"YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN" SCREENPLAY by GENE WILDER FIRST DRAFT FADE IN: EXT. FRANKENSTEIN CASTLE A BOLT OF LIGHTNING! A CRACK OF THUNDER! On a distant, rainy hill, the old Frankenstein castle, as we knew and loved it, is illuminated by ANOTHER BOLT OF LIGHTNING. MUSIC: AN EERIE TRANSYLVANIAN LULLABY begins to PLAY in the b.g. as we MOVE SLOWLY CLOSER to the castle. It is completely dark, except for one room -- a study in the corner of the castle -- which is only lit by candles. Now we are just outside a rain-splattered window of the study. We LOOK IN and SEE: INT. STUDY - NIGHT An open coffin rests on a table we can not see it's contents. As the CAMERA SLOWLY CIRCLES the coffin for a BETTER VIEW... A CLOCK BEGINS TO CHIME: "ONE," "TWO," "THREE," "FOUR..." We are ALMOST FACING the front of the coffin. "FIVE," "SIX," "SEVEN," "EIGHT..." The CAMERA STOPS. Now it MOVES UP AND ABOVE the satin-lined coffin. "NINE," "TEN," "ELEVEN," "T W E L V E!" CUT TO: THE EMBALMED HEAD OF BEAUFORT FRANKENSTEIN Half of still clings to the waxen balm; the other half has decayed to skull. Below his head is a skeleton, whose bony fingers cling to a metal box. A HAND reaches in to grasp the metal box. It lifts the box halfway out of the coffin -- the skeleton's fingers rising, involuntarily, with the box. Then, as of by force of will, the skeleton's fingers grab the box back and place it where it was. Now the "Hand" -- using its other hand -- grabs the box back from the skeleton's fingers. -

Shelley started writing the story when she was 18, and the first edition was published anonymously in London on 1 January 1818, when she was 20.[2] Her name first appeared in the second edition published in Paris in 1821. Shelley travelled through Europe in 1815 along the river Rhine in Germany stopping in Gernsheim, 17 kilometres (11 mi) away from Frankenstein Castle, where two centuries before, an alchemist engaged in experiments.[3][4][5] She then journeyed to the region of Geneva, Switzerland, where much of the story takes place. The topic of galvanism and occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her lover and future husband Percy B. Shelley. Mary, Percy and Lord Byron had a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for days, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made, inspiring the novel.[6] Though Frankenstein is infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement, Brian Aldiss has argued that it should be considered the first true science fiction story. -

This state is characterized by a definite break in the consistency of vital processes (nutrition, respiration …) necessary for homeostatic maintenance of the organism, that distinguishes the death of a temporary alteration as in the case of hibernation or some freezing. At the cellular level, death means the cessation of the basic functions of a cell. In multicellular communities, this may be accidental death (necrosis) or controlled or programmed death (apoptosis). However, there are sometimes disorder that challenge this common death: the cell is then said to be immortal because it can be split into daughter cells an unlimited number of times. Unicellular organisms that reproduce by fission are only immortal principle, although after marking it appears that these cells are also aging, which alters their homeostatic and reproductive capacities. In multicellular organisms, sexual cells, called germ, are potentially immortal, unlike their somatic cell envelope eventually die hopelessly under the influence of external pathogenic factors, or because of the phenomenon of aging. Somatic envelope then form what is called a corpse, which then decomposes under the action of oxidation, bacteria and various scavengers and organizations contributing to the recycling of organic and inorganic material. -

DAY 3 NEWSTEAD ABBEY Newstead Abbey is a beautiful historic house with gardens and parkland covering more than 300 acres ( 120 hectares ) a few miles away from Nottingham . Visiting Newstead Abbey , you wander around different kinds of gardens , pass past lakes , ponds and waterfalls … Inside the Abbey, you can visit Victorian rooms and Lord Byron private apartments. History The priory of St. Mary of Newstead was founded by King Henry II of England about the year 1170 as penances following the murder of Thomas Becket . Contrary to its current name, Newstead was never an abbey: it was a priory. Sir John Byron of Colwick was granted Newstead Abbey by Henry VIII in1540 after the dissolution of the monasteries and started its conversion into a country house In may 1798, Lord Byron was a young boy of ten when he inherited the estate .The house was in a great state of disrepair ( his great-uncle from whom he inherited had a lot of debts ) but the gothic ruins with the coat of arms of the Byron family were fascinating the young boy. Newstead was his home between 1808 - 1814. Byron had a great love of animals most notably for a Newfoundland dog named Boatswain, who died of rabies in 1808. Byron commissioned an impressive marble funerary monument for Boatswain at Newstead Abbey and the 26 lines poem « Epitaph to a Dog » has become one of his best-known works. The Tambora – Frankenstein Myth: The Monster Inspired Alan Marshall, Kanang Kantamurapoj, Nanthawan Kaenkaew, Mark Felix Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Mahidol University 999 Phuttamonthon 4, Nakhonpathum 73710, Thailand Email: [email protected] Abstract: The link between the volcanic eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815 and Mary Shelley’s composition of Frankenstein has attained mythic status. The myth uses a scientific frame to promote the idea that the Tambora event led to Mary Shelley’s invention of the Frankenstein story because the eruption so altered the climate of Europe (lowering the temperatures, creating rainy electrical storms, producing frosts and floods, and generally darkening the landscape) that Shelley dreamt up the idea for her monstrous horror tale as a result. She was then imprisoned indoors by the volcanically-induced bad summer weather of 1816 and thus encouraged to craft the story into a full length gothic novel. This paper outlines the structure of this Tambora – Frankenstein myth and then attempts to investigate its roles, goals, and meanings as ascribed by various (mostly ‘pop science’ scholars) and journalists. An attempt is then made to elucidate the problems, failings, and miscalculations of the Myth. Keywords: Frankenstein volcano; scientific myth; science fiction; gothic literature. Introduction In April 1815, on the island of Sumbawa in the East Indies, the 14,000 foot Tambora volcano underwent a massive eruption. Geologists now believe it was the biggest eruptive event in recorded history, thousands of times stronger than the eruptions of Mt St Helens (1980) or Vesuvius (79AD) and some ten to twenty times stronger than the famous Krakatoa eruption of 1883.1 The Tambora eruption was so loud that many hundreds of miles away the British Governor of Java, Stamford Raffles, thought that an enemy fleet might have started a cannon battle somewhere off the coast.2 The eruption spewed up to 175 cubic kilometers of hot dusty ashy material into the sky to a height of some 40 kilometers.
