Camrin Wilcoxon became the 2nd from CHS to make it to state

By JORDAN KROEGER [email protected]

Camrin Wilcoxon has already left his mark after just one year. Not many tennis players from Columbia have made it to the biggest stage — just one in fact. But Wilcoxon changed all that this season in his freshman campaign, becoming the sec- ond Tiger ever to qualify for the state tournament. Although he ran into a sea- soned senior in the Class 3A state quarterfinals, falling to Winter Haven’s Bryce Goff in straight sets (6-1, 6-2), Wilcoxon sur- prised many in his first season at Columbia. Even himself. Wilcoxon posted an 8-2 record and won a District 3-3A title, defeating Robert E. Lee’s Terry Thomas to avenge an earlier loss in the year. His historic season is why he’s the Lake City Reporter’s Tennis Player of the Year. “At the beginning of the season I didn’t really know what high school tennis was going to look like,” Wilcoxon said. “I had played in some other tournaments but I didn’t really know what to expect. But going through the season I played a lot of seniors who were stronger and more experienced but it’s who wants it more so I just had to fight. “I was surprised I got through districts. It was really surprising and then I got to state. From the beginning of the year I was told that I was going to get beat by a lot of players this year so I just really surprised myself.” Wilcoxon was Columbia’s No. 1 singles player from the get- go this season. Columbia coach Tom Moore was impressed with Wilcoxon’s dedication and knowl- edge of the game too, but it didn’t come as too much of a shock — Moore remembers watching Wilcoxon practice at Youngs Park prior to entering high school. Moore recalls Wilcoxon’s potential back then. Seeing it come to fruition in just one sea- son was an enjoyable sight. “He has the strokes and the ability the play all the games but to learn to play the game against your opponent is what he learned during the season,” Moore said. “He learned to adapt to his opposition because the MANDI TILLOTSON SLOAN/Special to the Reporter WILCOXON continued on 6B Camrin Wilcoxon is the LCR’s Tennis Player of the Year.
