1. Top Facts

Bayer Leverkusen have won two of their last three competitive matches against Bayern, but the side won the most recent Bundesliga encounter 4-2 at the BayArena 28 days ago.

Bayern München have progressed in five of their six DFB-Pokal ties with Leverkusen. The only success for Bayer 04 was a 4-2 home win in Düsseldorf in the 2008/09 quarterfinals.

Leverkusen have reached the DFB-Pokal final for the fourth time, and for the first time in 11 years (1-0 loss to Bremen). Their sole success came in 1993 when Ulf Kirsten scored the only goal of the game against the Hertha Berlin reserves. That was Die Werkself’s last piece of silverware.

Bayern are in the final of the DFB-Pokal for the 24th time, which is a competition record alongside their 19 titles. It’s FCB’s third straight final appearance.

Leverkusen have scored in each of their last 19 DFB-Pokal matches, while Bayern have netted in their last 22.

Thomas Müller could play in his eighth DFB-Pokal final, equalling the competition record held by Franck Ribéry.

Manuel Neuer has kept 32 clean sheets in the DFB-Pokal and could now equal Oliver Kahn’s competition record of 33 for a goalkeeper.

Robert Lewandowski is the top goalscorer in DFB-Pokal final history with six goals. By means of comparison, Leverkusen as a club have scored half as many in three final appearances (3).

Hansi Flick beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 in the 2003/04 round of 16 when in charge of then third-tier Hoffenheim.

Every Dutch coach to reach the final of the DFB-Pokal has won the trophy. Will now follow in the footsteps of (1983 with Köln), (2001 and 2002 with Schalke) and (2010 with Bayern)?

Latest final in 46 years

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 DFB-Pokal final was postponed from 23rd May to 4th July. It’s the latest final since 1974, when the squad had begun their World Cup training camp early and the DFB decided to hold the final at the start of the next season following the tournament. It meant that final was held on 17th August as beat Hamburger SV 3-1 in extra-time.

This season’s final comes 330 days after the competition began on 9th August 2019.

Seventh in the Bundesliga goes into the Europa League

The team that wins the DFB-Pokal is awarded a place in the group stage of the Europa League, but when the winner has already secured a European spot via another method, such as this year through the Bundesliga, that berth is given back to the league, meaning seventh place will feature in the continental competition.

Yet more extra-time

There have been 15 matches in this DFB-Pokal campaign that have gone to extra-time, which is already more than the whole of last season (11). The last time there were more was in 2016/17 (21).

Ten of those games went to penalty shootouts, which is four more than the last two seasons combined (6).

Lots of red and yellow cards

Referees have handed out an average of 4.2 yellow cards per game in the DFB-Pokal this season, which is substantially more than last year (3.4).

A total of ten players have been sent off in the cup in 2019/20, of which six came in the first round, one each in the second and last 16, and two in the quarterfinals. There were only six red cards in the entire competition last season.

Best goals haul for 30 years

There have been 239 goals scored across the 62 DFB-Pokal matches this season (excluding shootouts) at an average of 3.9 per game, which is the same rate as last year. The last DFB-Pokal campaign with a greater goals per game average was 1988/89 (4.0).

However, there were just six goals scored in the two semi-final ties (3 per game), which was the fewest since 2015/16 when only five goals were scored.

3. Analysis

Clear favourites on paper

Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FC Bayern München meet for the first time in the DFB-Pokal final on 4th July. While this is Leverkusen’s first final since 2009 as they look for a second Pokal title, Bayern are looking to lift the trophy for the 20th time and extend their position as record winners.

Leverkusen with supposedly better Pokal campaign

While history may not be on Leverkusen’s side, their performances in the DFB-Pokal this season bode well. They are the competition’s top scorers and have conceded half as many goals as Bayern on their way to the final.

Season comparison in the DFB-Pokal Bayer 04 Leverkusen Team FC Bayern München 13 Goals scored 12 3 Goals conceded 6 2 Clean sheets 1 71% Possession 69% 88% Pass completion 87%

However, it shouldn’t be ignored that Bayern have faced Bundesliga opposition in the last three rounds, while Leverkusen have only played against two top-flight teams (promoted sides Union Berlin and Paderborn) and have played the three supposedly strongest teams at home.

The road to Berlin Bayer 04 Leverkusen Round FC Bayern München Alemannia Aachen (4-1 A) First FC Energie Cottbus (3-1 A) SC Paderborn 07 (1-0 H) Second VfL Bochum 1848 (2-1 A) VfB Stuttgart (2-1 H) Round of 16 TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (4-3 H) 1. Leverkusen have made it to Berlin without the need for extra-time or penalties. They also did that when they won the cup in 1993, which in fact needed six rounds to reach the final.

‘Neverkusen’ dreaming of first title in 27 years

Bayer Leverkusen have reached the DFB-Pokal final for the fourth time in their history and the first since 2009. The following is a summary of their finals:

➢ 1993: Leverkusen won their only DFB-Pokal to date by beating the Hertha Berlin reserves 1-0 thanks to Ulf Kirsten’s goal in the 77th minute. Their coach at the time was Dragoslav Stepanovic.

➢ 2002: Leverkusen were beaten 4-2 by Schalke.

➢ 2009: Mesut Özil scored the only goal of the game as Bremen dashed Leverkusen’s dreams. It was current Hertha boss ’s final match in charge of Die Werkself.

As well as losing their most recent two DFB-Pokal finals, Leverkusen also came up short against Real Madrid in the 2002 Champions League final in Glasgow (2-1). That was the year the club finished runners-up in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League to receive the unfortunate nickname of ‘Neverkusen’. Parent company Bayer AG actually went on to trademark the self-mocking German term ‘Vizekusen’.

Bayern regulars in Berlin – will they defend their double?

FC Bayern München have reached the final of the DFB-Pokal for the third straight year, equalling their club record which they last achieved from 2012 to 2014. This year, the Munich club are looking to defend the double they won last season under Niko Kovac.

Hansi Flick could now defend the domestic double for the first time since 2013 and 2014, when brought home two parts of ’ treble. A repeat of that treble is still possible for Bayern this year, with the Champions League title to be decided later in the summer.

Which run will Peter Bosz end?

Peter Bosz is the first Dutch coach in ten years to reach the final of the DFB-Pokal. Louis van Gaal lifted the trophy in 2010 as Bayern beat Werder Bremen 4-0. It would be the greatest success in the current Leverkusen boss’s coaching career. While Bosz won the Dutch second division with Heracles in 2005, he has had bad luck so far in finals. He lost both national cup finals in the Netherlands with Heracles (2012) and Israel with Maccabi Tel Aviv (2016), as well as coming up short with Ajax in the 2017 Europa League final against Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. The Dutchman’s teams have also failed to score a goal in those three finals.

Peter Bosz’s finals as a coach Year Club Competition Result 2017 AFC Ajax Europa League 2-0 loss vs. Manchester United 2016 Maccabi Tel Aviv Israeli Cup 1-0 loss vs. Maccabi Haifa 2012 Heracles Almelo Dutch Cup 3-0 loss vs. PSV Eindhoven

Bosz also had the chance to win the DFL-Supercup in his first game with Borussia Dortmund, but lost on penalties to Bayern on 5th August 2017.

However, there is hope for the 56-year-old, who won the Dutch Cup three times as a player with (1992, 1994, 1995). Every Dutch coach to reach the final of the DFB-Pokal has won it. Bosz would therefore become the fourth Dutch coach to lift the DFB-Pokal this millennium, which is twice as many as any other nationality (except German) in that period.

Flick knocked out Leverkusen in 2003

This is Hansi Flick’s fourth DFB-Pokal match as Bayern head coach. He oversaw eight games in charge of Hoffenheim from 2002 to 2005, knocking out teams from higher divisions on four occasions, which included a 3-2 win over Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002/03 round of 16. The other three clubs were Fürth, Trier and Karlsruhe of Bundesliga 2.

Flick won the DFB-Pokal as a player with Bayern in 1986 when they beat VfB Stuttgart 5-2 in the final, but he wasn’t in the squad that day and made just one appearance that campaign. The 55-year-old could, though, follow and Niko Kovac as the only people to win the DFB-Pokal as a player and coach for the same club. Flick would also become the first person since in 2011 to win the cup having taken over as coach during the season.

32. Appendix – Current League Situation

Leverkusen:

➢ With 35 points and a +15 goal difference, Leverkusen have had the second-best Rückrunde in club history – they only took more points in 1999/2000 (39).

➢ Leverkusen finished the season with 63 points, which is their best return in seven years (65 points in 2012/13).

➢ Bayer 04 took more points on the road (32) than they did at home this season (31). They have only ever picked up more away points in a Bundesliga campaign in 2010/11 (36).

➢ Leverkusen scored 38 times in the second half of the season, having only managed 23 goals before the winter break.

➢ Leverkusen suffered three defeats across the last seven matchdays, which is as many games as they lost in the 17 matches prior to this.

Bayern:

➢ FC Bayern ended the Bundesliga season with 13 consecutive wins – a new BL record at the end of a campaign. The previous record was 10 wins to conclude the season, set by Gladbach in 1986/87. Their 4-0 victory in Wolfsburg on matchday 34 was their 16th straight win in all competitions.

➢ Bayern enjoyed an unbeaten Bundesliga Rückrunde for only the third time (after 1986/87 and 2012/13). This has only been achieved twice by all the other clubs in BL history: Frankfurt in 1976/77 and Dortmund in 2011/12.

➢ Bayern recorded the best Rückrunde in their Bundesliga history after taking 49 of a possible 51 points and recording a +44 goal difference. They also had 49 points under Jupp Heynckes in 2012/13, but “only” a +43 goal difference.

➢ Bayern ended the season with 82 points, which is four more than they picked up last season (78) – it’s “only” their fifth-best Bundesliga return, although no other side has ever picked up more points in a BL campaign.

➢ Only one side had ever scored 100 goals in a Bundesliga season before: FC Bayern themselves in 1971/72 (101, league record).

Penalty Shootouts

➢ First penalty shootout: The first penalty shootout in DFB-Pokal history took place on 23 December 1970 after Bundesliga outfit Schalke and side VfL Wolfsburg had played out two draws (2-2 a.e.t. in Wolfsburg, 1-1 a.e.t. in Gelsenkirchen). Dieter Thun netted the first penalty for VfL at Schalke’s Glückauf-Kampfbahn. S04 goalkeeper saved two efforts and Schalke went through 3-1.

➢ Longest shootout: VfB Stuttgart and Regionalliga side SV Sandhausen in the first round on 27 August 1995. The first 12 attempts from both teams were all scored before Stuttgart’s Hendrik Herzog hit the post with his second go. The final result was 13-12.

➢ Shootouts without scoring: Eight teams have failed to score a single penalty in a shootout. The most recent was Union Berlin in the second round of 2016/17 at Dortmund (3-0).

➢ First shootout in a final: The 1984 final between Bayern and Gladbach was the first to be decided on penalties. Goals from and Wolfgang Dremmler meant it ended 1-1 after 120 minutes before Lothar Matthäus fired the first spot-kick high into the Frankfurt sky for Borussia.
