WDC NETWORK of CITIES MEETING 2020 EDITION WDC NETWORK of CITIES MEETING / About World Design Capital WDC NETWORK of CITIES MEET LAST UPDATE: 1/4 OCTOBER 9, 7:05:09 PM WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING 2020 EDITION The World Design Network of Cities Meeting is a forum that brings together municipal representatives of past WDC designated cities. Facilitated by WDO, this event aims to highlight the successes in WDC legacy programmes, and provide an opportunity for WDC designated cities to convene and activate networks for collaborative action. As cities grapple with the challenges of rapid urbanization, economic disparity, the push for sustainable reform and recently a global pandemic and economic crisis, the Network of Cities Meeting offers an international platform for Mayors and key urban development policymakers to connect and exchange insights about the role of design-led solutions in building sustainable, equitable and prosperous cities. WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING / About World Design Capital World Design Capital® (WDC), designated every two years by the World Design Organization™ (WDO), recognizes cities for their effective use of design to drive economic, social, cultural, and environmental development. Through a year-long programme of events, the designated city showcases best practices in sustainable design-led urban policy and innovation that improve quality of life. WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING / About World Design Organization World Design Organization (WDO)® is an international non-governmental organization that promotes the profession of industrial design and its ability to generate better products and systems, better business and industry, and ultimately a better environment and society. As the international voice for industrial design, WDO advocates, promotes, and shares knowledge of industrial design-driven innovation that has the power to create a better world. International programmes, which includes World Design Capital®, are designed to enable collaborations between the global industrial design community, to identify challenges and opportunities, and to address some of the world's most significant challenges, from a design point of view. WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING / About NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING 2020 Edition The 2020 edition of the WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING will address the question: “How to collaborate and use design as a tool for motivating citizens, helping to build new economic models and drawing up effective public policies.” Using this question as a springboard, this will be an opportunity for former and future World Design Capitals to share and exchange ideas in three key areas: 8 FOCUS 1: World Design Capital heritage, to promote sustainable development of regions and improve citizens’ quality of life; 8 FOCUS 2: dealing with the Covid-19 crisis by following a design and innovation approach; 8 FOCUS 3: evaluation and reaffirmation of the role of design as an essential tool for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. We initially proposed that the World Design Capitals “sign” a joint declaration at the end of the WDC NETWORK OF CITIES MEETING. This declaration draft, we shared, focus on strengthening our communities in all areas through design and innovation and conclude with the World Design Capitals commitment to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). FROM TRADITION TO MODERNITY. A JOURNEY THROUGH DESIGN. EXCELLENT TRACK RECORD INTRODUCTION 100 years of history. 100 years of design. POINT is the result of a dream someone had back in the 1920s. It was the dream of José Pons Pedro, a master craftsman who made design his hallmark. Thanks to his vision he converted a small wicker workshop in Gata de Gorgos, Alicante, into one of the Valencia Region’s leading manufacturers, which came to have more than 300 employees in the 1960s. 100 years and four generations of the family later, POINT has remained faithful to its essence and has gained national and international renown for its designer outdoor furniture. Design and innovation are central to its business strategy and growth, together with craftsmanship, sustainability, family, people and talent. POINT creates pieces in collaboration with prestigious designers, through which the company helps improve society and people’s quality of life in addition to presen- ting Spanish design to the world. But POINT is much more than design, craftsmanship and innovation. It is an ethical company that, through its products, promotes responsible design all over the world. 2 3 EXCELLENT TRACK RECORD HISTORY Over its hundred years of history and four generations of the Pons family, POINT has evolved from a small workshop founded in 1920 in Gata de Gorgos to an international design firm that is present in more than 70 countries, with 42 collections and 300 products that have been used to decorate more than 1000 interior design projects around the world. 1920s Indo-Chinese countries banned the export of José Pons Pedro, the grandfather of the present this raw material, meaning that the company owners, founded the company in Gata de Gor- had to reinvent its production process.

Behind this title lies an in-depth transformation project and a pioneering approach to design. At each change or important moment of its history, our Metropole has been able to reinvent its economy, reconsider its geographical location at the centre of Europe and rise to the challenges of its time by taking a firmly forward-looking approach. Today, WDC 2020 presents a programme underpinned by a pioneering approach to design, driven by the desire to transform and repurpose its heritage by calling on the people who live it and build it each day.
