MEETING BRIEF LILLE METROPOLE 2020, WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL

Lille Metropole is the World Design Capital® for 2020 (WDC 2020).

“DESIGN IS CAPITAL” A strong declaration, a solid conviction that expresses the direction of this event. Behind this title lies an in-depth transformation project and a pioneering approach to design.

At each change or important moment of its history, our Metropole has been able to reinvent its economy, reconsider its geographical location at the centre of Europe and rise to the challenges of its time by taking a firmly forward-looking approach.

Today, WDC 2020 presents a programme underpinned by a pioneering approach to design, driven by the desire to transform and repurpose its heritage by calling on the people who live it and build it each day.

Design is a process of empathy and action. It engages us in an experience that is practical and community spirited. World Design Capital 2020 projects are paving the way for a more creative, more resource-efficient, more responsible and more collaborative Metropole.

For this World Design Capital 2020 Signature Event, we have directed our efforts to creating a new working model. We have transformed the Eurometropolis into the biggest collective design agency in the world, embracing a region of 2.2 million residents.

At the heart of this initiative are the POCs (Proof of Concept), bringing over 600 innovative ideas to the table through collaborative design, encouraged, identified and developed in our Metropole, a process that guarantees results. These are complemented by a full programme of exhibitions, events, workshops and conferences.

We are look forward to showing you how our region is the ideal place for changing the world through design, by enabling designers, citizens, business leaders, researchers and artists from around the world to join us in imagining and building solutions to the challenges of our day and age.

In light of the Covid-19 crisis and the rescheduling of in- person events, the WDC 2020 programme was suspended until June. The period from September - November 2020 will be the busiest part of this modified programme, including multiple signature events.

The WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING is a forum for municipal representatives, including but not limited to the mayors of World Design Capital cities. Initiated by the World Design Organization (WDO), this signature event offers this unique group of cities an opportunity to maintain an active dialogue on design in the life of a city.

The meeting also highlights the successes of the previous WDCs, identifying opportunities for collaboration between them and other design-driven cities.

4 2020 EDITION CONTEXT

The WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING, a key moment for the cities and their representatives during the World Design Capital, allows the WDC Host City to welcome former and future World Design Capital cities to share the World Design Capital experience.

Determined to proceed with the meeting in spite of the international health crisis, we propose holding the 2020 edition of the WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING in a 100% online format, as a video conference and through digital communication.

The WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING 2020 will therefore take place in October at the same time as the design week, focusing on the main signature events and key moments of Lille Metropole 2020, World Design Capital.

THURSDAY 13 OCTOBER 2020, 2.00 PM (UTC) ORGANISED BY THE LILLE METROPOLE AS A VIDEO CONFERENCE

OBJECTIVES

The 2020 edition of the WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING will address the question: “How to collaborate and use design as a tool for motivating citizens, helping to build new economic models and drawing up effective public policies.”

Using this question as a springboard, this will be an opportunity for former and future World Design Capitals to share and exchange ideas in three key areas:

8 FOCUS 1: World Design Capital heritage, promote sustainable development of regions and improve citizens’ quality of life by design;

8 FOCUS 2: dealing with the Covid-19 crisis through an approach strengthened by design and innovation;

8 FOCUS 3: evaluation and reaffirmation of the role of design as an essential tool for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

We suggest these three themes during the dialogue planned for the WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING, but also through communications (website, social media) and signature of a joint declaration.

It is planned that this declaration be sent to the General Secretariat and to the European Union, to reaffirm collectively the commitment by our cities and metropoles to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, in the context of an unprecedented crisis, based on the heritage of our respective experiences as World Design Capitals.
