I first conceptualized this project as an undergraduate student at Spelman College, a place of sentimental value that I will always consider home. At Spelman, I encountered a vibrant and rigorous community of scholars who nurtured my passion for Black feminist theory and the history of the African Diaspora. My mentors M. Bahati Kuumba and Dalila de Sousa Sheppard offered me life lessons and provided a solid foundation for studying the experiences of women of African descent. I am also indebted to professors v Ayoka Chenzira, Gloria Wade Gayles, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Estelle Finley, Kathleen Phillips-Lewis, and Sheila Walker. I dedicate this dissertation to them. viii Constructing Afro-Cuban Womanhood: Race, Gender, and Citizenship in Republican-Era Cuba, 1902-1958 Takkara Keosha Brunson, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2011 Supervisor: Frank Guridy This dissertation explores continuities and transformations in the construction of Afro- Cuban womanhood in Cuba between 1902 and 1958. A dynamic and evolving process, the construction of Afro-Cuban womanhood encompassed the formal and informal practices that multiple individuals—from lawmakers and professionals to intellectuals and activists to workers and their families—established and challenged through public debates and personal interactions in order to negotiate evolving systems of power. The dissertation argues that Afro-Cuban women were integral to the formation of a modern Cuban identity. Studies of pre-revolutionary Cuba dichotomize race and gender in their analyses of citizenship and national identity formation. As such, they devote insufficient attention to the role of Afro-Cuban women in engendering social transformations. The dissertation’s chapters—on patriarchal discourses of racial progress, photographic representations, la mujer negra (the black woman), and feminist, communist, and labor movements—probe how patriarchy and assumptions of black racial inferiority simultaneously informed discourses of citizenship within

    TTTTTTT Mirada crítica a la historiografía cubana en torno a la marginalidad del negro en el Ejército Libertador (1868-1898) Ismael Sarmiento Ramírez TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT R E S U M E N En esta mirada a la historiografía cubana en torno a la marginalidad del negro en el Ejército Libertador, se analizan las obras más significativas que abordan esta problemática en Cuba. Se pone de manifiesto que hoy, después de 115 años del inicio de la gesta independentista, sigue sin existir un corpus completo de este fenómeno que recoja el comportamiento social durante toda la contienda bélica (1868-1898), y que esté centrado en el Ejército insurrecto. Además, el estudio advierte que la marginalidad, la discriminación y el racismo -entre las herencias más marcadas de la esclavitud y de la cultura que a partir de ésta se engendra en Cuba- fue un problema que, aunque también afectó a determinados líderes de la raza negra, mayoritariamente perjudicó a los negros insurrectos, más desposeídos, y es por esto que fue más difícil de detectar, ejemplificar y hasta llegar a considerar como un mal que convive de forma perenne en las filas de los revolucionarios cubanos. Para, por último, recomendar: ¿cómo encauzar el análisis de esta problemática, todavía vigente en la población de raza negra en Cuba, entrelazando los diferentes eslabones sociales que la unen?     CERS Working Paper 2016 Anna-Claire Chappell Racism in Cuba Introduction The term racialisation can be interpreted differently with potential for extensive scope and application. However generally speaking it describes the way in which ideas of race and ethnicity are understood and conceptualised, often through binary terms as a means of categorisation and division (Murji and Solomos 2005, 2). Although the United Nations officially denies the use of skin colour and physical racial distinctions to differentiate between people, racialisation continues to affect aspects of every day life economically, politically and socially, both at an individual level and within international systems and institutions as a whole (Goldberg 2005,101). This essay seeks to characterise the processes of racialisation in Cuba, with specific focus on four areas: post-racial discourse, socialism as opposed to Cuban imperial pasts and the culture of Santeria, and the arts. Cuba proves an interesting country to look at and is distinct from other national experiences of racialisation, having had fifty years under the anti- racist agenda of the revolutionary state (Law 2012, 1). The first section of this agenda addresses post-racial discourse as a strategy to counter racism and has characterised President Fidel Castro’s action on racialisation in Cuba since the revolution succeeded in 1959 to more recently. However, despite the acknowledgement that racism persists, the state continues to take little responsibility to combat racism. State objectives do not deal with racial discrimination directly, but rather focus on improving education and job opportunities. Fidel Castro continues to blame Cuba’s imperial past for its racism, whilst critics would argue that socialism itself also nurtures racist ideologies.

Informed by Goffman’s framing theory as well as suggestions of agenda-setting and priming, this qualitative study analyzes 19 propaganda posters for communications of encoded messages.
