Testing Gold Platinum Silver.Qxp
PROCEDURES FOR TESTING GOLD, PLATINUM AND SILVER To test for the karat value of gold, platinum and silver, you will need the following materials and tools: • Black acid testing stone that is washed thoroughly with water prior to each test. • Acids. • Gold testing needles with gold tips - used for comparison with test pieces. Testing for 10K, 12K, 14K Scratch the gold piece to be tested on the stone. Next to this position, scratch the appropriate needle (10, 12 or 14K). Place a drop of the appropriate acid on the stone where the gold was rubbed off. If the gold is the same karat or higher, the color of the scratch mark for the gold piece will appear the same as the mark from the needle. If that gold piece is a lower karat, the scratched deposit will become fainter and eventually disappear. Testing for 18K Scratch the test piece on the stone and apply 18K acid. Any gold that is less than 18K will disappear in less than 30 seconds. Gold that remains on the stone is 18K or higher. Testing for 20K and 24K Scratch the gold piece on the stone. Next, scratch any item of know karat (coin or needle) on the stone. Apply one drop of acid to area. The material that starts to disappear has the lower karat. Testing for Platinum Scratch the test item on the stone and apply one drop of acid to the application on the stone. If the material is platinum, it should keep its white, bright color. White Gold The same procedure for platinum can be used for 18K white gold. -
White by Law---Haney Lopez (Abridged Version)
White by Law The Legal Construction of Race Revised and Updated 10th Anniversary Edition Ian Haney Lόpez NEW YORK UNIVERSITY PRESS New York and London (2006) 1│White Lines In its first words on the subject of citizenship, Congress in 1790 restricted naturalization to “white persons.” Though the requirements for naturalization changed frequently thereafter, this racial prerequisite to citizenship endured for over a century and a half, remaining in force until 1952. From the earliest years of this country until just a generation ago, being a “white person” was a condition for acquiring citizenship. Whether one was “white” however, was often no easy question. As immigration reached record highs at the turn of this century, countless people found themselves arguing their racial identity in order to naturalize. From 1907, when the federal government began collecting data on naturalization, until 1920, over one million people gained citizenship under the racially restrictive naturalization laws. Many more sought to naturalize and were rejected. Naturalization rarely involved formal court proceedings and therefore usually generated few if any written records beyond the simple decision. However, a number of cases construing the “white person” prerequisite reached the highest state and federal judicial circles, and two were argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in the early 1920s. These cases produced illuminating published decisions that document the efforts of would-be citizens from around the world to establish their Whiteness at law. Applicants from Hawaii, China, Japan, Burma, and the Philippines, as well as all mixed- race applicants, failed in their arguments. Conversely, courts ruled that applicants from Mexico and Armenia were “white,” but vacillated over the Whiteness of petitioners from Syria, India, and Arabia. -

GLOSSARY of PLATING TERMS Acid Gold: a Mildly Acidic Process That Is Used When Plating from 7 to 200 Mils of Gold
GLOSSARY OF PLATING TERMS Acid gold: A mildly acidic process that is used when plating from 7 to 200 mils of gold. The deposits are usually 23kt purity, and it is not usually used as the final finish. Antique: A process which involves the application of a dark top coating over bronze or silver. This coating, either plated or painted, is partially removed to expose some of the underlying metal. Anti-tarnish: A protective coating that provides minimal tarnish protection for a low cost. Barrel plating: A type of mass finishing that takes place in a barrel or tub. Barrel plating is usually requested for very small pieces where pricing must be kept low. Black nickel: A bright or matte, dark plating process that is used to highlight antique finishes. Or, when used as a final color it will range from dark grey to light black. A bright black nickel will yield the darkest color. Bright finish: A high luster, smooth finish. CASS testing: The Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray test is the same as the Neutral Salt Spray (NSS) test, except it is accelerated, with typical time cycles being 8 and 24 hours. Cold nickel: A non-brightened nickel bath which replicates the original finish, that is, bright areas remain bright and dull areas remain dull. Color: Describes the final top coating (flash) which could be white, silver, 14kt gold (Hamilton), 18kt gold, or 24kt gold (English gold). See "gold flash" and "cyanide gold." Copper: An excellent undercoat in the plating process. Copper provides good conductivity and forms an excellent protective barrier between the base metal and the plate. -

“The White/Black Educational Gap, Stalled Progress, and the Long-Term Consequences of the Emergence of Crack Cocaine Markets” William N. Evans Craig Garthwaite Department of Economics Kellogg School of Management University of Notre Dame Northwestern University 437 Flanner Hall 2001 Sheridan Road Notre Dame, IN 46556 Evanston, IL 60208 vmail: (574) 631 7039 vmail: (202) 746 0990 email: [email protected] Email: [email protected] Timothy J. Moore Department of Economics George Washington University 2115 G Street, NW Washington, DC 20052 vmail: (301) 442 1785 email: [email protected] Abstract February 2015 We propose the rise of crack cocaine markets as an explanation for the end to the convergence in black-white educational outcomes in the US that began in the mid-1980s. After constructing a measure to date the arrival of crack markets in cities and states, we show large increases in murder rates after these dates. Black high school completion rates also declined and we estimate that factors associated with crack markets and contemporaneous increases in incarceration rates can account for between 37 and 73 percent of the fall in black male high school completion rates. We argue that the primary mechanism is reduced educational investments in response to decreased returns to schooling.
