Summer in NYC: 101+ Free NYC Summer 2012 Concerts June 25, 2012 Now that the summer is officially here, I am hard at work compiling recommendations for (primarily) free summer outings. Initially, I was going to do a post regarding my top 8 favorite free family-friendly NYC Summer concerts. I like to make sure that I don’t miss anything, so I compiled a comprehensive list of choices first. When I did this in an Excel sheet, it ended up being over 101 different free NYC summer concerts being held this summer! In any event, I decided to do two posts – this one (that is comprehensive) and another one (with my top 8 family-friendly picks) later in the week. FYI: Several of the picks on this list are series with multiple concerts, so I batched them together. Also, this comprehensive list includes several concerts that will primarily appeal to adults. (We moms can enjoy them with our husbands, partners and other adult friends.) Enjoy! Brooklyn -8th Annual Afropunk Festival August 25th – 26th Held in Commodore Barry Park, it features a diverse mix of performers including Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae and more. -Albee Square Summer Concerts for Kids – Downtown Brooklyn Thursdays (May 17th to August 23rd) at 10am Kid-friendly performances. -BAM R&B Festival at MetroTech Thursdays (June 7th through August 9th) at noon There are still 7 more acts in this outdoor concert series featuring R&B legends and emerging stars. -Bargemusic Presents: “Music In Motion” Every Saturday afternoon (June to August) at 3pm There are Q & A sessions with the musicians after these one hour neighborhood family concert performances. -

Natural Resources Group Forest Restoration Team Planting Report Fall 2010 Dear Parkie, The Natural Resources Group (NRG) moved closer to our PlaNYC goal of planting over 400,000 trees throughout the city. This past fall we planted over 30,000 trees in 2 properties in all five boroughs. Our current tally stands at 222,188. Furthermore, we planted over 7,000 shrubs and over 4,000 herbaceous plants Our primary goal is to create and restore multi-story forests, bringing back the ecological richness of our region. Healthy multi-story forests provide cleaner air, cleaner water, and increased biodiversity. NRG again hosted the Million Trees volunteer day. Volunteers and Parks’ staff planted 21,806 trees altogether. Without volunteers and the support of the Agency, and our institutional and community partners, NRG would not reach its planting goals. Below is a summary of fall 2010. • Containerized trees planted by the Forest Restoration Team: 27,130 (2009: 26,139) • Containerized trees planted through contractors: 4,332 (2009: 9,652) • Balled & burlapped trees planted through contractors: 58 (2009: 267) • Containerized shrubs planted by the Forest Restoration Team: 5,701 (2009: 4,626) • Containerized shrubs planted through contractors: 1,492 (2009: 0) • Herbaceous plugs planted by the Forest Restoration Team: 4,540 (2009: 18,528) • Hosted 11 volunteer events with a total of 341 volunteers (2009: 32, 468) Sincerely, Tim Wenskus Deputy Director Natural Resources Group Total Plants Planted Trees 31,520 Shrubs 7,193 Herbaceous 4,540 Grand Total 43,253 -

Three years ago, the Art Commission called for a multi-agency effort to change the paradigm of the public building process, and build the landmarks of tomorrow. Today, I am pleased to report that, under the leadership of the Department of Design and Construction, the Design + Construction Excellence (D+CE) initiative has seen its most successful year yet. Since our last report, the initiative has continued to elevate design and construction standards and helped to produce thoughtful, creative projects in every borough. The new Office of Emergency Management headquarters in Brooklyn and the Queens Botanical Garden have achieved top level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and stand as vivid examples of what we can accomplish with bold thinking, and a commitment to meeting the biggest challenges of our time. Adopting the spirit of PlaNYC—our vision for a greener, greater New York—the D+CE will continue to ensure that our metropolis remains habitable and hospitable as it continues to grow and evolve. Thank you to everyone involved in the initiative for the support and contributions that remain critical to our success. "The creation of El Museo is one of the moments where history started to change," said the Mayor as he presented an official proclamation from the City. This was only one of the surprises in a Gala evening that honored Ella Fontanals-Cisneros, Craig Robins, and El Museo's founding director, artist Raphael Montañez Ortiz and raised in excess of $1.2 million. El Museo board chair Maria Eugenia Maury opened the evening with spirited remarks invoking Latina activist Dolores Huerta who said, "Walk the streets with us into history. Get off the sidewalk." The evening was MC'd by WNBC Correspondent Lynda Baquero with nearly 500 guests dancing in black tie. The redesigned map should be practical and able to be used in the real world. My choice on the New York State Park is the Central Park in Manhatten New York. I Chose Central Park because of my own experience. As a first time visitor in New York last year, I visited Central Park with my cousin who has been living in NewYork for seven years. While I was doing my research, I did not find any map for first-time visitors from the central park official website. If I were on my own while I first visited Central Park, I would not be able to know where to begin my visit. I am sure that the other first-time visitors would have the same problem. These are the reasons that my map is designed for first-time visitors who have a limited amount of time. In my map, I featured several top attractions in and around the park. I also included some top-rated restaurants around and inside the park since Knowing where to consume good food is essential during visiting. -
