soviet Union, initially few Ukrainians relocated. The authorities then implemented increasingly violent tactics to coerce resettlement (Operation Rzeszow). Nearly 500,000 Ukrainians were thus resettled from Poland to the Soviet Union in 1944-1946, including tens of thousands of Lemkos. When the Soviet Union refused to take more, the remaining 150,000 Ukrainians were resettled to the northern and western territories of Poland in Akcja Wisła in 1947. “The Memory Books of Lemkivshchyna 1944-1946” (Knyha Pamiati Lemkivshchyny 1944-1946), authored by Dr. Yaroslava Galyk and published with the support of the Lemko Research Foundation in the U.S.A. (LRF) and LRF’s president, Andriy Khomyk, contain the names of those Lemkos who were deported to Ukraine between 1944 and 1946.

However, it is important to emphasize that the majority of works are devoted to the study of ethno-cultural identity of Lemkos. Comprehensive analysis of historiography on Lemkos ethnographic research was made by known researcher M. Mushynka1. Attempts to summa- rize Polish historiographical framework on Lemkos study issues were made by Polish researcher A. Zheba2. Taking into consideration the extensive historiographical research base, we should single out certain periods, which largely determined the nature of re- searches, but also had effect on the value of scientific publications.I n particular, these are works of domestic and foreign researchers of the second half of XIX — the 30s of the XX century, the study of the Soviet period, the works of the Diaspora representatives and contemporary studies of Ukrainian, Polish and Slovak scholars.

    COMPLETE Galicia Introduction & Towns of Deszno & Wola Pietrusza GALICIA – INTRODUCTION Galicia1 Adapted from comments by: Alex Allister Shvartsman The term Galicia was pressed into service by the Austrians to denote the lands taken from Poland during the 3 partitions 1775, 93 and 95. The Poles call this area Malopolska or Little Poland (actually it originally stood for Junior Poland). The Eastern part was known as the Rus' or Ruthenian Palatinate. The name Galicia was derived from Rusyn/Ukrainian name Halychina. This is the area that is roughly the Eastern Malopolska that was a Rus' principality in roughly 1200-1400 AD (Halychina-Wolyn'). The name of the principality is in turn derived from the name of its capital city -- Halych. The coat of arms of Halych and of Halychina is: Argent, a bird sable crowned and taloned or. The name of the particular bird in the local tongue is "halka". It might be the case that the arms are canting, but, again, this suggests the local Slavic derivation of the name. Halychina also has a different coat of arms that are the arms of its second (historically) capital, Lwow/Lviv/Leopolis/Lemberg: Azure, a lion rampant or. The Ruthenian Palatinate of Poland included the Galician land from roughly 1400(??) to the second partition of Poland in 1793 when the area was annexed to Austria-Hungary. Note that the colours of the contemporary Ukrainian flag, per fess azure and or, come from the arms of Ruthenia. These come from a republication in ca. 1850 of the ca. 1790 work by Kasper Niesecki, Corona Polska (if memory serves me right).
