As New Brunswickers, this isn’t new. You’ve been doing this for decades now. In fact, Thank you for your continued support. your contributions to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation now total more than $91 Million since our Sincerely, inception!

For your own personal and special reasons, you have chosen to make a difference in the healthcare provided right here in New Brunswick. And what a tremendous difference you have made. Through your generosity, Steve Titus, Chair Jeff McAloon, CEO the Foundation was able to grant close to $10 Million to local, regional and provincial health initiatives this past year. This impressive total represents investments in Innovative Technology, Impactful Research, Scholarships and Professional Development Opportunities, Thoughtful Patient Care Initiatives and a record setting year of granting for Mental Health Programs across the Province.

You have trusted our organization as the steward of your philanthropy and for that we are incredibly grateful and mindful of our responsibility to you, our valued donors. Our Board and staff work diligently on your behalf to uncover the most urgent and innovative ideas that will benefit physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals and, as a result, the thousands of patients they treat every day. 2016 | 2017 Annual Report 3

Partners in helping people be healthy

Good health lies at the heart of our daily quality of life- it is what all New Brunswickers want for themselves and those they love. It is through working with key stakeholders, like the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, that we are positioned to best serve our population.

Upon becoming active in my role in January of this year, I was eager to not only familiarize myself with the work of the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation but to continue building on the strong partnership. The philanthropic support that is so generously provided by the Foundation’s donors is a vital part of delivering exceptional patient care in the greater Saint John area as well as across the province through specialized provincial programs.

Thank you for your incredible support-we are so grateful for the work you make possible through the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, and we look forward to our continued partnership.

For the third year in a row, thanks to the support of donors like you and the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, over 185 Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) from the Saint John Region met once again for two days of networking and professional development focused on developing their skills to cope with the increasing and ever changing demands of providing care.

Nursing and the Future: Skills for a Changing Landscape was made possible through generous donations to the Foundation’s Education pillar. Conference attendees were met with stories of challenge and inspiration, and left feeling uplifted by the discussions and shared experiences had with those in their field. They took with them new tools with which to approach their jobs, providing patients with inspired care, every day.

The immense value of your generosity, as provided to our nurses at this conference through personal and professional development, cannot be overstated. As the heart of our hospital community, opportunities like the nursing conference raise the bar for all nurses, and serve as a reminder of their value and importance at the Saint John Regional Hospital, and in New Brunswick healthcare.

As part of our successful 2016 Pediatric GIVE campaign, we were pleased to add 11 sleeper chairs to both the Pediatric Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick Charity Golf Classic was also pleased to put their fundraising efforts in support of the purchase of sleeper chairs.

These much-needed chairs will give the parents of children receiving care and treatment at the SJRH the opportunity to rest during what is often a very difficult time.

Valerie Cobham-Richards, Nurse Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, believes the chairs will bring a much higher level of patient comfort to those staying, but not receiving treatment, at the hospital.

The chairs will bring a higher level of comfort to parents who want to stay close to their fragile babies. This is a very hard, emotional, but usually happy time for parents but it is also a very tiring time. They are worried and excited about their babies and so sleep is not always a first priority. These chairs will give them a chance to lie down comfortably, close to their babies, to recharge their batteries. We are so grateful to those who helped fund these chairs for our parents.

Photopheresis patient Ashley Hunter, 22, is one such patient. In 2012 she was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, and after a blood transfusion, was diagnosed with graft-versus-host disease. For her, the answer was photopheresis treatment, which rapidly spins patients’ blood through a centrifuge, separating the red and white blood cells, allowing for a drug called Uvidex to be injected into the white blood cells.

When my Halifax doctors told me they were offering photopheresis in Saint John, we thought, ‘this might be a saviour.’ For me and everyone else who is on the treatment, it is a blessing. I can’t say enough. Whether they know it or not, the people who donated this machine are saving lives.

Like legions of Saint John residents I’ve been drawn, over the years, into the hospital system; as a patient myself, as a mother, and for the most trying period of my life, as a daughter caring for two sick and ultimately dying parents. You can’t truly appreciate how complicated, responsive, and, yes, emotionally draining the healthcare system is, not only for the patients, but for the patient caregivers -- the nurses and doctors -- until you are inside the system, day in and day out trying to do all you can for your loved ones. I felt it was important to give back, albeit in a small way, to say thank you to so many health care professionals and the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation who went above and beyond their daily ‘job descriptions’. They worked to make my parents lives the best they could be under incredibly trying circumstances. Any type of fundraising for this organization is time, effort and volunteer hours, well spent.
