    Chapter 2: Historical and Geographical Background of the Study Area 2.1. Historical Background: Bifurcation of the erstwhile district West Dinajpur on 1st April in the year 1992 gave birth of Uttar Dinajpur District, a narrow strip of land between Bihar and Bangladesh extending from north to south, bounded to the north by district Darjeeling, on the east by Bangladesh, in the south by the district of Dakshin Dinajpur and in the West by the district of Malda, also by Kishanganj, Katihar & Purnea Districts of Bihar. The district is subdivided into two subdivisions viz. Raiganj and Islampur. In 1947, Dinajpur district was divided into namely Dinajpur (now in Bangladesh) and West Dinajpur (jointly Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur districts). It is said that according to the name of King Danuj @ Dinaj, the erstwhile Dinajpur district was named. 2.2. Location of the study area: Uttar Dinajpur district lies within the coordinate of latitude 25°11' N to 26°49' N and longitude 87°49'E to 90°00'E occupying an area of 3142 km² enclosed by Panchagarh, Thakurgaon and Dinajpur district of Bangladesh in the east, Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar districts of Bihar on the west, Darjeeling district and Jalpaiguri district on the north and Malda district and Dakshin Dinajpur district on the south. 2.3. Administrative division: The district has been subdivided into two sub-divisions viz. Raiganj and Islampur, 110 km (68 mi) apart from each other and comprising mainly of Bengali speaking population while Islampur has a large number of Urdu and Hindi speaking people. There are 4 Municipalities, 9 Blocks and 97 Panchayats covering 3263 inhabited villages.

ABSTRACT Kulik river of barind tract of Indo-Bangladesh has been experienced significant channel migration and avulsion. Frequent shifting of channel invites instability in life and livelihood pattern of the people concerned astride. So, it is very necessary the migratory behaviour of the channel, its zone of wandering and its consequences on land loss and land building. This study mainly intends to find out migration behaviour of the channel since 1951 to 2014, delineation of channel migration zone and assessing land building and land loss in very recent times. For capturing migration behaviour, indices like dynamic channel shifting index, index of channel shifting asymmetry and lateral stability index have been used. Historical channel migration zone has been identified overlying all the previous courses and land loss and build has been detected comparing channel courses of two phases. From the analysis, it is found that channel course is frequently migrates over time and reach specific variation does exist. Total area under historical channel migration zone is 82.679787sq.km; average width of this zone is 1.34km. Both area and width of the lower reaches are usually greater than upper reaches. Both land building and land loss have been running simultaneously but net land loss is 66.46% which is of great concern to the river bank dwellers.

    Available on line at: p ISSN: 2354-5844 http://ijwem.unlam.ac.id/index.php/ijwem e ISSN: 2477-5223 Spatial Association of Wetlands over Physical Variants in Barind Tract of West Bengal, India Rajib Tarani Das and Swades Pal University of Gour Banga, Malda, West Bengal, India ABSTRACT Barind tract of west Bengal is an uplifted old alluvial plain area where only <1 percent area is covered by major wetland. The present paper concentrates on general understanding of wetland association with different geographical settings like geological, geomorphological lithological structures and altitudinal gradations. Another purpose of the research is to find proximity of wetland to river in the study area. To find associationship of wetland with various topographical setting, simple overlay technique is applied such as wetland overlay on geological map, morphological map, and relief map etc. Buffer analysis within 2 km radius along the major has been drawn to show wetland proximity to river. Detail investigation reveals that geological and morphological structures do not have deep influence on wetland formation and their distribution is not biased in any particular favourable sub-region. But altitudinal control on wetland distribution is noticeable. Maximum wetlands are concentrated in low altitudes. Similarly, about 40% wetland is found within 2 km width from major rivers which shows good proximity of wetland to river. An irregular distribution of wetland is found throughout the region because of multi parametric influence on it. In recent decades wetlands in Barind tract has been undergoing into rapid loss. Continuous encroachment of agricultural field and newly built-up area to wetland are considered as main causes of wetland loss in Barind tract.

It has emerged as the biggest environmental concern as well as threats to the livelihood of the people. It is serious threat to human security and national economy also. The recent instances of displacement across the country met with vehement resistance bears testimony to the peoples struggle and keenness to protect environment and their livelihoods.
