Revival Addresses is a com- pilation of 40 sermons he preached at rallies around the world. If one is daunted by the sheer volume of the mes- sages, "The Greatest Sentence Ever Written" is a good place to start. It focuses on 1 John 4:8, "God is love." This simple sentence inspires some of Torrey©s most powerful messages of hope and love for the unsaved. THREE FIRES.............................. 253 3 INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION REQUESTS have come from many quarters for the publication of some of the sermons which God has been pleased to so greatly use in Japan, China, Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, India, England, and Scotland. This volume is published in response to this request. The author hopes that the sermons may be used as greatly in their printed form as they have been when spoken. The sermons when delivered, as here published, were taken down in shorthand, but have been carefully revised by the author. Each one of them has many sacred memories connected with it. When one of these sermons was delivered through an inter- preter in a Japanese city, eighty-seven Japanese came forward and declared publicly their acceptance of Christ. After the delivery of another in Shanghai, a large number of Chinese men and women walked out from their places among their heathen companions and publicly professed their acceptance of Christ. On some occasions in Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand, hundreds of men and women came forward and with their own lips publicly con- fessed their acceptance of Christ as their Saviour and their Lord. Reports of some of these sermons have been given in religious and secular papers, but these reports have been neces- sarily fragmentary and inaccurate, as they have never been revised by the author. I have abundant proof that even these unsatisfactory reports have done good, but it seems desirable that a full and accurate report of what I have said be given to the public. 4 REVIVAL ADDRESSES REVIVAL ADDRESSES REVIVAL ADDRESSES 5 I. GOD I. GOD I. GOD “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God”—Psalm xiv. 1. I have taken, or rather God has given me, for my text tonight a very short one. I do not think you ever heard a sermon from a shorter text. I will not tell you where to find the text. It occurs several hundred times in the Bible. Indeed, open your Bible at random almost anywhere and you will find my text somewhere on the page. It consists of but one word; but it would take all eternity to exhaust its meaning, and then it will not be exhausted. It is “God”—a word the height and depth and length and breadth of whose meaning no philo- sopher has ever fully apprehended. 6 I. GOD IS I. GOD IS I. GOD IS The first thing the Bible teaches us about God is that God is. “God is”—two short words. Tremendous significance! “God is.” If that simple truth gets hold of your mind and heart it will move and mold your entire life. It will determine your science, it will determine your philosophy, it will determine your daily life, it will determine your eternity. “God is.” The psalmist tells us in Psalm xiv.—“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.” Please note where he says it—“in his heart.” That is, he says there is no God simply because he does not wish to believe that there is a God. Now, there is a God, and a man that denies a fact simply because he does not wish to believe it is a fool. There is abundant proof of the existence of God, so abundant that no man can sit down and consider the proof thoroughly and candidly without acknowledging the existence of God. Nature proves the existence of God. All through Nature there are marks of creative intelligence. Everywhere in Nature you find order, symmetry, law. You can study Nature in the minute, or you can study Nature in the vast, it makes no difference; everywhere you find the marks of intelligence and creative design. You may take your microscope and turn it down upon the minutest forms of life; everywhere there is adaptation to end, to purpose, to design.

    Lili Sarnyai Figuring “Sleeping Beauty”: Metamorphosis of a Literary and Cultural Trope in European Fairy Tales and Medicine, c. 1350-1700 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2016 Birkbeck, University of London 1 This is to certify that all the work presented in this thesis is my own. 2 Abstract This thesis takes an interdisciplinary approach to a recurrent cultural trope: the figure of the sleeping beauty. Sleeping beauties are young women—paradigms of femininity, paragons of virtue and physical perfection—who lose consciousness and become comatose and catatonic, for prolonged periods. In this unnatural state, these female bodies remain intact: materially incorrupt, aesthetically unblemished. Thus can the body of the sleeping beauty be defined as an enigma and a paradox: a nexus of competing and unanswered questions, uniquely worthy of investigation. This thesis examines the metamorphoses of the figure of the sleeping beauty in literature and medicine between c.1350 and 1700 in order to interrogate the enduring aesthetic and epistemological fascination that she exercises in different contexts: her potency to entrance, her capacity to charm, in both literary and philosophical realms. The widespread presence of the sleeping beauty in literature and art, as well as in the broader social sphere, over the centuries, indicates the figure’s important and ongoing cultural role. Central to this role is the figure’s dual nature and functionality. On the one hand, conceptualized as allegories, sleeping beauties act as receptacles for a complex matrix of patriarchal fears, desires and beliefs about the female body in general, and the virgin and maternal bodies in particular.

    THE GREAT REVIVAL OF 1863 THE EFFECTS UPON LEE’S ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA Troy D. Harman Reverend J. William Jones, a chaplain in Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and a witness to the significant religious activity within that army during the American Civil War, stated, But any history of that army which omits an account of the wonderful influence of religion upon it -- which fails to tell how the courage, discipline, and morale of the whole was influenced by the humble piety and evangelical zeal of many of its officers and men -- would be incomplete and unsatisfactory.1 His words summarize the general mood experienced by the soldiers of Lee’s Army during the “Great Revival.” There were two sweeping and prolonged revivals that the Army of Northern Virginia experienced. The first occurred along the Rappahannock River in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area, from September 1862 until May 1863. The revivals reappeared more forcefully a second time from August 1863 (after the Gettysburg Campaign) until May 1864 along the Rapidan River near Orange Court House, Virginia. In these two extended revivals, which often marked the time between campaigns for the Confederate soldier, large crowds of soldiers gathered repeatedly, impressive numbers of professions to the Christian faith were counted, demands for tracts and testaments increased, and the individual soldier-converts exhibited a changed lifestyle. As setbacks beset Lee’s Army in 1863, and news of Confederate defeats in other theaters arrived, the Army of Northern Virginia became more introspective, humble, and repentive of perceived sins. Many of the soldiers even became convinced that God would intervene on their army’s behalf, but only when the Confederate nation purged its bad elements.

    Stephen King * The Mist I. The Coming of the Storm. This is what happened. On the night that the worst heat wave in northern New England history finally broke-the night of July 19-the entire western Maine region was lashed with the most vicious thunderstorms I have ever seen. We lived on Long Lake, and we saw the first of the storms beating its way across the water toward us just before dark. For an hour before, the air had been utterly still. The American flag that my father put up on our boathouse in 1936 lay limp against its pole. Not even its hem fluttered. The heat was like a solid thing, and it seemed as deep as sullen quarry-water. That afternoon the three of us had gone swimming, but the water was no relief unless you went out deep. Neither Steffy nor I wanted to go deep because Billy couldn't. Billy is five. We ate a cold supper at five-thirty, picking listlessly at ham sandwiches and potato salad out on the deck that faces the lake. Nobody seemed to want anything but Pepsi, which was in a steel bucket of ice cubes. After supper Billy went out back to play on his monkey bars for a while. Steff and I sat without talking much, smoking and looking across the sullen flat mirror of the lake to Harrison on the far side. A few powerboats droned back and forth. The evergreens over there looked dusty and beaten. In the west, great purple thunderheads were slowly building up, massing like an army.

    The FBI and the Bag Lady by Faye Girsh An original play in honor of Sharlotte Hydorn, known as The Bag Lady. She made Exit Bags and was visited by the FBI. This is in memory of her courage and dedication to the right to choose to die with dignity. CAST A COUPLE, the Walkers SHAR, tall, attractive, warm, vivacious 91 year old woman RAJA (PACO), foreign-looking 57 year old man, slight accent FBI AGENT(S), tough, armed, uniformed, authoritative JUDGE, compassionate but deliberate, firm BAILIFF, business like LAWYER, on Shar’s side but quiet REPORTERS ACT ONE Scene I (A couple, the Walkers, on their deck, in La Jolla.) HE: Nice evening. Shall we have our drinks outside. SHE: Good idea. Then you can tell me how your visit went with Howie and Greta. HE: (Brings wine and glasses. Pours) I’m anxious to talk to you about that. It was depressing to see what’s happening to Howie — and how hard it is for Greta. But it made me think that we should start talking about these things. SHE: What things? HE: Sickness, dying, losing one’s mind. Howie is getting more confused. It’s hard for Greta to take him anywhere. They saw a doctor last week who thought he had some form of early dementia and advised more tests. Greta feels she can’t leave him alone, and even when he’s home he often leaves and wanders off. SHE: They’re such a wonderful, devoted couple — this is a real tragedy for both of them.
