Kanaan Adds Third Podium Finish to 2015 Season Resume

FONTANA, Calif. (June 28, 2015) – NTT DATA Racing driver finished second at the MAVTV 500 at in Round 11 of the 2015 IndyCar Series season.

Kanaan and the No. 10 NTT DATA Chevrolet started the 500-mile race in the sixth position. Over the first 20 laps, Kanaan made his way up to second and a few laps later the No. 10 would finally take the lead. Over the next 15 laps, Kanaan battled for the lead with multiple cars, including teammate . NTT DATA called the No. 10 in for the first of the day on Lap 35 of 250 for fuel and tires and by Lap 55 Kanaan had fallen back to ninth. Kanaan pitted for the second time for fuel and tires on Lap 71 and on Lap 100 the No. 10 was running in the fourth position. Just one lap later, Kanaan was back in the lead until pitting for the third stop of the day on Lap 106.

The first yellow flag came on Lap 136 for a multi-car incident on the backstretch and Kanaan pitted under yellow on Lap 138 for fuel and tires. The field went green again on Lap 151 with Kanaan in fourth on the restart until the next yellow flag came out on Lap 158 for another multi-car incident. The field was green again on Lap 167 and Kanaan pitted again on Lap 189. Two laps later another yellow flag was thrown for debris until Lap 198 and once again another yellow flag was thrown for debris on Lap 221. The No. 10 pitted under yellow on Lap 222 and the field went green again on Lap 226. With nine laps to go, a multi-car incident pulled another yellow flag that eventually turned into a red flag. The field went green with five laps to go and Kanaan in third on the restart. On the restart, Kanaan made the pass into second and was in the process of passing for the lead when the final yellow flag of the race came out with two laps to go. The 500-mile race would end under a yellow flag with Kanaan and the No. 10 NTT DATA Chevrolet crossing the finish line in second.

With the results, Kanaan holds the eighth position in the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings with 285 markers, 122 points behind the points leader .

Notes of Interest  Kanaan has finished first and second in the last two races at Auto Club Speedway.  There were 80 lead changes during the MAVTV 500, which set an INDYCAR lead change record, and Kanaan led 23 of the 250 laps.  The red flag was displayed on Lap 245 of 250 on the 2-mile Auto Club Speedway oval after contact on Lap 242 between the No. 1 and the No. 14 on the front stretch.  The race ended under caution for a last-lap accident on the front stretch.

We battled up front all day and the No. 10 NTT DATA Chevrolet was really quick. I was actually in the middle of a pass when that last yellow came out, so who knows what could’ve happened if we would’ve stayed green until the end.”

Sage Karam Earns Career-Best Finish at Fontana

FONTANA, Calif. (June 28, 2015) - Chip Ganassi Racing Teams (CGRT) rookie driver Sage Karam finished a career-best fifth at the MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Round 11 of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season.

After starting 10th Karam had worked his way to up sixth by Lap 15 in the 250 lap race, breaking into the top three on Lap 21. On Lap 24 Karam would take the lead from teammate Tony Kanaan to lead his first lap in Verizon IndyCar Series competition. Karam would bring the No. 8 Chevrolet in for green-flag pit stops on Lap 37 for four tires and fuel, cycling out to the fourth position. Karam fell to 11th place on Lap 65 and would make his second green-flag pit stop of the day on Lap 75, pitting from the seventh position for tires and fuel. Karam fell as low as the 13th position before pitting from eighth on Lap 110 in the third round of green flag pit stops.

The first caution of the race came on Lap 136 and Karam brought the No. 8 in the next lap for fuel and tires, restarting in the ninth position on Lap 152. Karam had raced his way up to the seventh position before the second caution of the race flew seven laps after the restart on Lap 159. Karam pitted from the eighth position on Lap 191 for tires and fuel before the caution fell for debris on Lap 192. The No. 8 had climbed into the top five before a caution on Lap 220 for debris, pitting on Lap 222 for four tires and fuel. He was running in the seventh position when the caution fell on Lap 241. The race was red flagged on Lap 245 to help ensure the race would finish under green flag conditions. Cars began rolling with five laps remaining in the race and Karam elected to pit for tires with four laps to go, catching up to the field just as the green flag was being shown and battled to a fifth-place finish when the yellow flag was thrown one lap alter and the race finished under checkered and yellow flags.

With the results, Karam holds the 21st position in the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings with 126 markers, 281 points behind the points leader Juan Pablo Montoya.

Notes of Interest  The fifth-place result marked the best of Sage Karam’s INDYCAR career.  There were 80 lead changes during the MAVTV 500, which set an INDYCAR lead change record.  The red flag was displayed on Lap 245 of 250 on the 2-mile Auto Club Speedway oval after contact on Lap 242 between the No. 1 and the No. 14 on the front stretch.  The race ended under caution for a last-lap accident on the front stretch.

It’s a battle and you’re in survival mode. The team did awesome and we overcame some adversity and stuck with it. We took a chance to take tires at the end and it was a good call, as we picked up a few spots to finish fifth. I’m happy with the result and glad we got that result under our belt.”

Dixon Finishes Sixth at Fontana

FONTANA, Calif. (June 28, 2015) - Target Chip Ganassi Racing (TCGR) driver finished sixth at the MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Round 11 of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season.

After starting seventh Dixon remained inside the top 10 until he made the first green flag pit stop of the race on Lap 39 of 250, restarting in the 10th position. Dixon broke into the top five on Lap 45, advancing to second on Lap 51 before taking over the lead a lap later. Dixon pitted from the lead on Lap 76, but had trouble with the clutch coming off pit road and fell back in the field. Dixon battled back and pitted from the lead in the next round of green flag pit stops on Lap 113.

The first caution of the race came on Lap 136 and Dixon pitted one lap later for four tires and fuel, restarting in the sixth position on Lap 152. Dixon fell to 13th when the second caution came off seven laps later. The third caution of the night fell on Lap 192 for debris and Dixon pitted for four tires and fuel on Lap 194. Dixon climbed to fourth on Lap 200 but had fallen to the 10th position when the caution fell on Lap 220 for debris. Dixon brought the No. 9 down pit road for four tires and fuel on Lap 222, restarting in the 10th position. He battled his way to the fourth position by time the caution fell on Lap 241. The race was red flagged on Lap 245 to help ensure the race would finish under green flag conditions. The field took the green with three laps to go but Dixon finished sixth after the caution came out one lap after the restart and the race finished under checkered and yellow flags.

With the results, Dixon holds the third position in the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings with 358 markers, 49 points behind the points leader Juan Pablo Montoya.

Scott Dixon, No. 9 Degree/ Chevrolet: “That was kind of a mess of a race. Everything depended on what kind of run you got. We had some front-end damage so we had to keep putting wing into it. We kept losing time on every stop having to put wing into it. At the end we just had too much front understeer and couldn’t get the car drivable. I think the levels of downforce were too high and it needed to be spread out more. Could have been a different result for us in the Degree car if circumstances were different.”

Kimball Scores Fourth Top-10 Finish of Season in Fontana

FONTANA, Calif. (June 28, 2015) – Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing (NNCGR) driver finished eighth at the MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Round 11 of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season.

Kimball and the No. 83 Levemir® FlexTouch® Chevrolet started the 500-mile race in the seventh row. At green flag, Kimball dropped back to 17th as the middle of the field crowded with traffic and by Lap 10 of 250 the No. 83 had dropped back two more spots to 19th. By Lap 29, Kimball had made his way back to 14th and on Lap 35 the No. 83 came in for the first scheduled pit stop of the day for fuel and tires. Kimball reentered the field in 16th and by Lap 60 was running in 15th. NNNCGR called the No. 83 in for another pit stop on Lap 75 for fuel and tires and by Lap 100 was running in 15th. Kimball came in again for fresh tires and fuel and on Lap 109 and reentered the field in 16th. Over the next 20 laps, Kimball made his way back to his starting spot of 13th.

The first yellow flag came on Lap 136 for a multi-car incident on the backstretch and Kimball pitted under yellow on Lap 138 for fuel and tires. The field went green again on Lap 151 with Kimball in 10th on the restart until the next yellow flag came out on Lap 158 for another multi-car incident. The No. 83 came in on Lap 160 to top off on fuel from 14th and the field was green again on Lap 167. The yellow flag came out again on Lap 191 and Kimball would pit under yellow from seventh for fuel and tires on Lap 194. The field went green again on Lap 199 with the No. 83 in eighth on the restart until another yellow flag was thrown for debris on Lap 221. The No. 83 pitted under yellow on Lap 222 and the field was green on Lap 226. With nine laps to go, a multi-car incident triggered another yellow flag that eventually turned into a red flag. The field went green with five laps to go and Kimball in seventh on the restart. On the restart, Kimball dropped back one spot to eighth and the final yellow flag of the race came out with two laps to go. The 500-mile race would end under a yellow flag with Kimball and the No. 83 Levemir® FlexTouch® Chevrolet crossing the finish line in eighth.

With the result, Kimball holds the 11th position in the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings with 248 markers, 159 points behind the points leader Juan Pablo Montoya.

Charlie Kimball, No. 83 Levemir® FlexTouch® Chevrolet: “Overall a good day for Chip Ganassi Racing having all four cars in the top eight. I think the Levemir FlexTouch Chevy ran pretty well. We just never quite got inside the top five where there was cleaner air. We need to go back and look at the data from our teammates and see where we go from here. I don’t know that we’ll see this type of track until we come back here next year, but I’m looking forward to heading to the oval challenges at Milwaukee, Iowa and Pocono.”
