NEW YORK, N.Y., August 23, 2013 – The American Institute of Architects New York Chapter and the Center for Architecture have announced new and expanded programs for the third annual edition of Archtober, the official Architecture and Design Month. Record attendance and involvement are projected for the growing festival, with more than 150 curated programs. The full calendar of offerings is available at www.archtober.org/calendar. Taking place during October, the annual month-long festival of architecture includes films, lectures, family activities, programs, exhibitions and more. “The many participating organizations aim to raise awareness of the important role of design in our city and globally,” says Jill N. Lerner, FAIA, 2013 president of AIA New York and principal of architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. “Building on the first two years, Archtober 2013 will shine a spotlight on what makes New York great: its unparalleled architecture, outstanding design professionals, and global influence.” With 31 days of events, tours and exhibits in more than 50 venues, Archtober includes programs at the Center for Architecture, including a new exhibition opening October 1 on American architects behind the biggest building projects in Asia, called Practical Utopias. The ! 11 West !New York, NY 10019!www.moma.org!(212) 708-9400 Cut 'n' Paste: From Architectural Assemblage to Collage City, is on view at the Museum of Modern art July 10–December 1, 2013. The ethos of collage shapes every aspect of contemporary culture, from the glut of signs and images to the many layers of digital information to the art of sampling. This installation revisits early uses of collage to trace its evolution as both an aesthetic technique central to architectural representation and a cultural practice of layering, juxtaposition, and remix that configures the city. Opening with the seamless digital collages that dominate contemporary architectural practice, Cut ‘n’ Paste pairs the early photo-collages of Mies van der Rohe with avant-garde experiments in photomontage, graphic design, and film. Architectural thinkers Colin Rowe and Fred Koetter’s Collage City (1978), an urban manifesto for the medium, provides a backdrop through which to reframe contemporary uses. As an architectural tool, this wide-ranging medium mixes high and popular references and offers a dynamic, inventive connection to cultural context. Organized by Pedro Gadanho, Curator, and Phoebe Springstubb, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Architecture and Design.

Mark Manders' distinctive multi-disciplinary practice encompasses installation, sculpture, drawing, and projected imagery. With carefully constructed assemblages of furniture, human and animal figures, and the ephemera of daily life, Manders’ enigmatic installations reflect an ongoing interest in creating a metaphorical self-portrait. To create his work, he fabricates each individual element in the studio, recreating everyday objects that, while familiar, are stripped of real-world references. As part of his working process, Manders “tests a work” by imagining it in a supermarket “to see if it can survive there, without being labeled as an artwork.” Manders’ talk will focus on his interest in public space and the dialogue between between life and art. This talk is part of a series entitled Square Pegs, Round Holes: From White Cube to Public Sphere. Public Art Fund Talks at The New School are organized by Public Art Fund in collaboration with the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School.
