As such, can be understood in part as a response to what W.H. Auden described as “the modern problem”: a vacuum of meaning caused by the absence of inherited presuppositions and metanarratives that imposed coherence on the flow of experience. At the same time, the dissertation contends that— paradoxically—mythic thinkers’ response to, and critique of, modernity was itself a modern project insofar as it took place within, and depended upon, fundamental institutions, features, and tenets of modernity. Mythic thinking was defined by the belief that myths—timeless rather than time-bound explanatory narratives dealing with ultimate questions—were indispensable frameworks for interpreting experience, and essential tools for coping with and criticizing modernity. Throughout the period 1900 to 1980, it took the form of works of literature, art, philosophy, and theology designed to show that ancient myths had revelatory power for modern life, and that modernity sometimes required creation of new mythic narratives. -

Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada i Abstract Powys' novels are deeply rooted in a sense of place; much of their conflict develops through the effect of a particular locality upon the characters who live there or come there. This thesis demonstrates how Powys' sense of place is com• pounded of both a feeling for the physical landscape, and an awareness of the historical and mythical traditions which form its human past. Powys finds correspondences between the scenery and legends of a locality and the psychological states of his personae, and thus uses landscape and myth for symbolic purposes. The interaction of myth and landscape largely creates the characteristic atmosphere of the five novels studied here. -

Eliot and Weston: The Mythical Method of The Waste Land Jonathan Ullyot CHAPTER DRAFT “As a matter of fact I believe that the ‘Waste Land’ is really the very heart of our problem; a rightful appreciation of its position and significance will place us in possession of the clue which will lead us safely through the most bewildering mazes of the fully developed tale.” (Jessie Weston, From Ritual to Romance, 60) In 1922, Horace Liveright, T. S. Eliot’s American publisher, suggested that Eliot write explanatory notes to his new poem, The Waste Land, in order to increase the page count for the limited edition. Once Eliot wrote the notes, however, he considered them an integral part of his poem.1 Eliot prefaced the notes with a generous acknowledgement to Jessie Weston’s study of the Grail legend, From Ritual to Romance (1920). The passage has been the source of much debate among readers and scholars. Not only the title, but the plan and a good deal of the incidental symbolism of the poem were suggested by Miss Jessie L. Weston’s book on the Grail legend: From Ritual to Romance (Cambridge). -

Excalibur (film) Excalibur is a 1981 American epic fantasy film directed, produced, and co-written Excalibur by John Boorman that retells the legend ofKing Arthur and the knights of the Round Table, based on the 15th-century Arthurian romance Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory. It stars Nigel Terry as Arthur, Nicol Williamson as Merlin, Nicholas Clay as Lancelot, Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere, Helen Mirren as Morgana, Liam Neeson as Gawain, Gabriel Byrne as Uther Pendragon, Corin Redgrave as Cornwall, and Patrick Stewart as Leondegrance. The film is named after the legendary sword of King Arthur that features prominently in Arthurian literature. Gaumer III Director Second Reader Received by: Dr. Arthur Lane Director, Committee on Honors Sir Gawain of the Court of King Arthur: A Study in the Metamorphosis of a Hero To readers of the Arthurian tales the mention of King Arthur brings to mind a myriad of other names such as Lancelot, Galahad, Perceval, Gareth, and Gawain; heroes whose exploits comprise the substance of the legend of Arthur. Much like the twelve peers of Charlemagne, the knights of King Arthur's court and heroic individuals whose legends are interwoven and crossed into a single tapestry by association with the ruler of a mighty realm. In fact, critics have speculated that the Arthurian saga is very simple in its essential form. Certainly it is the tales of the heroes who have been attached to the story of Arthur that form the bulk of :he legend familiar to the reader of 1 Malory. Of these ancillary heroes, there is little doubt that the most popular, especially in the hearts of the English, was he who is known as v~alwein, Gwalmachmai, Gauvain, or simply Gawain. In fact, there are more tales dealing with Gawain than with Arthur in English literature. As R.W. Ackerman points out, "in no fewer than seven of the 2 [English] romances is he [Gawain] indisputably the hero." Yet the importance of Gawain in the legends is not fully realized by those who read only Malory or the derivatives of his work. -

The Fisher King, the Grail and the Goddess: Ted Hughes’S Aquatic Myths
The Fisher King, the Grail and the Goddess: Ted Hughes’s aquatic myths Yvonne Reddick, University of Warwick Abstract: This paper presents some research for my PhD thesis on fluvial landscapes in the works of Ted Hughes and Alice Oswald. The thesis as a whole aims to explore the relationship between myths of the genius loci in the English poetic canon, and the eco-poets’ mythology of riverine landscapes in crisis. In this paper, I set out to explore the role of the Grail and Fisher King, favoured figures of T. S. Eliot, in Ted Hughes’s river-poetry. The Grail is an object of medieval legend, but this paper contends that Hughes follows the example of Jessie Weston in making it fit into a family of more ancient myths. The fertility myths which Weston views as giving rise to the Grail legend are associated with the aquatic goddess who haunts both Ted Hughes’ poetry and his critical work Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being. I use a combination of methods – contextualization of Hughes’s work with reference to Modernist texts, close analysis of the poetry, and comparisons to the poet’s letters and critical works, in order to uncover the myths behind what is often a very modern, environmentally engaged text. I hypothesize that Hughes’s use of myth gives his poetry a universal, canonical tenor, with its persona as nameless Fisher King and its muse as an abstract Goddess. However, I conclude that at times his use of myth becomes self- mythologizing. Contrary to Lacoue-Labarthe’s proposal that art and culture begin at the point at which myth ends, Ted Hughes’s poetry is spawned by myth.
