“Contemporary Issues of Literary Criticism”. Symposium, held in Ilia Chavchavadze National library, was opened by acting director of Shota Rusatveli Institute of Georgian Literature, professor Irma Ratiani. The audience was welcomed by Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Bela Tsipuria and the Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, George Khubua. At the plenary session presentations were made by professor of the college of Judea and Samaria Ruban Enuk and the professor of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University Mariam Chkhartishvili. From April 3 to April 5 work of the sections of The International Symposium was presented simultaneously in Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature (in concert hall and meeting room) as well as in Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, I building(auditorium103) 5 sections operated at the Symposium: Medieval studies; Form, narrative, beauty; Contemporary literary processes; Intercultural communications; Myth, ritual, symbol; Following topics were discussed: “Division of the history of literature” and “Postmodernism”. 79 reporters participated in the symposium from different Georgian Universities (Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Akaki Tsereteli Kutaisi State University, Sokhumi branch of Ivane Javakhishvili State University, Ilia Chavchavadze State University, Georgian Technical University , Sighnaghi branch of Tbilisi State University, Black Sea University and Metekhi University) and Scientific-Research Institutes(The Shota Rustaveli University of Georgian Literature, Giorgi Tsereteli Institute of Oriental science, Korneli Kekelidze Institute of Manuskripts) as well as from Jerusalem, St.Petersburg, Baku, Yerevan, The US,(several Universities), Warsaw and Grand Universities. The closing ceremony of symposium was held at the concert hall of Shota Rustaveli University of Georgian Literature. 1st International Symposium programmes and theses were published. (In Georgian, English and Russian). Georgian Institute of Literature intends to publish Georgian materials of the presentations in two volumes. The English version of the presentations will be printed in the internet magazine “LITINFO”. Special cultural programme was organized for foreign participants. They visited museums, Tbilisi and Mtskheta sights. Concert was held in Tbilisi Youth Palace specially for them. According to the organizational committee this symposium will become annual. .

MOUNTAINS OF DISCONTENT: GEORGIAN ALPINISM AND THE LIMITS OF SOVIET EQUALITY, 1923-1955 BY BENJAMIN BAMBERGER DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2019 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Diane Koenker, Chair Professor Mark Steinberg Associate Professor John Randolph Professor Antoinette Burton ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the development of an independent mountaineering community in Georgia and its relationship with the Soviet center from the early 1920s until the immediate post-Stalin period. In 1923, a group of Georgian students led by the mathematician Giorgi Nikoladze and the local guide Iagor Kazalikashvili summited the Kazbegi peak, an imposing 5000-meter high mountain located along the Georgian military highway. This ascent served as the foundation for the creation of a nationally oriented climbing community that focused on summiting Georgian peaks through cooperation with local peoples in mountainous regions. Over the next decade, Georgian alpinists formed their own Geographic Society and made numerous summits on Georgian mountains, making the Georgian alpinist community the only non-Russian organization of alpinists in the Soviet Union at this time. As Soviet tourism centralized and became more ideologically rigid in the early 1930s, Georgian climbers came under pressure from Moscow to conform to the new norms of proletarian touring. The centralization of Soviet mountaineering meant that over the next three decades, Georgian alpinists were repeatedly denied autonomy over where and when to climb and were criticized for their insistence on developing alpinism among the mountainous populations of Georgia instead of workers in industrial centers.

Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (Presented by Academy Member Gucha Kvaratskhelia) ABSTRACT. Giorgi Tsereteli (1842-1900) is one of the great Georgian writers of the 1860s. His theoretical views on literature and the reasons and circumstances which made Georgian writers and public figures of the 1860s called “Generation of the Sixties” gather around the periodical “Saqartvelos Moambe” (Georgian News) are being described in the paper. The second half of the 19th century is remarkable with the activities of great Giorgian public figures and writers, such as Ilia Chavchavadze, Akaki Tsereteli, Niko Nikoladze, Giorgi Tsereteli, Sergei Meskhi and others. Giorgi Tsereteli participated in solving of all the topical problems of that time concerning national-liberation movement of Georgia. The formation of the writer’s literary views is greatly indebted to the aesthetic teaching of European enlighteners, in particular, Lessing. He is a founder and active supporter of all scientific innovations, and his works became the basis for new research initiatives in descriptive and comparative linguistics, mathematical linguistics and typology, philosophy of language and linguoculturology, etc. The creative biography of the scholar should be assessed in the broader context of the history of civilized humanity, because, as the cultural and scientific trends of the era show, the Georgian intellectual channel once again turned out to be one of the advocates of cardinal processes in the world. It is in this historical and cultural context that the place and role of such a scholar and thinker as academician Thomas Gamkrelidze should be considered. Academician T. Gamkrelidze made an optimal synthesis of the best achievements of three important scientific schools – Kartvelology, Oriental studies and Indo-European studies. Notes on the Persian Gospel Manuscript in Georgian Script Helen Giunashvili Research Associate, Giorgi Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies, Ilia State University Tamar Abuladze Head, Department of Manuscript Preservation and Registration, Korneli Kekelidze Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts Introduction In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, during the Safavid dynasty’s reign in Iran (1501–1736), long-term Iranian-Georgian relations intensified, which corresponded to existing political realities. Helen Giunashvili completed her doctoral thesis, “Personal Verbal Forms in Parthian and Early Middle Persian,” at the Institute of Oriental Studies (Institute of Oriental Manuscripts) at Saint Petersburg. Her scholarly assignments have included positions at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of Tehran, the Academy of Persian Language and Literature, the French Institute of Iranian Studies, the Sorbonne, and the National Centre for Scientific Researches. Dr. Giunashvili is currently a research associate at the Giorgi Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies at Ilia State University. She has published numerous scientific works dealing with different issues of Iranian-Georgian cultural-linguistic relations. Tamar Abuladze is the head of the Department of Manuscript Preservation and Registration at the Korneli Kekelidze Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts. Her research involves codicological and philological study of medieval Georgian and Oriental scientific manuscripts; studies of Georgian, Persian, and Georgian-Persian historic documents; and Georgian-Persian cultural relations. She has written several books and catalogues, including as author Translating Activities of Vakhtang VI (Bagrationi) (Metsniereba, 1990); Illuminated Historical Documents in the Depositories of Georgia (Favorit Print, 2011); and as coauthor Georgian Manuscript Book, 5th-19th Centuries (Korneli Kekelidze Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts, 2014); and Astronomical Manuscripts in Georgia (Ilia State University Press, 2015).

Contemporary Issues of Literary Criticism”
Symposium Review * II International Symposium “Contemporary Issues of Literary Criticism” On December 16-18, 2008 Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature organized the Second International Symposium “Contemporary Issues of Literary Criticism”. The Symposium was scheduled to take place in September, but due to the recent tragic events that occurred in Georgia, the scientific forum had to be postponed. The thematic scientific conference “Sulkhan- Saba Orbeliani and Georgian European Tradition. Literature, Culture, Consciousness” was conducted within the frameworks of the symposium. This event was organized with the support of the Foundation of Georgian Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences (Rustaveli Foundation). (The review of the above mentioned conference is available on this website). The symposium was opened on December 16, 2008 at the meeting room of Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature. The opening ceremony was attended by the following invited guests: Nodar Surguladze, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Tinatin Bochorishvili, Director of the Foundation for Georgian Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences (Rustaveli Foundation), Iago Kalandadze, Head of the Department of Science, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. Professor Irma Ratiani, the Director of Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, opened the symposium and welcomed the audience. Rusudan Tsanava, Senior Scientific Member of Staff made the presentation at the Plenary Session.
